Just for the record, Biden did apologize to Anita Hill for the hearings and took full responibility for the treatment of Hill. ” “As the committee chairman, I take responsibility that she did not get treated well. I take responsibility for that.”“

I suspect the reason they are so desperately trying to divert, dismiss and discredit is that they know that they are about to get so much attention from authorities it isn’t funny anymore….

So in this week’s edition of my county newspaper, state senator Steve Erdman (R-Bayard) has two complaints. (He never has solutions, only complaints.)
The first is the “atheist” senators filibustering the legislature over “common sense” medical legislation (the two anti-trans hate bills). (The only atheist in the legislature is Sen. Megan Hunt. The others are Christians.) He once again holds forth that atheists should have no rights in society.
His second is a complaint about so-called Christmas Tree bills. (A Christmas Tree bill is an omnibus bill where a bunch of unrelated bills are attached to it to get them passed in a short time. The amendments are referred to as “ornaments.”) He specifically complains about one Democratic bill now attached to the state budget.
That bill would raise the maximum one can sue for medical malpractice from $500,000 to $10,000,000. He claims this is bad policy that only allows people to get rich from frivolous lawsuits.
I just heard the news about Trump as I was going to bed last nite.
So does this mean we can refer to “rapist Donald Trump” at any time and he cannot sue us for defamation?
Means we need to start using the appellation consistently

I just realized something: Y’all is a pronoun.
The etymology of Y’All/You All is fascinating. And apparently it is used in South African Indian English as well as in the Southern United States.
One of my favorite diplomatic phrases in Wiki is in their article on Y’all-
Wiki - Y’all
It is usually used as a plural second-person pronoun, but whether it is exclusively plural is a perennial subject of discussion.

We are not amused…
Also singular.
This is a quote from a game of the Dozens between Melvin Gates and Patrick Melaine in Gary, Indiana, ca 1969:

Hah! Yinzer!
One thing that I have noticed with ‘Yinz’ is locally there is some variation in SouthWestern Pa. Some folks say Yinz while others say Yunz.
I never really noticed any pattern betwixt the two pronunciations. But that may be the fault of the observer rather than the lack of pattern.

Yunz wanna ‘nother Yuengling?
So Yuengling is a family brewery, and two of the sons opened a craft brew pub featuring their specialty, laurel-leaf flavored beer. It was a big hit but the the laurel oils contained in the bay leaves tended to numb people’s tongues after a couple of beers.
That made for a dull evening without the ability to converse clearly, so they hired entertainment from a local travelling troupe that was wintering in the vicinity: acrobats, jugglers, etc.
And it became known as

I will say that there is a Primanti’s in Hagerstown. So I went in some years back. And was really disappointed. It did not match my memories of the Oakland or Strip District Primatni’s of 50 years ago. :(
Of course, the fact that in those days, I often had sampled the Iron City heavily prior to dining may have defined both experience and memory.

UK National Secular Society, weighing in on the Conservative Party, May 9, 2023
Cabinet ministers to speak at Christian nationalist conference
The National Secular Society has expressed alarm over plans for cabinet ministers to speak alongside anti-LGBT campaigners at a conference organised by Christian nationalists.
Home Secretary Suella Braverman MP and Communities minister Michael Gove MP will deliver keynote speeches at the National Conservativism conference (NatCon) in London next week, according to the conference website.
Other MPs and peers, including former minister Jacob Rees-Mogg MP, are also confirmed as attending as speakers.
NatCon is based on a ‘Statement of Principles’ which asserts “public life should be rooted in Christianity” where a “Christian majority” exists.
The Statement of Principles adds that no nation “can long endure without humility and gratitude before God and fear of his judgment” and that for millennia “the Bible has been our surest guide” to “public morals” and “political traditions”. Christianity’s “moral vision”, it says, should be “honoured by the state and other institutions both public and private”.
It also appears to reject same-sex relationships, stating “the traditional family” is built around a “bond between a man and a woman” and is “the source of society’s virtues”.
The Statement of Principles embodies many characteristics of Christian nationalism. The Christian nationalist movement in the US, which saw a rise during the Trump administration, holds that the US is meant to be a Christian nation. Christian nationalist campaigners have been linked to the revocation of the right to an abortion and the January 2021 attack on the Capitol.
The conference is organised by the Edmund Burke Foundation, a US group with the aim of “strengthening the principles of national conservatism in Western and other democratic countries”.

Southern Baptist Convention sees largest single-year membership decline: What to know about why
The Southern Baptist Convention saw its steepest single-year decline in membership in 2022, continuing a 16-year downward trajectory, due in part to up-to-date member rolls.
Meanwhile, the Nashville-based SBC saw an increase in church giving last year, according to the SBC Annual Church Profile. Lifeway Research, a division within Lifeway, or the SBC’s publishing arm, released the yearly report Tuesday.
Data follows from the Lifeway Research survey in the article.
There are 457,371 fewer members and 416 fewer churches in the SBC in 2022 compared to 2021. The difference in members is the largest single-year drop in 100 years, according to a news release.
Membership in the SBC has been declining since 2007.
However, giving was up by 2% and in-person worship attendance up by 16% in 2022 from the prior year.
The catch.
Like many Christian denominations in the U.S., church membership is declining. But other factors are contributing to the SBC’s declines in 2022.
“Much of the downward movement we are seeing in membership reflects people who stopped participating in an individual congregation years ago and the record keeping is finally catching up,” Lifeway Research executive director Scott McConnell said in a news release.
The issue of outdated records has unexpectedly come to the forefront when the SBC Executive Committee, which manages SBC business outside of annual meetings, voted to approve recommendations to disfellowship churches in September and February. After the votes, some of the disfellowshipped churches said they had not been active in the SBC for years.

These are the kinds of hail warnings that when a storm comes along, we get a warning that being caught outside is deadly to humans and livestock.
The History Guy did a video on hailstorms which changed history (including the outcome of wars), linked below.
.DAY ONE…THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT
Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in far
southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. Hail over 1 inch and wind
gusts over 60 mph will be the primary threats with any storms.

the higher terrain of southeast Wyoming. Additional thunderstorms
are expected during the later afternoon and evening especially
over southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. Large hail over 1

Only thing that makes it more hilarious is that these jackholes had hoped to spend at least a portion of the coming year screaming that Hunter Biden is a pervert, a sexual deviant, and possibly even a predator like they’ve spent the past two years accusing his dad of being. But the automatic response back will be that neither has actually been proven such in court, something that Trump cannot say anymore.

i know this is convoluted but follow:
any R, not trump is trying to amass some sort of ‘base’ who will vote for them and not him (unless they’re strictly running for VP)
if they denounce trump, they’re toast - dead to the maga-base and trump will attack and destroy
if they don’t denounce him, well who of their target audience (not maga-rabid) would then still vote for them when they wouldnt denounce an adjudicated sexual predator?
If you can count the number of GOPers who have disavowed Trump and single out Trump and his supporters for enabling Trump’s sex predations and malfeasance, the problem is self-evident. The GOP remains in thrall to Trump and his criminally corrupt crime syndicate.
They don’t care he was found guilty of sex assaults and defamation in a civil trial.
They don’t care he was indicted on 34 state charges in NY relating to tax fraud and business practices.
They don’t care he’s under multiple federal and state investigations for interfering in the election certification process.
They don’t care he’s under investigation for mishandling classified docs.
They don’t care he engaged in violations of the US Constitution.
They don’t care he engaged in violations of his oath of office.
They don’t care that he put his family and cronies in positions where they could profit to the tune of billions of dollars in business directed at their efforts to support their house of cards business “empire”.
They don’t care that Trump overtly supports white nationalism, fascism, white supremacists, and curries favor with goddamned Nazis.
They don’t care.
They see all of it as a badge of honor for which they will continue to support him. They see it as proof that he’s their guy and they’ll pay his legal bills, support his reelection campaign, and cover up Trump crimes, all while everyone else recoils in horror (but not enough in horror to GOTV when it matters - because this was all self evident in 2016 and 2020 - and Trump still insists he won 2020 despite failing to prove any fraud occurred anywhere, let alone systematic fraud to deliver him a win). Rather, Trump is the one who engaged in multiple crimes, incited an armed insurrection to overthrow the govt, and his supporters have started getting convictions for seditious conspiracy in that effort.
Those in Trump’s inner orbit have yet to face the consequences either, as they have yet to get indictments handed to them - Meadows, Stone, and all the other inner circle GOPers who conspired or were accomplices with Trump and his insurrection/coup efforts re: 1/6.
So, if you’re only able to find a handful of GOPers openly calling for Trump to get out of the GOP, it’s because they’re feckless craven cowards who know that decades of GOPers radicalizing their base to ignore facts and reality is coming back to bite all of them and the nation hard. They refuse to speak facts or truth about Trump’s criminal conduct, and those few who have have been kicked from party leadership or quit Congress (Kinzinger, Cheney).
GOP delenda est. That’s the only way to save the nation.

I have been seeing mention on twitter of some limited Ukrainian counterattacks in the vicinity of Bakhmut. I am in no position to verify the claims. My general feeling is that it will be some time, and after the fact, before we know whether and where the Ukrainians launched their offensive.
Each of the various claimed counterattack seems to have been limited to seizing a small amount of critical terrain. For example, one says that the Russians were pushed back over a canal.
Additionally, many armies have doctrine that counterattacks should be made when an enemy is disorganized by their attack. The hope would be to destroy the attacking forces and retake the lost ground.
Here are a couple of threads on Ukrainian counterattacks from retired artilleryman Thomas C Theiner -
Two russian companies holding 3 km of front would be around 60 troops per km of front… that is just a fifth (!) of the troops per km NATO considers necessary to merely slow down an enemy.

They let him flop around unless kev desperately needs his vote
You’re talking about the people who are so petty, they refused to allow a temporary replacement on the Senate Judiciary Committee for the recuperating Dianne Feinstein. Let me repeat that: THE MAJORITY PARTY was not allowed to control a committee because Republicans were being petty little shits. They will circle the wagons around him, for no other reason than that the presence of an indicted criminal on the House floor will garner outrage from the Democrats.
Here we are again, what used to be “you kids get off my lawn” now results in a child murdered:

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) told Fox News that grandparents could join a force of armed military vets and retired police officers to protect schools from shootings.
Anything to distract from “its the guns”
Sure…
Lets send a bunch of untrained and unorganized elderly people with no insight or any of the situational awareness required in a school, and have them wave guns in close proximity to children.
Basically, all they would end up doing is contributing guns to any school shooter with a minimal amount of premeditation. Or maybe contributing a negligent discharge into a crowd of kids.

The Pressititution never stops. Even when Joe corrects that stenographer she still cites GOP lies.
So in totally useless information, I’ve been poking around The History Guy’s YouTube videos.
Prior to 1963, the Post Office preferred you write out the name of a state, though many people used traditional abbreviations for states (such as Calif. for California or Neb. or Nebr. for Nebraska).
In 1963, the Post Office came out with the two-letter list of states and territories. Only one state had it’s original two-letter abbreviation changed. (Nebraska: In 1963 it was abbreviated NB, but in 1967 the Post Office changed it to the current NE, to avoid confusion with New Brunswick, Canada.)
It wasn’t until the late 1980s that more than fifty percent of mail customers were using the two-letter abbreviations, mostly from protest against government regimentation (that also included the introduction of the Zip Code, where large protests were organised against the government assigning numbers to everything, often associated with Christian churches of all denominations).
Mr. Zip, the advertising mascot to introduce Zip Codes, was not owned by the Post Office. The character was originally commissioned by AT&T for an advert campaign they did not use. When the Post Office was contemplating the five-digit code, AT&T sent a marketing agent over to the Post Office to help it with the new campaign. AT&T allowed the Post Office to use their character royalty-free.
The same church protests, though muted, were repeated when the Post Office came up with its new Zip+4 codes in the 1980s.

Texas State Rep. Bryan Slaton, a devout Christian who was one of the most conservative lawmakers in the overwhelmingly Republican state, was unceremoniously expelled from the legislature yesterday by a unanimous vote of 147-0. It’s the first expulsion from the State House in nearly a century.
The vote occurred despite Slaton resigning from his position the day before, but it served as confirmation that it was, indeed, possible to be too toxic even for Texas Republicans.
His resignation letter offered no apologies for what he did. There was no remorse. Instead, he said he looked forward to “spending more time with my young family.”
What makes this scandal all the more egregious is that Slaton had a reputation for injecting his religion everywhere he could. This past February, he filed a bill to reduce or eliminate property taxes for families with at least four children, a move clearly designed to benefit “quiverfull” Christian families (like the Duggars) who have the resources to have several kids and own a home. Same-sex couples and people who have been divorced would not be eligible for the tax cuts. His goal, he said, was to send the message to straight couples: “Get married, stay married, and be fruitful and multiply.”
A couple years ago, he also filed a bill to charge anyone who has an abortion, along with the doctors who perform them, with assault or homicide, a crime punishable by death.
He has also called for a ban on children at drag shows, claiming kids need to be protected from “perverted adults.” When Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick made similar anti-drag remarks, Slaton praised him for it, saying he was proud of Patrick for “always being willing to stand with children against those who want to sexualize and take advantage of them.” He even referred to an all-ages drag show as a “grooming event.”
re: #152 ckkatz
But Grisham never spoke up at the time. Never once did she report that as it was happening, because she valued her job more than doing the right thing.
The entire GOP is corrupt and criminal and covered for Trump’s criminal conduct. Trump was and remains a serial sex predator who assaulted women and didn’t value them as anything more than playthings. He still doesn’t.
It’s hard to sum up the 2024 situation more succinctly than this: Trump is already calling DeSantis a groomer based 100% on innuendo with 0 penalty; and DeSantis cannot respond by citing an actual jury finding of sexual abuse https://t.co/tlxa8OxnSp

Well, Sen. Blackburn did suggest that the Geezer Grenadiers be used to supplement “armed military vets and retired police officers” as school security: though it’s a debatable point how useful a Volkssturm of superannuated “shoot first and study it later” types is going to be in terms of safety.

Saturday was local elections here in Texas. My youngest son voted for the first time. We looked up the candidates and initiatives, and thought we were going to be voting on some municipal bonds, but they weren’t on there. Come to find out, they were for a municipal utility district (which I don’t like) for an area in McClendon-Chisolm south of Rockwall, totaling nearly $2 billion. They passed 1-0.
Edit: just to be clear, had they been for my area, I would have voted for them because they roads and water they cover need to be improved.

What is the difference between a dreamsicle and creamsicle?
Though these terms have been used interchangeably since the start of the creamsicle, it turns out there is a difference, and it’s not a typo. Both have a solid sherbet exterior, but a creamsicle technically has an ice cream center while a dreamsicle has an ice milk center.

Who is going to pay for this “armed force”?

What happens when they accidentally shoot a black student for starting a fight or a brown skinned teacher because they thought the teacher was armed?

re: #230 Joe Bacon
Does it look like the Nebraska state government is going to shut down if no budget is passed?
I don’t know yet. The GOP desperately wants their property tax cuts and gutting the state income tax, but that goes nowhere as long as the trans hate bills remain. The Democrats and a few Republicans are continuing to hold the floor against passage of any meaningful legislation.
If the state legislative session ends, they will have to call a special session to pass the budget. The hate bills would still be on the legislative session for 2024, and the trans allies in the Unicameral have already said the would filibuster a special legislative session as well unless those two bills are pulled.
Several GOP pundits in the state have opined that Sen. Suzanne Kauth should pull her bills because the GOP can come back to those at another time. Like all conservatives, she believes her priorities are the most important priorities so she’s still refusing to do it. At the same time, she still has the backing of our quid-pro-quo billionaire governor Jim Pillen (R-pig farmer).

re: #65 No Malarkey!
Decidedly nonchristian Japan is thousands of years old. Japan is a rich, democratic country whose people enjoy longer life spans than Americans without fear of violent deaths.
And Japan very violently expelled Christian missionaries and suppressed (not completely successfully) Christian practice among converts at the beginning of the Tokugawa Shogunate. This was one of the prongs of sakoku (seclusion). Missionaries were seen as an existential threat, particularly after Japanese leaders learned that the Pope had divided up the world between European powers and that Japan had been assigned to (if memory serves) the Portuguese. Christians were not allowed back in until 1870ish (expelled in the 1620s and persecuted in the 1630s).
Ironically, for all the suppression, and for the fact that Christians now make up a mere 1 to 2 percent of the Japanese population, the influence of Christian educational institutions at the highest levels of government and society cannot be denied. High ranking politicians and members of the Imperial family went to Christian schools and universities. I find that remarkably ironic given the past history.

Author of controversial book on sex as ‘icon of salvation’ resigns his pastorate
There’s nothing new about a pastor resigning due to controversy over sex, but now a pastor has resigned because he wrote a controversial book about sex.
Josh Butler, co-lead pastor at Redemption Church in Tempe, Ariz., is author of the much-debated new book Beautiful Union. After The Gospel Coalition published an excerpt of the book online March 1, the criticism was so rapid and so intense that the article was taken down less than 24 hours later.
It was replaced with a full chapter from the book to give “context” to what Butler had written. That only sparked more criticism.
“We have found ourselves in an impossible situation,” Butler wrote to his congregation in an undated resignation letter circulating online May 3.
Butler begins the letter by acknowledging the excerpt from his book “generated some controversy.”
After time to pray and process, he and the church’s elders have determined he should resign, he says.
Redemption Tempe is part of a network of conservative evangelical congregations under the umbrella name Redemption Church Arizona. The Tempe location is one of 10 churches in the network.
He resigned on April 11, but it wasn’t made public until May 3.
Criticism has come over several ideas Butler espouses in the book — some ideas perhaps more understandable in Catholic and Orthodox traditions than in Protestantism. In the most notable example, Butler compares a husband entering his wife sexually to Christ inseminating the church. He also makes the man the dominant partner and the wife the submissive partner in the sex act as an “icon of salvation.”

i know this is convoluted but follow:
any R, not trump is trying to amass some sort of ‘base’ who will vote for them and not him (unless they’re strictly running for VP)
if they denounce trump, they’re toast - dead to the maga-base and trump will attack and destroy
if they don’t denounce him, well who of their target audience (not maga-rabid) would then still vote for them when they wouldn’t denounce an adjudicated sexual predator?
We have talked about this; Trumpism is still very closely connected to the person of Trump, although the ideology of xenophobia and misogyny and braggadocio is common to most of the rest of the party.
The only way a successor to his Crown will arise is if Trump himself names and grooms that person.
I don’t see that happening any time soon.

Free Kindle book today: Without a Trace: 1970-2016
The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 in 2014 is considered the greatest aviation mystery of our time but it does not stand alone. The second volume of Without a Trace begins in 1970, when a military pilot chased a glowing unidentified object only for both to disappear in an instant. How did India manage to misplace five fighter jets? Did the young pilot chasing an inexplicable aircraft over the Australian coast really get abducted by aliens? These questions and more are explored in volume 2 of Without a Trace. We explore modern mysteries as recent as 2016, with the sudden disappearance of an Antonov An-32 on a routine courier flight, while the aircraft ahead and behind saw nothing. Each case is laid out in rich detail and presented chronologically, with explanations of technology, aviation jargon and cultural aspects involved in each mystery.
Sylvia Wrigley introduces the crews, innocent bystanders and rescuers in this collection of true stories. Documenting the popular theories from each case, she uses her knowledge and experience as a pilot and an aviation journalist to demystify aviation jargon and narrow down each disappearance to the most likely explanations. The stories range from fighter jets to commercial airliners, all of which have vanished within our lifetimes without a trace.

I’m glad to see Santos (or whatever the hell his name really is) got busted. A couple of Czechs I know are reading the story here in Czech media, and they’re like, “Wait, seriously? A sitting parliamentarian can actually be arrested?!” and I’m like, “Yes, indeedy”.
That’s not possible here, as there’s parliamentary immunity from both civil and criminal charges - if the cops want to arrest a member of parliament, they have to ask permission and then the parliament has to vote on whether or not to lift immunity for the member in question.
re: #284 Dr Lizardo
Even for the President, technically, the “immunity” is only in the form of a longstanding DOJ doctrine. There is nothing legally preventing the DOJ from arresting and charging a sitting President, though the tradition has been to allow Congress to remove them from the Presidency via impeachment first. I imagine that in some part, this is to avoid the appearance of a coup d’état by the DOJ.

Even for the President, technically, the “immunity” is only in the form of a longstanding DOJ doctrine. There is nothing legally preventing the DOJ from arresting and charging a sitting President, though the tradition has been to allow Congress to remove them from the Presidency via impeachment first. I imagine that in some part, this is to avoid the appearance of a coup d’état by the DOJ.
and to some degree that no one thought it would ever be necessary to have to choose doj vs impeachment because it would all be so obvious

Fuck Mike Pence too. He thinks he’s got a snowball’s chance in hell of getting a GOP nomination? He enabled Trump’s disastrous administration, oversaw the disastrous covid response along with Jared, and caused trillions in damage to the economy along with a million dead Americans thanks to their know-nothing anti-science, anti-vax worldview that continues to take American lives (about 1,000 a week).
Pence wants people to think that Trump could have done better at controlling spending? Fuck that. They could have not passed the disastrous TCJA that adding nearly $2 trillion to debt without growing the economy. They could have done a halfway competent job of managing the pandemic, which cost trillions more.
GOP incompetence and the everlasting need for tax cuts for billionaires drives the GOP in every way imaginable, and it is yet another reason why Pence will never be in the WH, except on the WH tour.
The primary reason that Pence will never get the GOP nomination is the one decent step he took as VP: rejecting Trump’s efforts to overthrow our democracy.

re: #325 ckkatz
Looking at the Wikipedia entry, I came across this interesting tidbit:
Bear bile, a natural source of UDCA, is used in traditional Chinese medicine since the seventh century. Japanese scientists successfully synthesized UDCA chemically in 1955. The earliest reference to UDCA in PubMed dates to 1957 under an alternative spelling “ursodesoxycholic acid”, in a small-scale clinical trial.
Maybe that’s why the Chinese are ordering it - its a synthesized version of something they’re already long familiar with. That being said, I didn’t see anything in the Wiki article about efficacy regarding infectious diseases. Also, diarrhea is the most common side effect.
Does China not have western vaccines because they are being stupid and stubborn or because the West won’t send them over there?

Memories of Pitt in the 70s. The frats had kegs of Genesee Cream Ale, Stroh’s or Stoney’s at their rushes. None of them had Iron City beer which they all referred to as cat’s pee…
Stoney’s and Genesee would appear now and then. Genesee was a little more expensive and thus considered more of a “premium” purchase. We now and then bought a keg of Molson’s as well.
Pitt’s rush went partially dry in 1983 and fully dry fairly soon afterwards. And by the early 90s the national fraternities were paying a lot of attention to alcohol and liability policies in their chapters.* **
* - And I happened to be Rush Chairman of my chapter in 1983-84. To put it mildly it was a complete clusterfuck trying to get people to attend “dry parties” when their standard was underage drinking fests. And it sort of cumulated when there was a motion in a chapter meeting to allocate 30% of my budget to an “alcohol party”. Which also passed. (And yes I do explicitly remember the brother who made the motion.)
** - I did a lot of my fraternity volunteer work where I was in chapters in the late 80s and then 90s. It was constant skirmishing on the underage drinking and liability front since getting late teen college males (who were generally intelligent folk - they were mostly enrolled in engineering) that risking the entire chapter in order to be able to illegally drink alcohol on the chapter’s dime was a serious no-no. And to understand that any volunteer or the national organization with any ethics was not going to wink and look the other way. And as a volunteer this fight got re-waged every year and with multiple chapters. It simply burned one out eventually.
Topped off by having undergraduate members who are supposedly your brother and you share vows with blatantly lie to your face. And doing so when they know you know they are lying. (Yes, I do have a lot of baggage regarding my fraternity experiences.)

That’s not possible here, as there’s parliamentary immunity from both civil and criminal charges - if the cops want to arrest a member of parliament, they have to ask permission and then the parliament has to vote on whether or not to lift immunity for the member in question.
So the Czech Republic provides the same Get Out of Jail Free card to parliamentarians as is reserved here for the President (and, in practice, most rich people)

Daniel Perry was convicted of murder in the shooting death of Garrett Foster, who was carrying a rifle during a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020. A jury rejected self-defense claims.
As a reminder—Hot Wheels has promised to pardon this killer.

Ah the frats. I remember when ZBT wanted me to join but nope, wasn’t interested. Good pal joined Pi Lambda Phi. Memories of smoking up at 4PM watching Lost In Space reruns on WTAE.
That was the only time those shows made any sense…
I remember groups gathering in the lounges in the Towers* to watch Chilly Billy. Usually with at least alcohol there. And definitely some fries or pizza from “The O”.
The ones I hung out in on occasion were usually pretty good about picking up after themselves. And if we knew who was not picking up their pizza boxes, etc. then words would be said to them in addition to mentioning it to the RA** on their floor.
* - Set of three circular multiple story dorms. Elevators only stopped on every 3rd floor. And said floor had a lounge area with a few sorta-sofas and a TV. Sneaking alcohol past the front desk was not difficult. Having alcohol or smoking in the lounge was a no-no. A lot depended on who the RA (Resident Assistant) on duty was that weekend since some were more lenient than others.
** - The RAs were juniors or seniors who knew each other and had periodic group meetings. Worked out pretty well for handling difficulties on an informal basis. They also, obviously, had some avenues to be petty or make thing difficult for people who were being assholes. I had the same RA both years I was in the dorms. He switched floors from one year to the next and it just happened to match the floor switch I did at the same time.

Unfortunately, criminal immunity is not entirely uncommon in European countries. Personally, I don’t like it, as to me it’s little more than a license to commit crimes. Civil immunity I get, but not criminal immunity.
It is actual immunity, or simply immunity to being indicted and tried while they are in office? I can see the latter to some degree as a way to avoid a legislator getting harassed or removed.
Czech President Petr Pavel said that his government is transferring two batteries of the Kub air defense system with a “quite a large” number of missiles to them to Ukraine. He also said that he does not rule out the future supply of combat training aircraft Aero L-159 ALCA for…

The only reason that she’s speaking up now is that Carroll won her suit against Trump - showing Trump engaged in sex assault and defamation.
Other women will come forward corroborating that Trump is a sex predator - what we know was true before he entered WH.
The only reason she is speaking up now is that Trump lost re-election. Once that happened she made money through a book less than flattering about the Trump WH. So this is not a surprise given her post-Trump career.

And this is where we really have to make sure we enforce liability laws. For owners, sellers and manufacturers.

They can only be indicted and tried if the parliament votes to lift that member’s immunity. There have been cases where the majority party has declined to do so with one of their own members, thus allowing that person to continue breaking the law with essentially zero repercussions.
I sent an email to my old boyfriend in Portland for his birthday last month. He said he was impressed that I remembered the day. Then he took a guess at mine, one day off. The same day Mr. w always thought it was. I only reminded him once a year…for 38 years. This must be a sign. I’m supposed to change it. My mom was supposed to be in labor longer. I was a caesarean birth, so on the doctor’s schedule, not the mom’s.

This would make a great South Park episode.
I don’t usually care for that show but _that_ would be an episode I’d watch LOL!

So if Abbott pardons him the dude just walks away free without having to serve any of the 25 years?

I like how he’s basically admitting aloud what most people have known for weeks, that Bakhmut was never about establishing a strategic victory or laying the groundwork for Russian advances, it was purely a morale booster that they thought could benefit them by grinding down the AFU. Instead, the numbers show that almost half of all the losses Russia has sustained since the start of the war happened in Bakhmut and they’re still sending men to their deaths because they hope they can finally claim a “win.”

Yes — but he can’t just pardon him on his own. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles must pass a recommendation to the governor. Without that, he cannot issue a pardon.

So basically, a do-over of the Verdun strategy*?
Makes sense, since they’ve already re-booted several other WWI scenarios in Ukraine: Tannenberg, the Somme: why not some more of the classics???

We’re supposed to listen to wild allegations about Hunter Biden from people who happily serve with George Santos, who is under indictment for multiple federal felonies?
Not Santos’s family members, Santos himself.— Ron Filipkowski (@RonFilipkowski) May 10, 2023
re: #391 Dangerman
On the same day that a GOPer gets indicted and arrested on federal wire fraud and other financial crimes, these fuckers are holding a presser where they admit that they’re pursuing a witch hunt to keep press busy parroting their bulkshit on a stick that Biden did something “wrong”.
re: #393 Dangerman
After all this time, money and effort, House Oversight doesn’t have a single payment from anyone to Joe Biden for anything, and can’t point to a single policy that he changed, implemented, or impacted as VP because of Hunter.

The Russians royally fucked up with Bakhmut. It turned into a meat grinder, that’s for sure - but for the Russians. If they were smarter, they’d cut their losses, abandon Bakhmut and withdraw to fortified defensive position in anticipation of the upcoming Ukrainian offensive.

This has become Putin’s very own Stalingrad, a money pit that he continues to shovel resources into for nothing more than a propaganda “victory.” Meanwhile, reports are coming in that the defensive lines in the south that the Russian Army has spent months preparing are so sparsely manned that they’ve effectively indefensible. IOW, much like last summer, the AFU is poised to go through the Russian Army positions like shit through a goose and lay siege to Crimea before year’s end.

Kind of like all that alleged Voter Fraud that couldn’t be found.
But I’m sure they’ll say the Deep State(tm) is suppressing the truth and move on to the next conspiracy theory.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) told Fox News that grandparents could join a force of armed military vets and retired police officers to protect schools from shootings.
Anything to distract from “its the guns”
A member of Sen Blackburn’s staff should hand her a lit sparkler to wave around while she speaks to distract her audience from how stupid she sounds.

Fingers crossed. I figure if it gets to that, the Russians are gonna be frantically calling for negotiations and a ceasefire to try to cling to what they’ve got left.

Not that it will do them much good at this point, as Zelensky has stated publicly that he won’t even discuss negotiations with Putin until the matter of Crimea is “concluded” or words to that effect. He does not intend to allow Putin to walk away with a “victory” in keeping any of the country under this thumb on the empty promise of “peace.”

Just have an aide standing to the size jangling a set of keys, the effect will largely be the same.

Now that the GOP is making books illegal, schools can divert the funds for educational materials to armed guards, high walls and razor wire. Win-Win!

Unlikely. Few leaders in current western history are willing to sue for peace in the midst of a set of setbacks. They almost universally think that if they get a win they then have something to base a cease fire on.
Once there is serious internal disorder breaking out then the calculus quickly changes.

re: #106 Targetpractice
Only thing that makes it more hilarious is that these jackholes had hoped to spend at least a portion of the coming year screaming that Hunter Biden is a pervert, a sexual deviant, and possibly even a predator like they’ve spent the past two years accusing his dad of being. But the automatic response back will be that neither has actually been proven such in court, something that Trump cannot say anymore.
Proper use of the phrase:
Dear Republicans:
Fuck ALL Y’all.
