Heck even if your aim isn’t great, a shotgun will usually do the trick against an intruder.

And you won’t wind up murdering your neighbors in their own homes like an idiot firing an assault rifle at intruders would.

This doesn’t actually democratize the platform—everybody clumping around popular accounts is democratic choice—it makes the platform into two-tier system where the paid tier really only provides benefits for people doing stuff that’s for-profit, but also advantaged by short, casual impressions. Which is mostly grifters of some type.

this might be my favorite recent gun related story

Texas military man arrested at Canadian border #texas #canada #bordersecurity #dangertv

Guy apparently “forgot” that he had his gun in the car, you know, like all responsible gun owners do.

Granted, the border agents might have been a little too eager in their enforcement, but I can’t really say I feel bad for the guy either.

Question for Ryan: is it the fact that the person in the video is brandishing a weapon that is the reason you want the FBI to investigate, or is it because you’re assuming they are trans? Because if it is the whole brandishing of weapons and playing the “cold dead hands” game… um, yeah…

…..the P90 was designed as a compact but powerful firearm for vehicle crews, operators of crew-served weapons, support personnel, special forces, and counter-terrorist groups.

None of those living or working at my house, so I’ll stick with a shotgun. I actually don’t have a home defense weapon as such, that is, one loaded and ready at a second’s notice in the middle of the night. Nevertheless, I do have a shotgun and an M-1911 that can be accessed at need.
Btw, I have been urging the gun humpers to consider the various civilian flame throwers for home defense instead of firearms.

Of course. The “Home Defense” they’re blathering about is against LEO’s in Body Armor. Not that most of them wouldn’t actually foul their pants if they actually had the cops come through the door but that’s their fantasy.

Of course, an even better idea might be to avoid getting into a gun battle with someone better armed and prepared than oneself. Of course, it seems to me to be a very good idea to avoid getting into gunbattles as a matter of principle.

And yes, the 5.7x28 “duty” round is designed to penetrate car doors and body armor. But that means that other downsides. No one human designed tool is perfect for all use cases.

Also, the ATF declaring the “duty” round armor piercing and fitting in a pistol. Thus banning sale of the “duty” rounds to civilians.

Of course Right Wing Ryan is all in with owning as many guns as possible…until it comes to those he considers “un-Xtian” like LGBTQs, Drag performers, Muslims, Jews, Colored folks, liberals, Democrats and so on…

Well, yeah. They don’t believe those people are real people, so to them they’re not acting in a contradictory manner. They’ve always wanted to restrict the 2nd Amendment…they were just going to do it by getting groups of people labelled threats to the family, or the neighborhood, or national security.

They’re about halfway to what they want.

You can technically be black and have a legal weapon that you carry, but the law and law enforcement have been bent such that this will get you killed and it is distinctly possible your killer will get away with it. You can technically be a left milita operating in the same “we’re a club, a protest group” ways that right wingers do…do this will get you investigated and imprisoned and shot because cops and feds happily work with right wingers to get left wingers locked up.

What they keep trying to slide in place is that certain kinds of people are a priori mentally disturbed and thus a threat to society: the groomer panic but for lethal threat. They will do this shamelessly and with no self reflection, because their always-unstated premise is that they are always entitled to violence, the world is only right when their violence is greeted with at minimum acceptance…but ideally praise.

They are so committed to this vision that they are willing to accept the price of dead children: that’s not their gun culture reaching it’s logical conclusion—that all harm should be met with “heroic” individual violence—it’s just a sign that they have to be more cruel, commit further to killing quickly and on slimmer pretexts.

I think I know what the #1 source of malware and network-based crime will soon be.

Amazon, however, makes devices and benefits from collecting all sorts of data. It could benefit from the IoT, even if the company’s not fully sure how at the moment. That’s at least partly why the company has built “Amazon Sidewalk, a secure, low-bandwidth, long-range network designed to connect the next billion devices,” according to a press release.

Sidewalk offers coverage to 90% of the United States population and the company has made free test kits available for developers “to validate the breadth of Sidewalk coverage for themselves as they build Sidewalk devices,” the company shared.

“Many types of connected devices have been limited by the range of Wi-Fi and the cost of cellular technology, which has hindered the ability to connect devices like environmental sensors, leak detectors, and smart locks. Sidewalk is designed to provide a secure, low-cost way to invent and connect a whole new range of devices, and we can’t wait to see what developers build,” said Amazon Devices Senior Vice President Dave Limp.

Amazon Sidewalk offers “a secure, persistent, and low-cost connection to the cloud,” the company added.

Yep. What I own I have with specific tasks in mind, and they are appropriate to them. Several rifles, each with different proficiencies, a semi-auto shotgun for chasing upland birds or ducks, a CC handgun and a full-size handgun for range use. I especially love my M1898 Kraig carbine :) but it’s not a military weapon anymore.

You want a home defense weapon?

Get a Winchester 870 Wingmaster pump. Load it with 2-shot (goose load). I guarantee that it’ll go through drywall between studs, and make anyone in front of it sit down and consider the error of their ways, but more than likely won’t pierce the exterior of the house cladding.

Also, it’s a great bird gun.

Ammunition plants are worse. Far worse. But no one living near them needs Viagra!

Eau Claire Wi had a plant making .30-06 during WWII practically next door to the well field for the city. The water system for the whole city has been on reverse osmosis since the early 70’s via a very very expensive German system.

And the sound of a shotgun shell being jacked and chambered stops everyone within hearing in their tracks.

re: #130 William Lewis

problem with gun culture is…it’s culture

It’s built up over generations such that people within it can’t perceive that the base assumptions are social constructed…they’re just “true.”

If I were to look at US gun culture as an anthropologist, one of my first observations would be that it’s literally not about physical weapons, it’s about decades and decades of layering meaning onto ownership (emphasis: as opposed to handling, practice, or usage), and most of that meaning has to do with Americans being the most frightened people in the developed world. The guns are the end point of a long string of conclusions about the nature of people in general, the inevitability that certain kinds of people will become threats and thus self-protection must always be on hand, and a firm belief that all individuals are ultimately alone and that cooperation and mutual aid that aren’t forming an armed mob are degrading.

You are strapped because you’re one of the few heroes; everyone else will either become the enemy or pull you down with their weakness.

Deep in this is that Americans…mostly white ones…have a unique understanding of property and ownership that amounts “I am a little duke, and most other people are peasants that want what I have”…a belief I seriously think is the continuing ripple of building a country on people that were already there, with people you enslaved: the US promised many people the freedom of a plantation owner, and part of that “freedom” is using lethal force against all the caste of people that by all rights should kick your ass because you’re the source of their woe and basically been shit out by Echnida from their perspective. This is why this perfomativity shows strongest in white dudes—guns perform whiteness and man-ness very compactly—because they need to flip and reverse that they’re the volk living on the liebenstraum, beneficaries of a very bloody affirmative action.

This is some empire shit: everybody’s running west to claim their private fiefdom; settling in occupied land—a privatized invasion endorsed by the hegemons who will happily avenge your death and claim you stake; people solve labor problems by acquiring coerced labor—black, native, Hispanic, Chinese, people trapped in company towns, etc.You have guns to stay in control…of your empire…of people you’re trying to own…who by all rights should set you on fire and dance for joy. So you just flip and see yourself as the victim, and after generations it sticks.

It’s counterrevolutionary in nature, and has adopted the language of US reaction readily and kept apace with reaction in who it views as a legitimate gun-owner. Over the years as it’s gotten more explicit that both cultures are operating on the same platform: guns are for killing the wrong kinds of people, who are inherently dangerous and inherently in opposition to the various things that are Wholesome AmericannessTM.

Mass shootings can be characterized as honor killings, but they’re also an echo of colonialist violence and lynching: a defense of ownership, killing in an attempt to redeem a patrimony that they feel is owed. I kill you because of what I lack, what has been taken, and retribution for the insult. It’s a photocopy of a photocopy of picture of a pogrom.

None of this is helped by modern capitalism, which see the insecurity inherit in reactionary fears, and gets cartoon dollar-signs bulging out of its pupils: wthey’re stoking their own inferiority, doing half the work for us, and we can sell them simulacra of what they lack eternally, constantly moving the goalpost. Part of US gun culture is now, also, the conspicuous consumption: buying this shit is what you are, your character, the signal of your virtue. Which is a terrible thing to intersect with operating a tool designed to do lethal force: the message is that buying the gun makes you the hero, the actual duty of wielding it tends to be forgotten.

The signifier has been eaten by the signified, the rubes will pay for sizzle regardless of the steak…and that’s why all this shit is so fucking dumb even as it’s so dangerous.

IMO Ken White is making a category error here. No conservative “argument” is of the kind they discuss in law school (i.e., supposed to be based on reasoning about the facts etc.).

Conservative arguments are an expression of the lust conservatives have for ruling over others. Thus “owning the libs” is actually the closest thing they have to an honest expression of their views (except for the cutting edge types that are ahead of the times by calling explicitly for extermination of liberals).

This is also why I’m not a fan of satirizing conservative views — satire can’t work on people who are intrinsically bad faith (Republicans) or who are willfully stupid (the mushy middle).

That kind of tactic isn’t meant for those who strongly hold conservative views. It’s meant for those who “sorta” believe in them, haven’t thought about them very deeply or haven’t thought about them at all. (Though it is weakly useful for the hardcore believers as it denies them any toehold for them to think they have power over the liberal).

(Both tweeters are associated with the Israeli HaAretz paper. Which is leftward on the political spectrum.)

Translation of tweet-

wow An excerpt from Biden’s words: “Like many supporters of Israel, I am very concerned. They can’t go on like this. I think I made that clear. I hope that the Prime Minister will act in such a way that he will try to reach a real compromise. But we will have to see that. They know my position, the position of America, and they know the position of the Jews in America.’

Eastman Helpfully Explains Why A Fringe Legal Theory Before SCOTUS Is So Dangerous

He’s still allowed to continue pushing his seditious shit.

talkingpointsmemo.com

The Supreme Court, you’ll know from TPM, is currently considering a case in which Republican legislators from North Carolina argue that they, and no one else, have absolute authority over that state’s federal elections. The state courts don’t, the state governor doesn’t. Only the legislators do, they claim.

For this reason, the legislators argue, they can go ahead and gerrymander to their hearts’ content.

Their argument is a radical reading of the Constitution that has become increasingly in vogue on the right in recent years, known as the “independent state legislature theory,” or the ISLT. As TPM’s Kate Riga has noted, five of the Supreme Court’s six conservatives had expressed something that sounded like enthusiasm for the theory over the last several years. For that reason, when the Court took up the North Carolina case, Moore v. Harper, legal scholars began pounding the alarm.

A powerful profile of Trump lawyer John Eastman in Washington Monthly today helps make clear why. For some adherents of the ISLT (and Eastman is one), the theory isn’t just about gerrymandering. It’s about who gets to decide whether democracy gets to function — whether an election counts, or doesn’t. The theory was an animating force in the Trump election-theft effort, as Eastman makes plain in a conversation with the piece’s author, the legal scholar and journalist Garrett Epps.

“My view … is that when the election is conducted not according to the manner that it was directed by the legislature, it’s an invalid election,” he told Epps.

An invalid election.

Such invalid elections, the Trump lawyers argued in 2020 and early 2021, can simply be thrown out.

Just going to drop this in here, in relation to the mass-murder in Nashville.

Church Accused of Covering for Molester (Courthouse News, October 24, 2013)

NASHVILLE (CN) - A Presbyterian church covered up for a “confessed child molester,” and “in cult-like fashion” put children in the molester’s so-called “safe house,” a family claims in court.

Austin Davis and his daughter Daisy sued the Covenant Presbyterian Church of Nashville and its parishioner Dale Lewelling, in Davidson County Court.

Lewelling is not the alleged molester. The Davises claim Lewelling “assaulted the plaintiffs in an open hallway filled with people” during a period of turmoil at the church.

Austin Davis said in an interview that the alleged assault in the hallway came after he attended a class as a former member of the church.

“I got separated from my daughter and they were telling me I was breaking the law,” Davis said. His daughter was a minor at the time.

In the lawsuit, Davis claims that on July 14, 2008, “the defendants quietly accept[ed] the resignation of the confessed child molester, John Perry, from the Covenant Diaconate, with Lewelling recorded in the board minutes as being present in the room.”

Perry is not a party to the lawsuit, which continues: “The defendants intentionally conceal[ed] knowledge of the confessed child molester from appropriate authorities, the majority of the members of the congregation, and the plaintiffs. …

My outside guess is that the issue has a lot of play in it. And much depends upon how much Netanyahu and and his allies are willing to escalate and to burn the country.

Generally there has been very specific limits on internal political violence. The Yitzhak Rabin assassination by a rightwing fanatic was a major violation of this. However, last night some rightwing gangs did attack pro-democracy protesters and appear to have injured some folks.

Heck even if your aim isn’t great, a shotgun will usually do the trick against an intruder.

That’s what I have. Plus it’s nice and loud when you snap the breech closed. The sound itself might be enough to get a putative intruder to flee.

Given any option though, I’d rather just retreat to someone else’s house and call the sheriff. I can be confident of my ability to use a shotgun just after awaking from an intruder, and still wind up on the losing end of a shoot-out.

There are only four ways out of town: US-26 E/W, NE-92 W, and the gravel road to Alliance sixty miles away. It’s not to hard to stop the traffic.

My 6-Year-Old Son Died. Then the Anti-vaxxers Found Out. (The Atlantic, yesterday)

y 6-year-old boy died in January. We lost him after a household accident, one likely brought on by a rare cerebral-swelling condition. Paramedics got his heart beating, but it was too late to save his brain. I could hold his hand, look at the small birthmark on it, comb his hair, and call out for him, but if he could hear me or feel me, he gave no sign. He had been a child in perpetual motion, but now we couldn’t get him to wiggle a finger.

My grief is profound, ragged, desperate. I cannot imagine how anything could feel worse.

But vaccine opponents on the internet, who somehow assumed that a COVID shot was responsible for my son’s death, thought my family’s pain was funny. “Lol. Yay for the jab. Right? Right?” wrote one person on Twitter. “Your decision to vaccinate your son resulted in his death,” wrote another. “This is all on YOU.” “Murder in the first.”

I hope you get some recognition and respect in the village for carrying out that duty.

And some budget money for properly replacing the flags when it needs to be done.

I don’t know about the respect part: I’m not looking for that.

I first inquired about the flag on the first Memorial Day and no one had lowered the flag. I asked if I could do it, a village board member said “sure.”

Later when the flag was faded, I had a spare given to me for a donation to the USO and I asked if I could replace it, and they said “sure.” After that, the very elderly lady who ran the flag committee asked the village board to put me on it.

As for a budget replacing flags, there is no specific budget, but the village will replace them when I ask. The village has an account now with ConServ Flag Company in Sidney (I did some pushback when they wanted me to order flags over the Internet, arguing ConServ is a local company which helps our local businesses).

After I ask the board to spend money and they approve, I just walk into ConServ and tell them what I need, they give it to me along with an invoice, and I drop it off at the village clerk’s office. The next board meeting the board approves the payment and sends them a cheque in the mail.

The massacre at the Christian school in Nashville was indeed a targeted attack. The shooter killed the daughter of the head pastor and killed the head of the school.

Nothing in the article says it’s targeted, and the police have not said that either. The pastor’s daughter and the headmistress might very well be “targets of opportunity.”

Conservatives lying:

a) Calls for firing Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs’s press secretary for retweeting someone with a still from a 1980 film showing a woman holding two pistols claiming “this is what we do to transphobes.”

b) A claim that TikTok is awash in videos saying all Christians should be killed. (If all non-Christians in the USA actually tried to do that, it would be short and bloody and the Christians wouldn’t be the losers in that.)

The Conservatives have been waiting for this opening and have come out swinging: they are going to paint all trans activists as armed zealots whose agenda is to impose forced sex-change surgery on our innocent children at gunpoint, and are urging good Christian Patriots to pre-emptively stop them.

Yup, that’s Fairfax County Virginia. Apparently a woman with a handgun sitting in an SUV along US 1 aka Richmond Highway. It is being characterized as a mental health issue. The woman may be the one reported missing by the Charles County, Md. Police.

The area has been blocked off since yesterday. It is a major commuter route and I suspect that there are concerns what it will do to an already badly congested rush hour.

if you are curious, the location is given as 7400 Richmond Highway. Between Boswell Ave and Lockheed Blvd. Google maps locates it in Alexandria Virginia.

A second woman, not connected, was reported missing by Laurel, Md police. But she has supposedly been found by Fairfax County police and is safe.

I appreciate the deep love that these gatekeepers have for their respective franchises, but I confess I lack a little bit of understanding as to why THEY get to be the appointed arbiters of what the franchise means. I mean, that seems to be up to whomever currently owns the rights to the franchise. So if Amazon, for example, wants to put Black Dwarves in the Lord of the Rings, well, that’s their right, and as long as whoever gave them those rights doesn’t have any objection, then who are we to disagree?

Well, if you were worried about a massive meteor strike wiping out life on Earth, here’s something new to worry about.

It would appear from this report by the Royal Astronomical Society that a radio galaxy forty times the size of the Milky Way has shifted its relativistic jets from the supermassive black hole at its centre. They now point directly at the Solar System.

A team of international astronomers have discovered a galaxy that has changed classification due to unique activity within its core. The galaxy, named PBC J2333.9-2343, was previously classified as a radio galaxy, but the new research has revealed otherwise. The work is published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

PBC J2333.9-2343, located 656 844 372 light years away, has now been classified as a giant radio galaxy that is 4 million light years across and happens to have a blazar in its core; a blazar is an active galactic nucleus (AGN) with a relativistic jet (a jet travelling close to the speed of light) directed towards an observer. Blazars are very high energy objects and are considered to be one of the most powerful phenomena in the Universe. The research has revealed that in PBC J2333.9-2343, the jet changed its direction drastically by an angle of up to 90 degrees, going from being in the plane of the sky, perpendicular to our line of sight, to pointing directly towards us.

A blazar jet is made of elemental charged particles like electrons or protons that move at velocities close to the speed of light. These move in circles around a strong magnetic field, causing the emission of radiation across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. In PBC J2333.9-2343, the jet is thought to originate from or close to the supermassive black hole in its centre.

With the jet pointing in our direction, the emission is strongly enhanced and can easily exceed that coming from the rest of the galaxy. This in turn drives high-intensity flares stronger than those coming from other radio galaxies, thus changing its categorisation.

Galaxy changes classification as jet changes direction (Royal Astronomical Society, eleven days ago).

The New York Post picked up on the story yesterday, creating a text-and-image moving graphic to explain (with maximum fear) how this will kill us all. Other news outlets are now picking up the New York Post story and simply repeating it (such as the St. Louis Post-Dispatch).

It took some digging to get to the actual Royal Astronomical Society report, because the Post didn’t directly name it so the other outlets haven’t either.

for sake of devil’s advocacy, these people see Tolkien as re-imagining and re-telling lost Nordic folk tales. There is some evidence of that in his writings.

Now to the rest of us, these are just another set of folk tales among others, but to these fellows, their Nordic pedigree makes them somehow superior to the rest (need we explain why they think this way?)

In other words, the use of ethnic actors is tantamount to miscegenation of sacred mythology.

Like, it’s not even people who watch much less read the stuff, but people who simply react to what they believe is catering to child molesters in the case of Mushoku Tensei or believe is “wokeism” in the Amazon adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkiens works. Like, I’ve seen the same people rant about the books “Rambling Rose”, “Skipped parts”, “The War Zone” and their adaptations, without knowing that what the books describe actually is rather realistic… Call me a freak, but I’ve actually read Nabokov’s “Lolita”, and it sure as hell does not cater to child molesters.

I hate that fucking answer. Okay, great, you homeschool your kid. So the likelihood of her getting shot at school is practically nil. What about at malls, restaurants, concerts, sporting events, parades and all those other places that regularly get hit with mass shootings?

I see that answer more as “I am able to do that. Sucks to be you that you can’t”. And I would also bet that the “homeschooling” is done by a paid tutor.

“Guns are a Constitutional right. Abortions are not!”

Benjamin Franklin gave instructions on at-home abortions in a book in the 1700s (NPR, May 18, 2022)

One of the more surprising areas Franklin wanted to demystify for the average American? At-home abortions.

Molly Farrell is an associate professor of English at the Ohio State University and studies early American literature. She authored a recent Slate article that suggests Franklin’s role in facilitating at-home abortions all started with a popular British math textbook.

It’s more of a, “I homeschool my kids, and everybody should do the same, because why would you put your kid through ‘woke’ indoctrination?” Homeschoolers feel they are morally superior by virtue of the fact that they can precisely control the kinds of indoctrination their kids receive.

When I was a lad, I participated in a nationwide inter-church competition called Bible Quiz. Kids would memorize one or more books of the New Testament; in my prime, I had 11 of the 27 books of the New Testament memorized. (The gospels of Matthew and Luke; Romans; 1 and 2 Corinthians; James; Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. I also started memorizing some of the book of Acts, as an assistant coach, before college drew my attention away.) I was highly skilled at it, with excellent reflexes and picture-perfect recall of the pages I had memorized. This was considered extremely unusual, because I was publicly schooled; whereas almost all of my top competitors were homeschooled, and were drilled incessantly throughout the school day on the kinds of factoids and questions that would be posed in the competition.

Atheist counter-apologist Paulogia has complained about the homeschooling organisations in Alberta where he lives. He homeschools his child; he objects that most of the material available in the homeschooling groups is written as a Biblical homeschooling system (that is, not an education). When he brought it up in a conference there for homeschoolers, they threw him out of the organisation.

On a side note, a YouTube video he made recommended seeing the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. On that recommendation, my wife and I went there.

They ask where you heard of them. When my wife said “YouTube,” she got a facepalm from the receptionist. Apparently they get a lot of creationists who give them a whole lot of grief and proselytisation about how everything showing the evolution of plants and animals are all lies.

There is a growing atheist homeschooling movement in the United States and Canada, as more public schools try to insert Christianity into biology, science, history, &c.

Homeschooling Without God (The Atlantic, March 30, 2016)

For a small segment of parents and kids who opt out of traditional public schooling, something is changing: They are also opting out of religion. Studies suggest that young Americans are more likely than their older peers not to identify with any religion. While about one in five of all Americans aren’t affiliated with a religious group, the same is true of roughly one in three people in their 20s and 30s. And while atheists and agnostics account for just a sliver of the country’s population, more than two-thirds of them are under 50. The number of those under 18 may also be growing. In recent years, advocacy groups have successfully launched a handful of secular clubs in high schools across the country. For some of today’s kids, being non-religious isn’t special; it’s normal.

(more

The space for material for homeschooling is dominated by Christians, who are more interested in proselytisation than education.

And she misrepresented the study in a number of ways. It’s a small sample, and she conveniently omitted that the study investigated blood from pregnant women, giving a marginally worse outcome for both men and women.

When she went on the TERF train, I figured it wouldn’t be too long before she’d transfer to the “pureblood” fascist train. We’ll wait to see if she goes for eugenics next.

Over time, medical science eventually discovered issues related to blood transfusions — what matters and what can lead to worse outcomes. It would not be surprising if something related to gender could have an impact.

And one could/would expect that pregnant women might have something different going on in their blood (and body chemistry in general) given the condition they are in and how it by default is trying to bypass/adjust for some of the natural biological defense systems and allow provide additional capacities to fulfill increased needs.

It’s frightening. Democrats in power need to speak out more about what is happening to women and minorities in red states. Republicans pose a threat to everyone in this country including those living in safe blue states.

Our Democrats here in Nebraska are holding the line against the two anti-trans bills here. As long as that filibuster continues, the Republicans can’t get to their anti-abortion bill.

State senator Megan Hunt (D-district 8) filed a pile of amendments to every single bill to be discussed in the Unicameral, which allows for more debate and less legislation to pass. So far, the Unicameral has not passed a single bill in the session due to the Democratic filibuster, with 2/3 of the session over.

Out-of-state Democrats and the party itself need to help red-state Democrats who are holding the line against revocation of rights.

Planned Parenthood here notes that our state is getting a lot of refugees seeking their services (and not just for abortion) from the fascist-ruled states such as Texas and South Dakota. Our state is the oasis for the tier of states running from Canada to Mexico.

That night we were invited to the home of a young Vietnamese woman and her father. She was in college to learn Hotel Management. He worked as a Communist party bureaucrat during the day and was a land lord (he owned the apartment building they lived in and rented out the rest of it. ). Why Christian Colleges Are Closing, and What We Can Do

Over the last few months, several long-established Christian schools announced cutbacks, budget crises, and major restructuring.

They raked in a shit-ton of money, stashed it all in private accounts, and now left a lot of people hanging and out of money with nothing to show for it but a substandard “education”

There are a number of established ones with a history of solid education, but a lot of those that sprung up, especially in past decades, under the auspices of people like Betsy De Vos or Bob Jones are taking a lot of money to teach “Christian Leadership” (i.e. how to fleece a congregation to pay for your luxury home and support your mistresses/pool boys)

The thing I took away from it is the difference between forum shopping and judge shopping; while the former is still Not Great, the latter - the behavior that Texas has been repeatedly engaging in by suing the federal government in Amarillo, specifically on those cases they want to get injunctions in as quickly as possible to throw red meat to their base - is positively destructive to the concept of an independent judiciary. And a federal judge should not be trolling random uninvolved people in a ruling that ultimately serves to underscore the point of the party he is ruling against.

I think it’s that he wanted to control the narrative, and it doesn’t matter that he had no clue what the grand jury was working on or the schedule. He threw something against the wall, and his base believes whatever he says. Everything else is fluff.

The grand jury is still working. DA Bragg has indeed dragged his feet on multiple Trump-related investigations for far too long (a recurrent theme that includes the US DOJ investigations into Trump misconduct).

All the while, Trump gets to spew toxic crap about everything and everyone all the time, and can make the media cover his bulkshit every time he opens his trap door.

Ah. The story implies that the principal was warned it was a scam repeatedly by others. And states that the school’s business manager canceled the check before it was cashed. Yea, and all that would pretty much had destroyed whatever credibility that principal had with the staff there so a resignation was probably the best route for all involved at that point.

Once a red state grants personhood to a clump of cells, they will make it a felony for adult women and their accomplices to traffic the unborn out-of-state for the purpose of abortion. No, they won’t have border guards to do pregnancy checks on every woman leaving the state, but they will indict, try, incarcerate and possibly execute women and their accomplices who leave the state to get an abortion if notified by informers.

At this point, I feel the only people who actually homeschool their children are the hardest of the hardcore Christian nationalists/Christofascists. Your counter-apologist was swimming in some rare waters. Basically, if someone says they were homeschooled, I automatically assume they were the same sort of pretentious Christofascist twat I grew up competing against, dealing with them looking down their noses at me and their parents looking down their noses at my “lowly” “working-class” parents. The quiver-full moms insulting my mother because she had her tubes tied after life-threatening complications during my delivery were a bitter cherry on top.

My husband’s step-sister (a grad of the elite private Francis Parker school in Chicago) lived in a small community in Maine; she felt strongly that the public education was inadequate and so she home schooled her daughters; in this case there was no religious issue with either the home schooling or the public schooling.

GOP Rep. Clay Higgins: ‘There is no such thing as gun violence’

Coming from a big recipient of Russian money laundered thru the NRA who worships the Iron Penis.

rawstory.com

At a House Oversight hearing on Wednesday, Higgins blasted his Democratic colleagues who blamed the shooting on guns.

“I’d like to address something that seems to be a repeated talking point of my Democrat colleagues now regarding gun violence and gun violence being the number one cause of death of children in America today,” he said. “You’ll hear that a lot. Let me correct both.”

“There’s no such thing as gun violence,” the lawmaker insisted. “There’s only human violence. It’s intellectually unsound to state otherwise.”

Higgins also connected the issue to legalized abortion.

“CDC numbers, 620,327 legally induced abortions in America in 2020,” he noted. “That same year, tragically, 4,357 children died from firearm accidental discharge, suicide, and homicides.”

“And I don’t appreciate my Democrat colleagues constantly lying to the American people, referring to gun violence as if it’s not driven by human violence, and ignoring the fact that America has allowed millions upon millions of children to be killed in the womb,” he said.

She’s a Republican-turned-Libertarian, with a side of gun control support (which is painfully prescient, given her own experiences during/after the Covenant School massacre):

Hart and her family are Presbyterians.[61] In an interview, she stated that they attend church every Sunday and pray every night and before every meal.[62]

Hart has expressed her support for some Republican candidates, such as voting for Bob Dole during the 1996 election.[63] On November 5, 2012, the day before that year’s Election Day, she tweeted that she was endorsing Mitt Romney for president.[64][65][66] Hart has expressed support for increased gun control, marching in a Moms Demand Action demonstration in Brooklyn in May 2016.[67] On August 16, 2016, in the run-up to that year’s presidential election, she donated to Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson’s campaign.[68] On August 28, 2016, she joined Johnson’s campaign as its Connecticut chairperson.[69]

Until I saw the story about her involvement in helping to get kids to safety during/after the shooting, I had no idea she and her family lived here in town… the things you find out.

Students at Heyer Elementary School in Waukesha had prepared a rendition of “Rainbowland” for their spring concert, but school officials struck the song from the lineup last week. Parents in the district say the decision was made because the song encourages LGBTQ acceptance and references rainbows.

Superintendent James Sebert, who did not immediately return a call on Monday, confirmed to Fox6 that administrators had removed “Rainbowland” from the first-grade concert because it might not be “appropriate for the age and maturity level of the students.” He also cited a school board policy against raising controversial issues in classrooms.

Waukesha county was always the last one to report votes for Scott Walker on election day so they could make sure to “find” enough to ensure he won. Can’t have kids who would recognize shenanigans and complain.

Are they? Don’t they control the same southern states as before? As well as several others? SCOTUS has given them the clean bill of health to revert to the old time religion and white supremacy.

Dunno if this got posted. 39 migrants died in a fire in a migrant facility, because they were locked inside:

Ugh, this reminds me about what happened in Saudi Arabia, when a fire broke out at a girls school in Makkah and girls died because they were locked in because they weren’t covered enough.

When a deadly fire killed 15 school girls in Makkah — From the Arab News, an English language Saudi Newspaper.

Though the Saudi’s learned from that incident — make sure that girls schools are subject to the same supervision and regulation as boys schools (no substandard unsafe buildings for girls schools) and curtail the religious police.

When will we learn from our tragedies?

Organized on the-chans-which-must-not-be-named, perhaps?

No idea. There was a big pile of bomb threats involving the Univ of Pittsburgh back in 2012 that eventually resulted in a couple of arrests.

It’s a bit unfortunate that the privacy protection things like remailers and some of the proxy services also serve quite readily as a method for asshole activity and terrorist threats.
