Zsófia Boros - Le labyrinthe de Vermeer - from the new album ‘El ultimo aliento’

Zsófia Boros: Classical Guitar, Ronroco

The focus of Zsófia Boros’s third recording for ECM’s New Series is split two-ways, with one spotlight turned towards contemporary compositions from Argentina and the other on the multiple-idioms spanning music of French composer Mathias Duplessy. Fanfare magazine has spoken of the Vienna-based Hungarian guitarist in glowing terms, noting her “clear, beautiful tone, liquid phrasing, precise layering of melody and accompaniment, fluid figuration and her emphatic sense of mood and emotion” – all qualities that are especially apparent on El último aliento. The album takes its name from the Carlos Moscardini composition which closes the record. Other Argentinian composers interpreted by Boros here are Joaquín Alem, Quique Sinesi and Alberto Ginastera, together making for a vivid repertory that sees the guitarist alternating technique, pace and mood in supple waves. For Sinesi’s “Tormenta de ilusión” Boros switches to the ronroco, a stringed instrument that hails from the Andean regions. By combining the Argentinian music with the expressive pieces by Duplessy, Zsófia Boros creates a suspenseful programme that emphasizes her distinct touch, commitment and wide ranging influences in a quietly compelling manner. The album was recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano and produced by Manfred Eicher.

The Christian Right have been working hard at this level: county, district, town, and getting their people in to introduce and enforce their idea of God’s Divine Will

Is there any redeeming context I am missing here?

Basically attempted murder against an unarmed couple? With property damage?

They were on his property.

It means that in Florida you enter someone’s property at your own risk. If they can claim they perceive you as a threat, then they can use lethal force without consequences.

I’ve decided on developing a deeper relationship with yeast. I did a focaccia bread a few months ago with an overnight ferment. I messed up on the pan rise but it was super tasty. This time I did a 24 hr poolish first, now I’m at 12 hrs with the full focaccia with an overnight counter top ferment in the window sill. After two folds now it’s in the fridge for several hours. I’ll pull it out and do one rise to warm up, then a last rise in the pan before I top with sweet peppers, mushrooms, and maybe some fresh herbs.

While I’m contemplating how tasty my focaccia may be after a little help from a few billion of my closest friends partying it up and farting in my batter, I’m seriously thinking about doing fermented pepper hot sauces as a hobby. If I make big batches I can create my own labels and give to friends for holidays. If not, smaller batches for me.

Charlie Pierce goes after RFK Jr.

RFK Jr. Is a Long Way Away From RFK

link.esquire.com

It is important to remember that, earlier in his life, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. was one of the most important environmental lawyers in the country. He helped clean up the Hudson River. He was exploring the issue of environmental racism before there even was a term for it. It is impossible to find a specific point at which he began haring off after things like anti-vaccine theories, but it is at least the farthest fringe of causes he fought for, at least in his mind. And then there is the whole Kennedy thing.

Truth be told, Bobby Kennedy’s connection to Massachusetts was largely limited to weekends in Hyannis Port. True, he went to Harvard, but, after his brother was killed, he spent most of his time in Washington and New York. He was elected to the Senate from New York. His son’s decision to launch what may be his quixotic quest for the presidency in Boston was an attempt to reattach the family to its roots, geographically and every other way. His attempt to attach his outre opinions to the New Frontier, or to his father’s days with Cesar Chavez, is going to be a tougher pull. Right now, he’s closer to Marianne Williamson than to his father, his uncle, or, god knows, Honey Fitz.

First, I am very glad that nobody was physically harmed. Although psychological and financial damage are yet to be determined. And I greatly sympathize with the poor couple who nearly got killed.

Second, obviously I am against people shooting passersby and particularly the judicial system tolerating it.

Third, I have no interest in living in or defending Florida.

But, this case has so many negative effects that I am still surprised that it would be allowed to stand. Beyond the attempted murder of the innocent, which it appears the powers that be do not care about, there are tremendous financial costs which I suspect that the powers that be do care about.

What I got from the article was that, as far as I could tell, the case was active:

Davie Police confirmed with NBC6 that a gun went off at a home on Southwest 178th Avenue.

“We can confirm that a discharge of a firearm occurred at a residence at the 6500 block of SW 178th Ave in Southwest Ranches on the 15th. There were no reported injuries,” Davie Police’s statement to NBC6 said, adding they couldn’t release specific information and that the case was active.

Cleaning up the Hudson was indeed a lasting accomplishment.

It’s a long and slow process for a river, or a tidal estuary, to clean itself, but it’s happening for real.

40 years ago, there were signs on all the piers in the Hudson saying “don’t eat anything you catch here, totally unsafe.” 15 years ago, they changed the signs to say that pregnant women and children under 15 shouldn’t eat the striped bass they catch here, but everyone else can have 1 fish per month.

Now, there’s kayaking and swimming. Just try not to swallow too much.

I think we are where we are because a bunch of dudes fully integrated into their souls that 90s ad copy about how computer nerds were going to be the new jocks. The vision was never to revolt again the old hierarchical model of coolness, but to stage an internal coup and just keep the hierarchy otherwise the same. They’re fucking furious that the internet hasn’t made them culture kings.

Techbros, grifters, and weird right dudes like catturd have in common a belief that they deserve everything, and thus the real crime is everyone not acknowledging them as the better kind of person they deem themselves. All of the tweeking and twiddling with Musk Twitter are attempts to manufacture that importance, to force the outcome.

As such, it’s a insult for them to not get a blue check, but also an insult for them to get no further acknowledgement when they get a blue check, and a flagrant insult for other people to not hold blue checks in the same value.

I think the big thing is that a lot these dudes ooze transactionalism and self-involvment from their pores, and it limits their ability to reach people. As such, they largely dwell inside groups where there’s a pretty stunted vision of interaction, and they’ve convinced themselves that their goldfish bowl is a microcosm of reality.

They can’t be authentic, they can’t be vulnerable, so they’re limited to a mix of posturing and high-abstraction that has limited reach, but their core conceit is that they’re the new priests, the arbiters of things because

[various cultural fantasies of electness]

and when it lands that they’re not significant it’s an ego wound they can’t abide.

A high-end home project manager I used to work with long ago looked like Willie Nelson: a diminutive man, long grey ponytail, few words but all listened when he spoke. Always kind, but still made it work well in high pressure design-build projects. He taught me how to drink and enjoy spirits in a poetic artistry with strong hints of Baldwin.

Another dude and I were waxing about the glory years of his tenure before he retired to Wyoming. Dude called him a Mountain Sophisticate and it made all the sense in the world.

I run into this sometimes as an independent contractor for software development, too. People seem to think it’s cheap and easy to “build them an app,” and that it’ll be worth taking a deep haircut on fees because my name will be all over it on the App Store. First of all, no, my name won’t be all over it, yours will. You might have a point if we negotiated a portion of the sales into my contract, but you didn’t, you just wanted to pay me and be done with it. In that case, you will pay my rates, and by the way, I ain’t cheap. I know what my skills are worth on the open market, and people do pay it.

I never respond to request for bids to restaurants. They’re always cheap and if you actually get work they pare it down into a crap system then demand you show up and fix their Frankenstein system because ‘we’re losing business.’

I’ve had one restaurant in Kona reach out for a proposal 4 times in 15 years. Every time a new manager shows up. The first time I did a proposal the first time only to find they took my design and farmed it out to the local music store guy, who put in the same manufacturer but much smaller and less speakers with no subs. I got a kick every time I went in there and saw half the speakers aimed upward (because people complained they were too loud). But the best was when they had live music and they couldn’t get the feed to pipe into the audio system for low-level distro: the musician saw me and said ‘Hey ask him! He’s an audio dude!’ then they took me to the manager’s office to see what the music store guy put in: it was a mixing amplifier with a small hokey touchscreen. I couldn’t even figure it out. Might have been the pints I had. They said they’d never been happy because it was so hard to use and asked if I’d put together a proposal to make it easier. I said sure, give me a week. It’s been 5 years. Maybe next week, if I have the time.

re: #42 ckkatz

I was reading the tweet below and realized that Ghost of a Flea basically said that in post #31 -

…I somewhat disagree with the tweet/quote tweet. Their behavior can’t be explained just as self-loathing, because the world is full of people with self-loathing that project that inwards, which makes them hard to deal with, even unpleasant, but does not consistently create this pattern of behavior. I struggle with self-loathing, a bunch of people I know and love do; rarely does it turn into this kind of highly-personal grudge against massive bodies of strangers. Most self-loathing people long for acknowledgement, are numb to it when it arrives, but never transform that feeling into aggression and contempt on this scale.

The step that makes them shitheads is the projection, that idea that everyone is responsible for their feelings, and everybody else is fucking up by not giving them acknowledgement. I think a lot of these people are the end-product of enclosed cultures in which they’ve either

(1) actually had acknowledgement, strictly within a small sphere of socialization
(2) been told acknowledgement is their patrimony
(3) view acknowledgement as something they should be able to acquire through naked assertion of power, ie by flashing money or institutional authority.

They tend to veer right because the promise of the right wing is that people will be sorted, and that the elect will be granted a kind of total hegemony that is Natural and Correct and will therefore bring them everything they need: love, sex, attention, deference, self-fulfillment, peace of mind.

But let’s be honest here…not every piece of shit on Twitter is strictly a reactionary guided by political positions: they suck in diverse ways but are united by that sense of entitlement…which quite often they acquired from mainstream cultural sources. We have angry men, angry “Western culture” people, angry whites, angry rich people, angry capitalist hustlers, angry pseudointellectuals, angry pundits…they are united in the sense they have been cheated what they are owed.

It’s the exact opposite of classical self-loathing, the deep internal sense of lack; it’s that they feel that they possess unarguable superior value and others are sinners and fools for not accepting this.

This is the mindset of most of the police in this country.

Cops are a great example of an enclosed group that’s developed a self-pitying mythology in which they’re heroes in the abstract, to the degree that it’s treachery to point out how concretely they are heroes moment to moment.

So, I’m not entirely sure how it happened but just watched the finale of Star Trek: Picard and holy shitballs that was incredibly well-done. Some of the finest Star Trek TV I’ve seen in a long time.

do not spoil this, damn you! I finally got around to watching the end of season 2 with Q, and yes, I felt moistness in my eyes. There are so few series that manage to come to satisfying season enders that I’m just really touched when they pull it off.

We’re all discussing this because it’s such an obvious disconnect that shows the MAGAt’s insane worldview. They paid for status, they paid for their place in the hierarchy, and now the nasty libtards are rejecting the hierarchy itself and it drives them nuts. They want to force people to respect them instead of earning respect and can’t understand why it’s not working, because they think they should be able to force everyone to do anything they want.

I just pickled some white onion with sweet peppers, peppercorn, coriander seed, and cumin. It’s hella good. Would probably go well with… some fresh hot oven focaccia.

Belgium has destroyed a shipment of American beer after taking exception to its maker’s slogan that it was “The Champagne of Beers”

Yes, because it violates the appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC, controlled designation of origin). Champagne is a certain type of wine from the Champagne region of France, period.

While I’m somewhat sympathetic to this, most of this is bullshit agricultural protectionism. If you’re an up and coming cheesemaker or winemaker or whatever, you simply can’t call your cheese parmigiano or your ham jamon iberico no matter what the quality or taste, if it doesn’t come from the region. And then people don’t buy it, because it doesn’t have the AOC name and designation.

So OK, you’ll have to buy a farm in the area and produce it there, right? Good. Luck. These regions are all bought up by inbred families and organizations that are not going to sell to outsiders unless they are truly desperate.

If you think that the US agricultural industry has power out of all sane proportion to its numbers, say bonjour/hallo/guten Tag/hola to Europe. And just wait for the tractors to block all the traffic and dump shit on the Parliament’s lawn because they dare to make the farmers stop polluting the rivers.

Except it’s not MAGA people as some kind of exclusive clade, which to me actually makes it really interesting to explore the deeper cultural assumptions that creates such jackasses.

Because I’d say this is very…

- late-stage capitalism hustle (I have my check and that’s power, and that will mean money);
- life in failing empire pursuit of empty gestures of power;
- social-media magical thinking such that the phenomenon (the check marks ) informs the noumenon (the clout accumulated through cultural relevance);
- billionaire/techbro smooth brain (we can recreate cultural hegemony to install our own culture-priests with minor tweeks to a UI);
- people that imagine that consumption can create individualist distinctions and intent on self-mythologizing this purchase;
- people with a parasocial commitment to imagining this has to have significance because billionaire Elon Musk is doing it
- people with capitalism brain-fog that imagine that rich people and CEOs must have smart ideas even if you can’t see the mechanism;

such that each jackass has reached the same end point from mulitple starting points. Not a myriad of them—there’s, like five or six Types of Guy on display.

I did not Googlize Napa cabbage and learn that Napa cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis or Brassica rapa Pekinensis Group) is a type of Chinese cabbage originating near the Beijing region of China that is widely used in East Asian cuisine. Since the 20th century, it has also become a widespread crop in Europe, the Americas and Australia. In much of the world, it is referred to as “Chinese cabbage”. In Australia it also is referred to as “wombok”.

Earlier this year there were stories (true or not I do not know) about users leaving Mastodon.

Last week the Guardian ran this:

Thousands fled to Mastodon after Musk bought Twitter. Are they still ‘tooting’?

The decentralized social network has seen user numbers drop in recent months, but tech-savvy users remain passionate.

[…]

“It’s definitely the case that it’s slowed down,” says Nathan Schneider, a University of Colorado Boulder professor who researches collective ownership models and runs a small Mastodon server called social.coop. “I think a lot of people came and found it a little hard. Using Mastodon can feel like eating your vegetables.”

[…]

Mastodon’s diminutive size has turned off digital marketers, who have mostly shunned it and other Twitter alternatives as niche “distractions” that would be a waste of ad dollars. But it’s also disappointing some activists searching for a way to get their message out without feeding Elon Musk’s machine.

…]

ohnathan Flowers, an assistant professor of philosophy at California State University Northridge, started a Mastodon account last November after Musk bought Twitter. But after he posted some observations about the racial politics of the platform, users demanded that Flowers, who is Black, hide those posts behind content warnings.

“Their problem was that I wasn’t following the cultural codes that they felt should prevail in the digital space … [they felt there should be] a social entitlement to comfort around issues of race and racism,” he says.

When he declined to use content warnings, he received a torrent of racist abuse in his inbox. “On Twitter, it took me a little over two years to say something that got me a bunch of racist trolls in my DMs and mentions,” he says. “On Mastodon, it took 48 hours.”

[…]

I remain skeptical about Mastodon. Anything more complicated than a vending machine (insert coin, pull lever, get goodies) is a hard sell.

Sean Feucht, a proud MAGA preacher, expressed his bold and controversial Christian nationalist views during an appearance earlier this week at a church led by former President Donald Trump supporter, Jackson Lahmeyer, Rolling Stone reports.

Per Rolling Stone, Lahmeyer is not only the pastor of Sheridan Church, but also the founder of Pastors for Trump.

During his speech, Feucht, who “once prayed over Trump in the Oval Office,” insisted church and state should not be separate by saying, “America should be governed according to biblical law for the benefit of believers, as a way to prepare for the second coming of Christ,” according to Rolling Stone.

“It’s all part of The King coming back,” Feucht said to the congregation. “That’s what we’re practicing for,” he said, adding, “That’s why we get called ‘Christian nationalists.’”

More info on B-17’s… Short article, complete.

EAA, Others Wait for Next Step on B-17s

EAA is continuing its repair and restoration work on its B-17 Aluminum Overcast and is working closely with the FAA as the agency considers the best path forward to safely getting these treasured aircraft back in the air.

While Aluminum Overcast has been sidelined since damage to a wing fitting was discovered during a routine preflight check in spring 2021, other B-17 operators have also grounded their aircraft due to possible wing spar issues. Those wing spar issues could lead to the FAA issuing an airworthiness directive for B-17s in the near future.

“Even the most robust airframes, such as the B-17 with its legendary durability, need proper care to ensure their safe operation for years to come,” said Sean Elliott, EAA’s vice president of advocacy and safety. “We all want to keep ‘em flying and keep ‘em flying safely. We at EAA have had excellent cooperation from the FAA as we jointly review the situation and find the best path forward.”

This past weekend, the Yankee Air Museum announced that its B-17 Yankee Lady would be grounded “out of an abundance of caution” and is not expected to fly in 2023. That also means the aircraft will not appear at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 as previously announced. Those who had already booked flights on the aircraft during AirVenture will be contacted directly by the Yankee Air Museum regarding refunds.

“The warbirds community is resilient and united on finding a path forward for these magnificent airplanes,” Elliott said. “We look forward to getting them back in the air in the future, with safety always the number one priority.”

hi

The Texas Legislature is now trying to put a rating system on every published book, to help them ban books they deem inappropriate. Such a large market as Texas would be just like their textbooks: That would force publishers to make either two of the same book, or simply impose the Texas rating system on the entire country if it passes.

Needz moar people in Texas clamouring to have the Bible marked as sexually explicit.

Like most fascist laws, the bill proposes language so vague it would impose a self-censorious regime on Texas (and by extension, the rest of the country).

Texas House passes bill that aims to keep sexually explicit materials out of school libraries (Texas Tribune, April 19, 2023)

Twelve Democrats joined the Republican book-banning effort. The bill is HB 900.

If HB 900 passes into law, book vendors would have to assign ratings to books based on the presence of depictions or references to sex. A book would be considered “sexually relevant” if the material describes or portrays sexual activity and is part of required school curriculum. A book would be considered “sexually explicit” if the material describing or portraying sexual behavior is “patently offensive” and not part of required curriculum. State law defines “patently offensive” as materials that are an affront to “current community standards of decency.”

[clip]

Book bans have a long history of being implemented in a discriminatory manner, said state Rep. Ron Reynolds, D-Missouri City, during debate Wednesday. Titles targeted by book bans tend to center protagonists of color and tackle LGBTQ issues, race and racism, and teen pregnancy, he said.

Reynolds unsuccessfully tried to introduce an amendment that would require the Texas Education Agency to track which books are being removed from public schools. The bill’s author, Republican state Rep. Jared Patterson of Frisco, shut down the amendment, saying this bill was “not a race issue.”

I’m surprised the B29 could do that; Brackett is TINY. The longer runway is less than 5000 feet.
