I have a little patio table that I used to use indoors as a work table.

It’s exactly the same the one on my neighbor’s patio, so I’m going to confuse them by leaving mine with theirs as soon as the snow melts so they can’t see tracks.

Sometimes tables divide.

Second Russian Defense Sector Bigwig Dies in Two Days

Alexei Maslov, a retired army general, was serving as a special representative of military-technical cooperation for Uralvagonzavod, Russia’s largest tank manufacturer, when he died “unexpectedly” last Saturday, the company announced in a statement.

No cause of death was given.

Poor Junior, just can’t remember much of anything on account of all the drugs.

talkingpointsmemo.com

Much of the rest of Trump Jr.’s deposition is riddled with memory loss. He doesn’t remember any reactions after the Pence call, whether he was paid his fee for his speech on Jan. 6, how he first discovered that the Jan. 6 rally had become violent.

What he does remember, alas, could be a Kendall Roy plotline on HBO’s Succession.

The investigator asks whether Trump Jr. remembers his father leaving Mar-a-Lago earlier than planned, missing the 2020 New Year’s Eve party.

“Do you remember that he wasn’t there for the party that —” the investigator begins.

“I do,” Trump Jr. interjects.

“I do, only because it’s my birthday,” he adds. “So there’s always a tradition of him getting up and sort of embarrassing me in front of a thousand people. So, you know, that’s why I remember it.”

Why did Trump leave Mar-a-Lago early, missing the party and his son’s birthday? Trump Jr. doesn’t recall.

As Fats sang, “Ain’t That A Shame!”

House Committee staffers may soon be without pay if House Speaker fight drags on beyond Jan. 13

politico.com

Politico reports that guidance sent out to committees in the House of Representatives this week lays out a dire situation for GOP staffers if the fight over the speakership is not resolved by January 13.

“Committees need to be aware that should a House Rules package not be adopted by end of business on January 13 no committee will be able to process payroll since the committee’s authority for the new Congress is not yet confirmed,” the memo states.

What’s more, the memo says that if the House has not passed a rules package by January 13th, it could disrupt staffers’ access to a ten-year student loan forgiveness program that could also impact their ability to qualify for loan forgiveness.

But why would Republican staffers need loan forgiveness when they have Jesus?

I think I’m able to explain things because understanding wasn’t entirely easy for me. Some things that the most brilliant students were able to see instantly I had to work to understand. I can remember what I had to do to figure it out. The very brilliant ones figure it out so fast they never see the mechanics of understanding.

Scientology’s David Miscavige Is Nowhere to Be Found, Attorneys Say

Prosecutors attempting to serve David Miscavige with a federal trafficking suit have apparently tried 27 times to reach the Church of Scientology’s leader to no avail, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Security guards at the properties promptly turned attorneys away, claiming they had no knowledge of where the so-called Captain of the Sea Org worked or resided. Legal reps for the plaintiffs have been working for months to locate the elusive figurehead, hiring a private investigator to track him down and interviewing former church members. But Miscavige is nowhere to be found. His last recorded address is the Church of Scientology International building in Los Angeles, with no other public residences on files, just like all members of the Sea Org. “Miscavige cannot be permitted to continue his gamesmanship,” said Neil Glazer, an attorney for the plaintiffs, in a motion earlier this month. The leader’s hearing is scheduled for Jan. 20.

My brother came home from high school one day complaining about how he’d been sent to the back of the lunch line for cutting and he got a lousy meal. (But it surely wasn’t the cabbage the ladies at my high school seemed to have available for a vegetable.) My dad leaned back in his chair and said, “Son, they’re teaching you manners. You don’t want to be cutting in line at the K-Mart and have some good ole boy pull a gun on you, do you?” My brother agreed that he didn’t want to have that kind of encounter.

That was over 40 years ago. My dad’s dead, so is Kmart, and my brother now sits in an easy chair. So he learned something.

This guy is an advocate for the homeless, wrote a book about it from a Christian perspective and boy, this one tweet has got a lot of people’s knickers in a twist today.

In between that and all the white dudes coming out of the woodwork to defend enslaver and anti-abolitionist John Witherspoon, Evangelical Twitter has been frothing today. For the latter, there were some asshats saying that there could come a time when prople look down on Jimmy Carter because he wasn’t anti-abortion. I let that person know that women aren’t slaves and why were they privileging a rapist / sexual assaulter over a woman’s consent? (Keeping in mind that children cannot consent but can get pregnant.) Fuck these people.

Yep. He’s been gone for a while, as far as I know, but of course Musk would want to welcome back another high-profile right-wing misogynist shithead. And now he’s rotting in a Romanian can. Nice.

I played a correspondence game against him in the early 80s. Knew he had a knack for the Sicilian so I tried the c3 Sicilian against him and beat him. Damn I wish I still had the game score…

Musk’s doing his best to promote fascism and white supremacy; but in this case it turned around to harm one of his fans. May justice prevail.

The Biden White House launched its first major broadside in response to incoming House Republicans likely to spearhead aggressive oversight of the administration.

A top lawyer for the president pledged in letters to those members that the administration would operate in good faith with them. But he also said that oversight demands made by congressional Republicans during the last Congress would have to be started over.

White House Special Counsel Richard Sauber said that the Biden administration had no immediate plans to respond to a slew of records requests that both men made the past several weeks. In those letters, obtained exclusively by POLITICO, Sauber described such requests as constitutionally illegitimate because both Jordan, who is expected to chair the House Judiciary Committee, and Comer, who is expected to head the Oversight Committee, made them before they had any authority to do so.

Farmworkers brace for more time in the shadows after latest effort fails in Congress
nprillinois.org

The American Immigration Business Coalition, which has been advocating in strong favor of the bill, argues farmers could save tens of thousands of dollars with just one year of frozen wages.

Together, high labor costs and worker shortages contribute to higher food prices, Naerebout argued.

“Our food security in this country is completely dependent on a workforce that is here without status. And we cannot survive without that,” Nearabout said. “And that for whatever reason, does not seem to create the impetus you would think it might in solving this problem.”

For a eloquent account of the Massacre, read Dee Brown’s 1970 book, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. If it doesn’t make you angry and ashamed of our American ancestors, you must be a republican.

Ah yes, Twitter, land of the liars.

Crypto scams in particular. NFTs even more so.

I tweet out some NightCafe images to get extra NightCafe credits.

Then someone pushing NFTs quote-tweets them:

Besides the obvious (NFTs are by nature a scam as is cryptocurrency), the image used for that profile of course is just stolen. So I went looking for the original, it was easy to find:

Twitter was always a tool for criminals (see: Tate) and Musk will do nothing about that but cheer it on.
