re: #201 Belafon

The question is do Democrats stand back and leave the Republicans alone, or do they try to get a “moderate” Republican in place with concessions?

you don’t touch it
For at least two reasons

It’s not the D’s job to ‘help’ the Rs. They want to be in charge, they’re in charge. If they can’t even elect a leader from one of their own…

Second, as there are really no acceptable moderate Rs, even if one made a deal with D’s, it’ll still be an R agenda with Rs in charge. They won’t concede or give away any useful power etc.

Most important: D votes for a R for speaker will be skewered next election. Guaranteed.

Not runoff, but the conversation reminded me of the Kishon River issue.
But yes, runoff, no matter where, can be filled with all sort of dangerous pollutants.

The Defense Ministry will recognize all Israeli Navy veterans who were forced to swim in the heavily polluted Kishon River in northern Israel during their service and have since contracted a disease as IDF disabled veterans, giving them access to additional benefits and services, after years of refusing to do so.

*snip*

The Kishon River in northern Israel was used as a dumping ground for years for hazardous waste by petrochemical companies operating out of the port city of Haifa, turning the stream into one of the most polluted bodies of water in the country. The river was found to contain high levels of particularly toxic chemicals, like mercury and arsenic, killing off many of the fish and other wildlife that previously lived in it. It was also known to occasionally catch fire.

Despite this, however, the river was used as a training area for the Israeli Navy’s elite Shayetet 13 and its scuba unit until the early 1990s, with soldiers swimming and diving in it regularly. In total, more than 10,000 soldiers were exposed to the river’s polluted waters over the years, the military found in 2000.
*snip*

Time of Israel - Defense Ministry to recognize soldiers who swam in toxic river as disabled veterans

Eichenwald’s point is that a lot of financial institutions take end of year actions for institutional reasons that may, or may not, reflect their assessment of a stock. But if the selling persists into the New Year… It’s the stock, not the financial institution.

Exactly. Russia wants to be a big player on the world stage politically and show “The West” who’s boss, but it is less than a 2% player in GDP globally. It is smaller economically than South Korea or Texas. If “The West” drops 4% of its GDP in the next year (it won’t, but just sayin’) into Ukranian aid in the next year, it would exceed the GDP of the entire Russian Confederation, bankrupting it and ending the war.

Belafon  Dec 27, 2022 • 8:30:30pm

I am hopefully going to be working on a test tool later this year for my work, with its own scripting language. I also want to write some code to help with other tasks we do. To do some of this, I want to write some code that allows you to define an almost-context free grammar, with a couple of small additions for usability, and create a parser at runtime. So I needed to define the context free grammar for reading context free grammars:

GRAMMAR = RULE* ;
RULE = NAME ( ‘=’ | ‘:=’ ) EXPR ‘;’ ;
EXPR = TERM ( ‘|’ TERM )* ;
TERM = ( ITEM OPERAND? )+ ;
ITEM = ‘(’ EXPR ‘)’ | TAGGED | NAME ;
OPERAND = ‘?’ | ‘*’ | ‘+’;
TAGGED = ( PVALUE | VALUE ) ( ‘^’ NAME )? ;
PVALUE = ‘P’ VALUE ; # Java regex input. No space between P and ’ or “.
VALUE = ( ‘'’ STEXT ‘'’ | ‘”’ DTEXT ‘”’ ) ;
STEXT = P”([^’\]|\’|\\)+” ;
DTEXT = P’([^”\]|\”|\\)+’ ;
NAME = P’[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z_0-9]*’ ;

Since the code I am writing is there to perform lexical parsing on a context free grammar, I am passing in this grammar as input into the code for testing, but I could actually use the generated classes for my parser.

It’s almost Inception level recursion.

Americans’ views on 35 religious groups, organizations, and belief systems (YouGov)

On YouGov’s Views on Religion survey this year, good news! Atheists didn’t score dead last for the first time. After much hard work, Scientologists beat us out.

There is a wide gap between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats viewed us favourably by a small margin.

Over all religious faiths tested (atheism not being a religion but treated as such by the poll), all religion went down another three point in favourablility.

Except he did, as did the state party, they tried to get the media to pick up on it, and other than one local newspaper, New York’s media outlets did not. They were too invested in the gubernatorial race to pay any attention to the House race.

It’s the same argument about “why don’t the Democrats have more people on Sunday political shows? What’s wrong with the Democrats in charge?” You can’t get on those shows if the media outlets don’t invite you.

Every national news media outlet is owned by billionaires who benefit from GOP rule. Start there.

Had a really irritating FB exchange today with an anti-vaxxer RW friend of mind. But he says he’s not anti-vaxx because the mRNA vaccines are not vaccines. He calls them “treatments” or “preparations” but won’t use the term vaccine.

You see, in the past, the term vaccine was defined as “a preparation of killed microorganisms, living attenuated organisms or living fully virulent organisms that is administered to produce or artificially increase immunity to a particular disease” and the evil scientists behind their development deliberately revised the term, not because the technology changed, but because they wanted to misappropriate a common term to deceive citizens that these untested, dangerous chemicals were beneficial. As for COVID vaccines that are more traditional in nature — well they haven’t been tested for years to determine safety and efficacy.

But the good news is that when he and his wife did get COVID this year after they had been taking HCQ as a preventative on a regular basis, they then used Ivermectin (plus some actual standard medicine) and after 2 months , they fully recovered without requiring hospitalization.

I’m glad that they survived their encounter, as did 95% of those in their age range. But unfortunately, they learned nothing from their experience.

JB, the biggest issue is that Dems rarely get unfettered access to the soapbox nor are they allowed to determine what the issues are… in the run up to the election…. all during the summer…. gas prices, inflation!!!!!!!! drum beat ad infinitum… and then the economy righted itself, the Fed measure put the breaks on things and all of a sudden that GOP narrative was shot to shit….

so we turn the corner into Fall… what happened…. CRIME and IMMIGRATION because the banner items and naturally how Dem policies were to blame… nevermind that it was all bullshit, the new narrative was set, anything to help make that red tsunami a thing…

in NY it played even better because the Dem Mayor of NY (being a former police officer) played along because it was in his wheelhouse, so the local media pounded the crap out of it and whaddaya know, now we have a bunch of marginal NY GOP congresscritters.

You know how it is… cripes, HRC’s “e-mails”, there was nothing there, it was reported that there was nothing there, anyone who looked at it pragmatically could see there was nothing there…. Didn’t matter a tinkers damn to the NYT, they had their narrative and goddammit they were gonna sell it.

Same thing here… are the Dems blameless, no… but they couldn’t even get a cursory review of the guy and lets be honest, ad buys in the NY market cost money and its apparent that Santos has a dark money river at his disposal.

I will admit that the DMC has to do a better job of finding ways to reach people, because the MSM is slanted against them.

NASA, SpaceX to Study Hubble Telescope Reboost Possibility (NASA, December 22, 2022)

Updated Dec. 22, 2022: The non-exclusive SpaceX study regarding the possibilities of reboosting the Hubble Space Telescope is ongoing. On Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, NASA issued a Request for Information to seek additional information about commercial capabilities available to reboost a satellite in orbit, using Hubble as a demonstration, at no cost to the government. There are no plans at this time for NASA to conduct or fund a dedicated Hubble servicing mission. The Request for Information will remain open until Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023, as NASA continues exploring options for Hubble’s future.

NASA and SpaceX signed an unfunded Space Act Agreement Thursday, Sept. 22, to study the feasibility of a SpaceX and Polaris Program idea to boost the agency’s Hubble Space Telescope into a higher orbit with the Dragon spacecraft, at no cost to the government.

There are no plans for NASA to conduct or fund a servicing mission or compete this opportunity; the study is designed to help the agency understand the commercial possibilities.

Let’s be realistic, if the “Red Wave” had happened as the media was betting big on, then George Santos would have been a footnote, the party ready and willing to yeet him into the Sun without hesitation and gamble on a special election. But instead the party’s majority could fit comfortably into most overhead compartments and the guy who aspires to be Speaker is desperate not to lose any more seats in the vain hope he might still convince the five holdouts to throw their lot in with him. The only reason George Santos matters now is because the parties see the seat as competitive in a special election.

A couple in Buffalo sheltered the body of a 63-year-old mother who died outside their home on Christmas Eve during the brutal blizzard that claimed the lives of dozens in the region, according to a report.

Carolyn Eubanks, who had a heart condition and required an oxygen machine, perished during a desperate rescue attempt by her relatives after she lost power in the monster storm.

Eubanks’ son, Antwaine Parker, told the Buffalo News that he knew his mother wouldn’t survive long in her Lovejoy home without electricity and a depleting oxygen supply.

When 911 operators told Parker there was nothing they could do for his mother, he and his stepbrother, Kenneth Johnson, decided to risk the typically 10-minute drive from Cheektowaga to her home.

In Saturday’s whiteout conditions, it took them a grueling seven hours to make the trip, according to the newspaper.

When the pair finally made it to Eubanks’ home, they tried to carry her to their car, which they had to park two blocks away. But she quickly became fatigued, Parker said.

“She’s like, ‘I can’t go no further.’ I’m begging her, ‘Mom, just stand up.’ She fell in my arms and never spoke another word,” Parker told the Buffalo News.

Desperate, Parker pounded on doors of homes on Ideal Street. Eventually one resident, David Purdy, answered. After Parker explained the gravity of the situation, Purdy jumped outside in his slippers and a T-shirt to help, according to the report.

Parker, Johnson, Purdy and another neighbor used a sled to get Eubanks to Purdy’s front porch through snow drifts as high as 3 or 4 feet.

Once inside, Purdy and Parker tried to resuscitate Eubanks, but it soon became clear that she had died.

Electricity availability is also a large consideration if you have an electric car, which is why you shouldn’t live in areas with overhead power and lake effect snow if you have one? (If I had to live in Buffalo, I’d have a large natural gas generator…)

With the White House in disarray in Trump’s final year in office, Johnny McEntee, 29, emerged seemingly out of nowhere to become head of the ultra-powerful Presidential Personnel Office, according to “The Final Act of the Trump Show” by ABC’s chief DC correspondent, Jonathan Karl.

According to accountable.us, the crisis Southwest has experienced in recent days amid a massive winter storm was “a problem of its own making,” noting that the airline opted “to spend $5.6 billion on stock buybacks in the three years leading up to the pandemic rather than making investments in infrastructure to be better prepared for extreme weather events like this week.”

His victory reminds me of Michael Flanagan’s victory over Dan Rostenkowski in 1994. Of course, that was a wave election and Flanagan was not a conman but some no name Republican with no credentials. But information about the candidates didn’t matter — it was a low turnout off-year election and Democratic voters often don’t turn out in those elections. Flanagan served one term and then was soundly defeated as the district returned to its Democratic norms. The turnout would have been better in this election since it included a hotly contested governor’s race.

Just a reminder of what a piece of shit Andrew Tate is.

Inside the violent, misogynistic world of TikTok’s new star, Andrew Tate

theguardian.com

Andrew Tate says women belong in the home, can’t drive, and are a man’s property.

He also thinks rape victims must “bear responsibility” for their attacks and dates women aged 18-19 because he can “make an imprint” on them, according to videos posted online.

In other clips, the British-American kickboxer - who poses with fast cars, guns and portrays himself as a cigar-smoking playboy - talks about hitting and choking women, trashing their belongings and stopping them from going out.

In 2016, his public-facing career appeared to be over when it had barely begun, when after being cast in Big Brother he was ejected from the house over a video of him hitting a woman with a belt. A second video emerged shortly afterwards, in which he is shown telling a woman to count the bruises he apparently caused to her. Both Tate and the women denied any abuse occurred, and said the clips showed consensual sex.

He also runs the scam “Hustler’s University”…

And here’s another Republican freshman asshole that Ohio has sent to Congress.

Newly elected congressman, Max Miller, desperately tried to minimize his involvement in helping organize Jan. 6 when speaking to the House Select Committee investigating the attack on Congress.

Miller, who previously worked for Donald Trump as the advance director, despite his criminal rap sheet, decided to run for Congress in 2022. Miller recently sued former chief of staff to the first lady, Stephanie Grisham, for her allegations of his abuse in her book. He lost the suit.

Miller’s testimony released Tuesday evening by the House Select Committee revealed an awkward moment where he seemed confused about the timeline on Jan. 6, Politico’s Kyle Cheney highlighted.

At first, Miller attacked campaign press secretary Katrina Pierson, who worked for Trump in 2016…

Yep, Another Asshole Republican…but of course since he’s a Republican Jesus forgives him.

Peter Thiel’s Conservative Dating App Floundering After 3 Months

And look who else is involved!

thedailybeast.com

Appfigures, another analytics firm, offered slightly more favorable estimates, though with the same downward trajectory: roughly 44,000 downloads in October, and 17,000 in the seven weeks since.

The app, cofounded by former Trump administration official John McEntee, continues to face an onslaught of negative reviews and criticism from its target demographic: young conservatives. Its intense verification process—intended to foster a sense of exclusivity and weed out potential trolls—has made it inoperable for many users.

“I downloaded this app more than two months ago, even got sent a package from them to become an ambassador, and STILL have not been accepted onto the app. That’s ridiculous and unacceptable,” read one review posted on Dec. 19.

No surprises. The GOP wants a stupid population they can fool into voting for them and destroying public education via “charters” and the rest of their lies is the easiest - and most profitable for the grifters - way to do it.

I note that here in my old hometown they have charters (built in two former elementary school buildings) because the GOP requires them to, but they also have reasonable funding and a big capital expenses referendum passed during the November election. BIG ROCK, IL — A local lay pastor at a church in Big Rock was found guilty of five counts of criminal sexual offenses against a child younger than 13, officials said.

Mark Rivera, of the 0S block of East Street in Winfield, was convicted of two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse after he sexually assaulted a girl, who he knew, between June 2018 and May 2019 while he served at the Anglican Church of North America, according to prosecutors at the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

In addition to his prison term, the 49-year-old must register for life as a sexual offender, per Illinois law.

The surprise is no one’s surprised

nyt

Trump considered ‘blanket pardons’ for those charged in connection with the Capitol riot

several of his top political allies pushed unsuccessfully to be included in such pardons

Now why would a member of Congress who swore to uphold the Constitution need a presidential pardon?

But the cost, a whopping….

Yeah, but 900 pounds in 1968, adjusted for COLA and a pound to dollar ratio of 1.2 equals right at $24,000, today.

And, you can’t drive around w/out your pants.

And anyway, if Secretary Pete does have the ability to control the weather like that, then he ought to be President….

If Pete can control the weather he’s overqualified for President.
