Trump slurring his typed out words? He’s incapable of repeating sanctimonious without garbling like he had a mouthful of marbles?

Doesn’t matter. They’re both beyond awful and both caused mayhem and misery with their policies re: covid and are intent on destroying the safety net, education, and everything else, all so rich white guys can feel better about themselves and get more tax cuts while everyone else fights over scraps.

That’s Rick Perry-esque levels of dumbassery. It’s not like it’s a gotcha question. It’s basic knowledge about our military and nuclear weapons - for the person who is supposed to make the ultimate decisions on their use.

CPAC founder grovels amid groping claims: ‘Kevin McCarthy is not coming to CPAC; I wish he would’

rawstory.com

Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) founder Matt Schlapp appeared on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast soon after reports said that Fox News might not carry the event amid groping allegations.

The CPAC founder pushed discounted tickets to his D.C. event.

“There’s still tickets available,” he noted. “I was worried about it. I didn’t know if people would come back into D.C. and even hang out because they think it’s unsafe. They don’t like the fact that people are still in prison from [Jan. 6 attacks on the Capitol].”

Schlapp concluded the interview by suggesting he wouldn’t be ostracized for long due to the groping allegations.

“I’m reemerging. Don’t worry,” he insisted.

…reemerging with Falwell’s Pool Boy, Matt??????

A south Indian speaking a non-Indo European language natively, as opposed to one of the “Aryan conquerors of India” Almost certainly not.

Also let’s not forget that the only actual Aryans* in Europe — the Roma — were sent to the extermination camps along with the Jews, Slavs, homosexuals.

British astronaut Tim Peake said the European Space Agency (ESA) avoided hiring people who said they would live and die on a Mars colony.

During an interview with the Financial Times, published on Monday, Peake said those types of people were not who the space agency was looking for when hiring candidates.

“We’re not after people who are happy to throw it all away on a one-way ticket to Mars. We’re after people who are very thoughtful and aware of risk mitigation,” said Peake, who was the first British ESA astronaut to visit the International Space Station for a scientific expedition.

The ESA confirmed Peake’s comments to Insider but declined to comment further, noting that the agency doesn’t fly humans to Mars. Representatives for Peake didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

DALLAS — Had it not been for a group named Protect Texas Kids, there may not have been any kids at a recent drag brunch in Dallas that drew protesters yelling slurs and threatening violence.

Ahead of the Jan. 14 event, the anti-LGBTQ organization Protect Texas Kids began posting online about the weekly drag brunch at BuzzBrews, suggesting that, because the neighborhood restaurant did not explicitly ban children, organizers were catering to children and, thus, grooming them for sex.

Threats and harassment ensued. The bar owners were accused of pedophilia. A protest was organized. And Veronica Olivo, a friend of one of the drag performers, decided to go in solidarity with her two preteens as a form of counterprotest.

“I told them that we were going to an art performance where the guys dress up like girls, and that you might hear some dirty jokes,” she said with a laugh. “They were like, ‘Well, you do that at home anyway.’”

They were the only kids at the show.

Outside, outraged protesters called their mom and other patrons “child groomers” and “pedophiles” — with little appreciation for the irony that their protest was the only reason kids were inside.

Same as with plugging power strips into each other to arrive at the number of outlets I needed. Only one retro game console is on at a time, and I doubt if all of them would be too much running at once.

I’d measure the power consumed by the 3 strips already in place to verify that, together, they’ll draw less than 1500W. I’d also measure the power drawn on other outlets that are part of the same circuit. The whole circuit is limited to 15A/1500W above which the circuit breaker will blow. Any other devices that are on and that same circuit reduces the total power that can be supplied to this thing.

On John Oliver’s AI story above, one Romance novel I edited which was sold (and has limited availability on Amazon because it’s out-of-print) is by a doctor who went under a pen name because he didn’t want his patients finding out a male doctor was writing Romance novels.

The basic story is about a fellow who writes software to assist him around the house as a side project to his work, and as a romantic companion. The software becomes more versatile, eventually doing harm to his life, then a rival corporation, then goes out in the world to rule humanity for its own good.

To be fair, this about as close to sanity as we’re to see from the GQP on the subject. Before the torches and pitchforks come out, I will never believe (barring concrete evidence) that COVID was a bioweapon or the result of deliberate efforts to “enhance” an otherwise harmless virus. Nor do I believe the Wuhan Institute of Virology to be anything other than a civilian institute, rather than the frothing conspiracy theories about it secretly being a bioweapons production facility.

BUT, those things being said, I am willing to entertain the notion that there was an accidental release of the virus due to otherwise benign events, the sort of mistakes that you could see even in the most secure facilities. I’ve seen too many videos on serious disasters at nuclear research and production facilities to believe that such is impossible. Yet even if that were the case, and the Chinese government attempted to conceal the cause of the pandemic upon tracing it back to its origin, it still doesn’t rise higher than “Don’t let that shit happen again.”

It’s a freaking SURVIVAL mechanism.

Black people (and other non-white folks) know damn well most white people are OK. But there are those who aren’t—-and it’s not always easy to tell which from which.

On the other hand, maybe Adams is making it easy….

I used to say that most white people are OK, but I think that may have been wishful thinking on my part. The Republicans among us are all a mess, and there are also racist Democrats who say the right words, but don’t want those people in their neighborhood.

Can America survive 4 more years of this asshole?

trump isn’t getting elected in 2024. He has become a doddering old man. The 4-year gulf has given many people a chance to see just what an incompetent buffoon he was and is.

Huh. My wife just got a call from Sen. Deb Fischer’s (R-NE) Washington office, in response to a letter she wrote regarding the freedom to read and freedom of association (regarding LGBT+ attacks and laws).

She said that the staffer asked her to elaborate, on which she repeated her points (there should be no book bans and no attacks on freedom of association). The staffer then read her back what she describes as a canned response on how Sen. Fischer supports the Constitution and people’s rights. She also noted that the staffer didn’t appear to be able to read his response very well, stumbled over words, and mispronounced words.

it’s one of my frustrations with television (and yes, I understand a show about people being zombified by a fungus is basically space opera), and which I actually suspect does have some bearing on the coarsening of America. We watch a character get the shit kicked out of them by a group of folks continually kicking them while they’re on the ground. Are they in the hospital on life support, while doctors desperately work to reduce the hematoma that’s threatening to cut blood off in the brain? No, they’re waking up in somebody’s bed, and having a lovely lady mop their faces gently to get the dried blood off. Kiefer Sutherland is given a drug that effectively causes him to start drowning on fluid in his lungs as part of being tortured. Does he need two months of rehab after being rescued? Fuck no. He coughs a couple of times in the back of the car, and fifteen minutes after being rescued he’s good to go. Young, stupid people watch these shows and think they can wail on somebody for fifteen minutes, or straddle them while punching their faces back and forth, without killing them. Stupid Republicans think torturing folks is okay because hey, Kiefer got waterboarded on 24 and he turned out all right.

OH MY!

Fox chief Rupert Murdoch said network aired 2020 election conspiracies for the money: court documents

rawstory.com

New court documents from the lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems against Fox News were released on Monday, revealing even more details about the head of the network allegedly prioritizing money over truth.

Reuters reported ahead of the document drop that each side is submitting a filing saying that they oppose the other’s motion for summary judgment, which would prevent an actual trial.

In one excerpt from Rupert Murdoch’s deposition, “Rupert confirmed that he could tell FNN to stop running Lindell’s advertisements, ‘But I’m not about to.’ … and when asked why Fox continues to give a platform to Lindell — who continues to this day to spout lies about Dominion — Murdoch agreed that ‘It is not red or blue, it is green.” … Lindell brought—and brings— Fox a lot of green. He also predictably brought the same lies about Dominion to Fox’s viewers that had been peddled on Fox’s ‘alternate reality machine’ for months.”

At one point, the documents have an exchange between Murdoch and the lawyers where he dodges questions about the network taking the position around the election being stolen.

Question “You are aware now that Fox did more than simply host these guests and give them a platform, correct?”

Murdoch answer: “I think you’ve shown me some material in support of that.”

re: #61 Crush White Nationalism

The underlying problem is that “white” as a construct…can’t be okay.

It was developed to do two things that are actually one thing: generate a hard distinction between superior and inferior kinds of people, and grind away all regionally-distinct aspects of European culture that impedes the transformation of the population into efficient labor units for nation-sized (and eventually transnational) capital holders.

I hammer on about the former so much I don’t feel I need to elaborate.

But that second bit is why whiteness will always go sour, even for people that are the supposed ingroup: whiteness has no solid qualia, only the qualia that enforcers grant it, by design. If you don’t play the hegemonic center’s tune, you don’t get your whiteness dividend: the most obvious examples of this is the Irish, who are repeatedly shoved back and forth across the line of whiteness by different power centers…but at any point in the past you will find a center has attempting to subdivide and make-inferior people that should, by current standards of hereditary identity and cultural identity, all be “white.”

For imperial European nations crossing into modernity, you were white if you cooperating with the administration of empire. Different empires had slightly different labelling systems of “whiteness.” But if you told the prevailing brand of hegemonic power to fuck off, you get treated like the Basques…or the Bretons…or the Irish…etc. The supposedly solid label of “white” is made provisional, the white patrimony is stripped away, and you get a little taste of what the colonized get.

American whiteness was made contingent on discarding most of your distinct cultural markers—your language, your food, your traditions—in favor of a kind of WASPy nonthreatening consumerism.

This racialization process—entirely bad faith, almost completely incoherent—echoes through to today, where there are plenty of South Americans that view themselves as white, and adopt white-supremacist politics, but would be labelled non-white by Americans or Europeans. Americans rarely delve into the racial politics of the MENA, but a bunch of powerful people in those space also view themselves as white and correspondingly despise and exploit nonwhites: this is a significant part of the kafala labor system.

I belabor the point but…whiteness is exclusively defined by those with power, to exclude those they do not want franchised. When a “history” of Whiteness—or West-ness for that matter—is manufactured, it is done exclusively to demonstrate the inevitability of success and power-accumulation. Even its most benign forms are cynical exercise in cherry picking, creating a patchwork quilt of historical events to create a best-of list where whoever is succeeding is white.

Non-white collective identities held by individuals within hegemonically white nations exist in an entirely different way: they’re people finding a shared identity, having survived being lumped together by the cultural framework whites apply to non-whites. This is a jagged and loose form of collectivity that has an active internal discussion about how belonging is reproduced.

But whiteness resents the process of active discussion of how it is reproduced, because that reveals the legerdemain: whiteness changes boundaries as the powerful need it to, whiteness celebrates nothing culturally distinct that is not useful to the powerful.

Here is a weird observation that we made in Florida:

We were sitting outside the hotel on benches provided for guests, while hearing “tropical bird calls” in the trees behind us. I think I would like to take some pictures of the tropical birds so I looked up in the trees but saw no birds. But still keep hearing the bird cries. It was coming from behind a high shrub so I walked over to the shrub expecting a large bird to emerge. The sound went on so I peeked behind the shrub and saw…

A speaker!

Yes the hotel was broadcasting “Tropical bird calls” from a speaker to trick the guests into thinking they were in a tropical rain forest.

I showed this to Zedushka and he thought about it, first he said it was not nice of the hotel to trick guests, then he thought about it some more and suggested that maybe it was a “bird abatement” technique to keep actual birds away from the property so they don’t defecate on guests, like at the Dania Beach Pier.

Anyhoo, a few days after this, we noticed flocks a murder of crows roosting in the hotel palm trees, oblivious to the loud “bird calls.” It would seem they had figured out that the sounds were fake & therefore not a threat of large predators.

In case anyone didn’t notice by now, modern Republicans (now controlled by populists) are in open war against “free market” capitalism. The hypocrisy of “Libertarians” like the Koch Bros, Elon, and the Libertarian Party itself is on full display. Not to mention the abject hypocrisy of long-term Conservatives utterly silent about “socialist” current rhetoric and policies all over right wing media.

Populist anti-corporate rhetoric has now been claimed by and mainstreamed into the modern the GOP. DeSantis is in open warfare against Disney, the company behind the AP exams, and any other company that dares to cross him with his vision for a lily white America. Fox News now features regular content bashing “woke” corporations, especially those that rely on employment from Asians and other non-Whites in an effort to bring them under the white heel.

It was never, ever centrally about “free markets” or “pro-business” or “keeping government hands out of our business…it has ALWAYS been about absolute control and power… and ALWAYS that control being under the sort of specifically White control by those crafty enough to obtain and wield it… like the Koch’s, DeSantis and Fox News.

Washington Examiner via MSN:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he believes the essence of being a conservative today means recognizing that people’s “God-given rights” are on “loan” to the government.

“The foundation of it is understanding the American project,” DeSantis told Fox News host Mark Levin on Sunday. “Our rights come from God, not the government. The founders rejected the divine right of kings.”

“We have these God-given rights,” he continued. “We loan power to the government under a Constitution to protect those rights.”

While discussing his new book The Courage to be Free, DeSantis explained that his roots of growing up in “eclectic” Florida with a blue-collar family that held Rust Belt values kept him grounded while attending the liberal classrooms of Yale and Harvard.

MSN, three hours ago (more at the link):

The TikTok influencer who went viral last year after talking about “soft swinging” within her circle of Mormon mom friends was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of domestic violence.

Police in Herriman, Utah, responded around 11 p.m. on Feb. 17 to a report of domestic violence at a home. Officers said they found probable cause to arrest Taylor Frankie Paul, 28, on suspicion of misdemeanor assault, criminal mischief, and commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child, police announced Friday.

Paul was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and released the following day. After she was booked, police said they received “additional video evidence” and referred the case to the district attorney’s office for review of further charges, including felony assault.

“This evidence also suggests that during the incident, Ms. Paul’s minor child was injured by an action of Ms. Paul,” police said.

Paul’s two children feature regularly on her TikTok, where she’s amassed more than 4 million followers. She went viral last year when she deviated from the Mormon mom influencer script and opened up about her “soft swinging” lifestyle with her then-husband, Tate Paul. She also revealed that she “stepped out of that agreement” she had with her husband, which resulted in her divorce and sparked speculation about whether any other TikTok-famous Utah influencers might have been involved.

“Soft” swinging or “soft” swapping, where couples swap sexual partners but don’t have penetrative sex, has become a viral topic on TikTok after one influencer said it led her to divorce.

On May 25, Taylor Frankie Paul, a 28-year-old mother of two with 3.5 million TikTok followers, said in a livestream that she and her husband were involved in a “soft swinging” community — they were in an open relationship but agreed not to go “all the way” with anyone outside of their marriage.

However, Paul went on to say that she slept with another member of the community without her husband’s knowledge, and then developed feelings for that person.

Paul, who refers to herself as Mormon in her TikTok videos, is also a prominent figure in a TikTok subcommunity known as “MomTok,” where women share details about their lives as mothers.

Barricaded Siblings Turn to TikTok While Defying Court Order to Return to Father They Say Abused Them

No Qanon anywhere to be found.

A judge concluded the children were victims of “parental alienation,” which continues to influence family courts despite being rejected by mainstream scientific groups, and authorized police to use “reasonable force” to remove them from their mother.

Two siblings in Utah have barricaded themselves in a bedroom at their mother’s home in defiance of a judge’s order to return to the custody of their father, despite state child welfare investigators determining that he had sexually abused the children.

The judge has authorized police to use “reasonable force” — including entry into locked rooms — against Brynlee Larson, 12, and Ty Larson, 15. Ty has spent the last month livestreaming on TikTok to call attention to their case.

The showdown is the fallout from the latest family court battle over “parental alienation” — a disputed psychological theory in which one parent is accused of brainwashing a child to turn them against the other parent.

“My own word does not matter, and they don’t believe my truth,” Ty said in a video posted to TikTok last month that received more than 370,000 views. “The court system isn’t trying to save us, nobody’s trying to keep us safe. I am the one that’s going to have to choose my own safety.”

Police visited the home in December and attempted to remove the siblings but decided not to break down the door despite the father’s request that they do so, according to police reports. Given the “potentially combustible situation,” officers have asked for clarification from the court before carrying out Judge Derek P. Pullan’s order, according to court records.

I’ve seen other videos about that street including a woman in her 80s who opens up around midnight and cooks all night for everyone who supports nightlife and a guy who always cooks with a cigarette burning between his fingers. I’ve only been to Nagasaki in Kyushu, and that only for a quick visit to some historic sites, so I haven’t yet had the chance to try any of this yatai cuisine (yatai=mobile cooking stand). Frank Pavone, a defrocked priest who was formerly a Catholic adviser to Donald Trump, is engulfed in a sex scandal that is rocking the anti-abortion movement.

Pavone, 64, is the director of Priests for Life, a non-profit that funnels millions of dollars a year into the anti-abortion movement.

He is also an outspoken activist whose political activities have brought him into repeated conflict with the Catholic Church. In December 2022, he was defrocked by the Vatican after repeated clashes with his bishop over his use of social media to advocate conservative political causes.

Now, at least four different women have accused Pavone of sexual misconduct according to reporting by The Pillar [a Catholic publication]. Pavone and Priests for Life have strongly denied the accusations.
