The first of many shoes has dropped. Can we have a perp walk, please? Grand Jury Votes to Indict Donald Trump in New York.

A Manhattan grand jury voted to indict Donald J. Trump on Thursday for his role in paying hush money to a porn star, according to four people with knowledge of the matter, a historic development that will shake up the 2024 presidential race and forever mark him as the nation’s first former president to face criminal charges.

The felony indictment, filed under seal by the Manhattan district attorney’s office, will likely be announced in the coming days. By then, prosecutors working for the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, will have asked Mr. Trump to surrender and to face arraignment on charges that remain unknown for now.

There is a lot to muddy the waters. There is the letter to the FEC from Cohen and his attorney’s stating Cohen made the payment himself and that neither Trump or the Trump organization repaid him for it. Fairly absurd, but it brings up the whole were you lying then or are you lying now thing.

One problem is that said accomplice is also, apparently, the star witness. That’s going to give the defense lawyers a lot to work with, but there’s good reason to believe Trump will not have the best legal representation for this.

I try to be pro choice in all reproductive matters. The decision should be made by two, and made in the best interests of the third (and 4th, and so on). Women are more limited in terms of age by other-than-choice.

34 counts in the indictment could be juicy. My hope is that this is a structuring situation, where a single large hush money payment was broken up into many smaller pieces to evade the laws requiring reporting of large financial transactions.

What’s nice about structuring is that it is dead easy to prove, is illegal in its own right, and tends to be viewed as inherently admitting criminal intent.

So, Trump’s been indicted on 34 counts? What glorious news to wake up to here in Europe.

Also, given Trump’s well-known proclivity for witness intimidation, it seems entirely plausible that the judge will hit him with a gag order - and I’d say there’s a 99.95% chance Trump would promptly violate that order because he’s basically incapable of keeping his fucking mouth shut, and to enforce it would most likely require revoking his bail.

So maybe Trump really will see the inside of a jail cell…and sooner rather than later.
