One piece of garbage willing to hide another.

Ron DeSantis offered to ‘hide’ Libs of TikTok founder despite California residency

Right-wing activist Chaya Raichik said that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) offered to “hide” her after she was exposed as the person behind the @libsoftiktok Twitter account.

In an interview that aired on Tuesday, Raichik told Fox News host Tucker Carlson that a DeSantis staffer offered her help despite her California residency.

“When I was doxxed, someone from Ron DeSantis’ team called me and she said, ‘The governor wanted me to give you a message,’” she recalled. “He said if you don’t feel safe — you or your family — if you need a place to go, to hide, to stay, you can come to the governor’s mansion.”

So, MrBWS got a Bank of America business credit card in the mail today.
He did not request this card.
More weirdness: the business name and street address are associated with a city in Colorado, but also includes MrBWS’s name and our town/state/zipcode on the other side of the country.
I tried calling Bank of America but their automated system refuses to allow me to talk to a human being.

Guess I’ll just cut up the card and mail the whole shebang back to BoA.

It’s the other card that went to the business address that’s going to cause him trouble if it exists. I’d sent them a letter using registered mail.

what other card? MrBWS did not request a card.
Some google exploration shows that someone associated with the dental company has the same name as MrBWS. Still doesn’t explain how it ended up here.

It sounded like identity theft with a card going to the wrong address, alerting the victim.

I don’t know how a legitimate card for someone with the same name would go to the address of someone else with that name.

Not the same thing BUT a few months ago I received an insurance policy that was sent to another name, my street address, and a city in Texas (not Illinois) with my zip code. I investigated and discovered there was a street with the same address as mine in that Texas city; it was the zip code that overrode the city/state for the post office. So I contacted the insurance agency and told them of the error — somehow the agency had entered the wrong information for zip code. My guess is that some similar error occurred in your situation — that a clerk working for the bank or some poorly written software looked up the applicant’s name (maybe on the Internet) and found the wrong person.

If you believe that it is identity theft, you may wish, as first steps -

- to contact your local police to get a case#. (It is unlikely that they will actually be able to do anything beyond that.)
- Then notify the bank.
- Also contact the three major credit bureaus and let them know.
- You can also lock you credit accounts so no one can make a credit card query in order to issue a credit card.
- And contact the Ky State Attorney General’s office.

We’ve been getting decent rains here in the bay area since yesterday afternoon. After these years of drought and not getting any rain in the winter, I must say I find it pleasant and would like to see much more. What’s even more encouraging are the snow reports coming from the mountains from Tahoe to the southern Sierra which all have winter storm warnings posted. They appear to be getting ready for a major snow dump like we used to get.

Palmer Report may be a tad ticked off about the failings of the media re the George Santos campaign, but their fundamental point is quite valid. IIRC, the story was that the Dem campaign DID raise questions about Santos’ CV/resume/qualifications/finances, but that - outside of one local outlet with limited resources - most of the NY media didn’t bother to fact-check Santos’ claims: on the dubious grounds that it was a *political campaign*, and so any (most? all?) claims/charges/accusations were to be discounted/ignored going in. I’m reasonably sure they wouldn’t be as dismissive of a Democratic candidate with as fictional a “record” as George Santos (and will probably nutpick and troll some Democrat over some minor factual failing next time, just to show their “evenhandedness”), but there we are…

All of which, IMO, doesn’t excuse the NYS Democratic Party for their relatively poor efforts in the 2022 midterms.

But what if he were actually just that dumb?

Musk is a troll at heart, a sad little man who only feels good if he’s pushing around other people, which he mostly achieves through deception rather than through aggression. His entire life is built on disingenuousness and artifice, alternately faking sincerity and hiding behind irony. Parsing is a skill, and not a skill that Musk values or attempts to engage in. If we tease apart his own conception of “free speech absolutist” what we find is mostly a rejection that words mean anything or that words, in context, can cause harm or signify that harm is coming…but also that this is normal and necessary because better kinds of people cannot be held accountable.

Indeed, as a bullshitter who imagines themselves a superior kind of person—like many other bullshitters in recent history we’ve had to deal with—it is absolutely necessary to his worldview for words to have no meaning, and for everyone else to use words just as cynically.

That he would “read” Medvedev as insincere, or engaged in an intentional hyperbole, is entirely in keeping with Musk’s own treatment of language at all times.

Keep the card for now and keep calling BoA. My ID nearly got hijacked in similar fashion about six or so years ago. Someone opened up a Bank of Omaha card in my name, and the only thing that saved my ass was the phone number was wrong. This triggered the bank to look up my real number and ask “WTF?”

Literally everything else was correct, including the SSN, except for the phone number. If it wasn’t for that, I’d probably still be digging out from under all sorts of financial pain.

I wound up putting a credit lock with all three credit agencies and on their advice, filed a police report with my local force. Haven’t had an issue since, but do not put off dealing with this.

FRANKFORT, IL — The former owner of a Frankfort pizzeria who pleaded guilty to six counts of criminal activity in connection with secretly taking upskirt videos of his employees has been sentenced to probation, according to court records.

Michael Papandrea, 60, was indicted in 2020 on 17 felony charges in connection to the unauthorized videotaping, which involved 1,900 videos that were shot using a shoe camera and another 14 videos that were shot using a camera posted above a toilet in one of Papandrea’s restaurants.

Stocks absolutely hold value, which is why people buy them. There’s a misconception that they hold value only as speculation, but that’s only partially correct. They are shares of a company and when that company makes a profit, you get a dividend correlating with the number of shares you own. If the company makes profits every year, then those stocks are worth money because of that value. In the case of Tesla, it’s artificially high because of the assumption that one day Tesla will make money every year, which has not been true so far. If there is any doubt creeping in that Tesla’s future profitability is a mirage, then people will sell off and invest in a company that is actually profitable.

The accusation that everybody’s owned by Russia because they fawn over authoritarianism should be tested with the same skepticism as conservative conspiracy theories.

The more simple explanation, and the one borne out by history, is that people with a lot of capital will side with the kind of people that will grant them more power, and more kinds of power. Power justifies itself, and for centuries it has been part of the capital values that there is a moral quality to holding power. The natural endpoint of this assumption is that expressions of power that are taboo in humanist/democratic societies are expressions of strength and virtue.

Furthermore, the conspiracy misses the point that Russia is not an exceptional actor on the world stage, a unique font of venality. What skullduggery they definitively do is…normal…in the world of capitalist influence on worldwide governance. In fact, they’re just acting like any other petrochemical corporation, except that they do their own killing rather than sub the work out to Pakistani mercenaries or the US government.

They’re sinister because they’re capitalists, not because of old Cold War lore about the KGB being hypercompetent (they were not) or dictator mystique (most dictators are mediocrities exceptional only in the absence of care). They have been successfully sinister because what they do is within the tolerances of the global capitalist system, right up until the moment they fucked with Ukraine and Ukraine giant undeveloped gas field.

If Russia is uniquely bad…well, it’s been under the same system for close to thirty years.

Same people, same way of doing shit. 30 years.

AND YET the entire “democratic world” has been happy to business with that system because it means cheap resources and free-flowing investment capital. There are oligarchs because people bought oligarch oil because the alternative was…anything that required new infrastructure or new skilled labor niches.

Kind of like the “capitalist world” being perfectly fine with the PRC and Vietnam, as long as that communist central government is using it’s clout to keep wages down, worker rights curtailed, environment protections eliminated.

“Stupid” is much less meaningful than people assume it to be.

Most Trump supporters I know are wealthy people who look at Trump and see something aspirational: because he has money, what he does must be good, right in the sense of “correct” and “moral.” But more deeply than that, most of what liberals find “stupid” they view as succinct-ness: there’s no reason to think about these things, parse them, because the answer is very simple.

Incuriosity is a virtue because it shows determination. Ignorance is a display of dominance: they will not be controlled by information or complexity.

And if that sounds awful…yes, it is, but it’s not uniquely conservative. Incuriosity is the border of culture: it is expected that you will at some point accept the socially-accepted narrative of what is. Incuriosity keeps the citizens of empire from seeing the subjects of empire.

re: #84 Charles Johnson

There’s always a guy like this.

He’s not entirely wrong. Stocks themselves are merely representative of the perceived market value of the company. If you have shares of Tesla you paid $300 each for, you may find someone to give you 109 dollars per share today. If nobody wants to buy at that price, you may have to accept less tomorrow.

I’ve got 200 chares of a bio firm I bought at $2 a share as they were working on a Covid cure…didn’t happen. Now they’re worth $0.26 a share. I may buy some more if they come up with a new drug. They do have an immuno-drug that works for HIV.

Investigators with the Santa Cruz Police Department say 19-year-old Damien Vela was arrested last week for creating fake parking tickets and placing them on vehicles parked at or near local beaches. The tickets do have some similar characteristics that could make them appear authentic to the average driver. They even came with QR codes that when scanned, would lead the victim to a website that the teen created where they could pay their “fine.”

Just posted this on FB. I know somebody is gonna yell at me for it.

JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS, STRAIGHT FROM MY MOUTH … Yes, they did issue a warrant for my arrest.. so now I’m waiting for them to come by. No point in running and making things worse. No point in dragging this out. My people know what’s up, and the people I told know what went down. I messed up and did some things I shouldn’t have… Now I realize that I have to face the consequences of my actions.
I know my family and friends won’t get here before they do but if you would stick by me through this…no matter what I did, it would be appreciated. I would message everyone individually but I thought it would be easier just to post this here for all of you. I’m going to miss every single one of you I knew who treated me like family. I love you all so much.
I promise to get better and do better, especially because this isn’t real and you should post it as your status and see how many people actually read stuff until the end before they fall for it too.

re: #129 JC1

Some billionaires are aware of the sycophant trap you describe in point 3 and build systems to counteract it. Ray Dalio is probably the most obvious example, but not the only one. There are billionaires who try to be as data driven as possible in their decision making.

I’m not talking about how they do their business planning.

I’m talking about how they construct their entire framework of what is valuable, and what power means, in a vacuum disconnected from other people.

The most dangerous rich people are the ones that have a practical grasp on money management but have also accepted the premise that they are entitled to the bodies of others on a fundamental level. Elon Musk is…embarrassing and gross and very visible…but the real damage being done is by competent-at-retaining-money rich people who ultimately reject humanism because equality of dignity is bad for the bottom line.

Like, Twitter stuff is…not great…but historically the pattern is rich people creating enormous body counts because they can’t conceive they’re not the smartest guys in the room and entitled, nay, destined, to whatever they want. And they do so with data—if you can degrade life this much, your net worth will go up.

Musk and his Silicon Valley brethren are noticeable precisely because they’re incredibly open in the conceit of their own brilliance—absolutely willing to issue their dogshit takes in public—but it’s the grey men who like watching the number go up who arrange banana wars, set up Operation Ajax, or give power to that quaint little weirdo Adolf Hitler.

what other card? MrBWS did not request a card.
Some google exploration shows that someone associated with the dental company has the same name as MrBWS. Still doesn’t explain how it ended up here.

BOA’s credit reporting agency has conflated the two same names and combined the two different addresses into a credit header associated with that name.

It happens a lot.

It’s a pain, but you need to document to BOA, that your guy isn’t the other guy, and your guy ain’t responsible for any charges against the “unsolicited charge card received” in the mail.

You can also contact Experian, TransUnion and Equifax and see if BOA has made any credit inquiries regarding your account, and if so put a statement disavowing any responsibility for charges on the BOA card, and the agency should contact you of *any* future inquiries are made.

re: #69 The Ghost of a Flea

……

Certainly, as portrayed in Glass Onion, Musk is definitely not that bright but excels at manipulating others and being single-minded in achieving his goals. His managing to gain so much wealth shows a cleverness at marketing and deception but the current drop in Tesla value suggests that cleverness may be wearing thin. It was he skill at promotion that drove the stock price so high, much higher than warranted by the actual product. The current level of 109, which is 3x the price in January 2020, when the stock began its spectacular run up, may be close to the right price or maybe it will fall an additional 10-15%. It was Musk’s personality that drove up the price — and now it’s returning to earth as he is exposed with all his flaws, especially with his deliberate alienation of much of his pro-green base.

Also, while “populism” and “elitism” are in theory polar qualities, the aesthetics of populism and even the behavior of “the masses” can be, and have been, captured by elites.

And in the case of Hitler…well, his populist message was elitist twice over.

First, in that it had no revolutionary intent—actual powerful people weren’t going to be disempowered, just “the wrong kind of people.” Second, the promise of his “populist” message was exclusionary, functioned entirely on there not being a unified “people” horizontally below an elite, but a vertical sectioning of an “us” from a “them.”

Ie write up a memorandum for the record, including when and who you talked to, what was said and what action items were agreed upon.
