From the previous thread:

It certainly wasn’t like that for everyone (cough my family), but the Fifties through Seventies was probably the greatest opportunity for the unwashed majority of the country to actually have a shot at making a modest but decent living for themselves and their children.

Then they pulled the ladder up.

The same generation behind the sexual revolution, the anti-Vietnam War protests, the push for equal rights for minorities and women, went hugely for Ronald Reagan because of the misfortune of the Iranian Revolution (which Reagan had a hand in ratfucking so he could get elected) and the misfortune of the hostage rescue mission.

Typical of a conservative, as soon as Ronald Reagan got what he wanted from Iran (delaying the release of the hostages so he could get elected), he threw Iran under a bus.

The compliant media helped with their nightly “days since the hostages were seized” counters to ensure that everyone was reminded about what was happening during the reëlection campaign of former President Carter.

The only good (I refuse to be charitable) is Ronald Reagan died losing his mind to Alzheimer’s Disease and Jimmy Carter is still alive.

Any job handling money like this should have more than one person involved. They might work together to steal, but odds are a lot lower than when one person is in charge.

CHICAGO — A former manager with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is accused of stealing at least $1.6 million in funds meant for day care services and spending the money at a casino.

Shauntelle Pridgeon was charged with fraud in a federal complaint that was handed down earlier this month but unsealed this week after Pridgeon was taken into custody.

Pridgeon had worked as a social service community planner for DCFS from 2015 until the fraud was uncovered last summer, according to the complaint. She was responsible for approving daycare providers for children placed under the care of DCFS.

Interesting!

NASA Research Reveals Saturn is Losing Its Rings at “Worst-Case-Scenario” Rate

solarsystem.nasa.gov

New NASA research confirms that Saturn is losing its iconic rings at the maximum rate estimated from Voyager 1 & 2 observations made decades ago. The rings are being pulled into Saturn by gravity as a dusty rain of ice particles under the influence of Saturn’s magnetic field.

“We estimate that this ‘ring rain’ drains an amount of water products that could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool from Saturn’s rings in half an hour,” said James O’Donoghue of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “From this alone, the entire ring system will be gone in 300 million years, but add to this the Cassini-spacecraft measured ring-material detected falling into Saturn’s equator, and the rings have less than 100 million years to live. This is relatively short, compared to Saturn’s age of over 4 billion years.” O’Donoghue is lead author of a study on Saturn’s ring rain appearing in Icarus December 17.

Scientists have long wondered if Saturn was formed with the rings or if the planet acquired them later in life. The new research favors the latter scenario, indicating that they are unlikely to be older than 100 million years, as it would take that long for the C-ring to become what it is today assuming it was once as dense as the B-ring. “We are lucky to be around to see Saturn’s ring system, which appears to be in the middle of its lifetime. However, if rings are temporary, perhaps we just missed out on seeing giant ring systems of Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, which have only thin ringlets today!” O’Donoghue added.

Various theories have been proposed for the ring’s origin. If the planet got them later in life, the rings could have formed when small, icy moons in orbit around Saturn collided, perhaps because their orbits were perturbed by a gravitational tug from a passing asteroid or comet.

Pssst. GI Bill. Tens of millions went to college without having to go into debt. Then the FHA subsidized their mortgages, in suburban developments the Feds had subsidized the building of. And the highways that made those suburbs into places where big-city workers could park their families.

The vast majority of voters, including “christian” “conservatives”, were totally in favor of this. At least until the Civil Rights Acts and associated court cases, when suddenly these government bennies weren’t only for white people anymore. That’s when it became “communism” and had to be ended.

internal controls, audits, compliance, etc are very difficult to implement in these situations.
the orgs are always underfunded to start with.
it’s hard to allocate scarce resources to stuff like internal controls, audits, compliance instead of directly to ‘the children’ - or whatever the agency’s mandate is

when making the budgets, the legislatures see compliance (or most any indirect expenses) as a waste of money they already dont want to spend.

Why? Because these mammals specifically hunt for pelagic fish like tuna. They bite the tails off to disable the fish.

This started off as a training for young orcas, bite off the rudder of a sailboat. Easy peasy.

The issue now are pods of young males doing what young males everywhere do when put in groups. Practice makes perfect.

$60K a year for that? That’s a lot of money for a startup or a small business. I’ve had bosses at a small business excoriate me for spending hundreds - HUNDREDS - of dollars a month over my allotment on cloud services.

The person they interviewed at the end noted the bill only “punishes” people who legally obtain guns, while many crimes are committed using illegally-obtained guns.

I wish someone would push back on that brain-dead NRA talking point. Nearly every gun sold new was legally-obtained originally. It became an illegal gun because it was stolen (she mentions people leaving them in cars and having them taken in a robbery) or illegally sold.

Those would count as “failure to control your weapon” (especially with a stolen gun you didn’t report stolen because you don’t trust the gubmint). Loss of rights, jail or fines if appropriate.

Yes, I tell people that every gun used by a bad guy was once owned by a good guy.*

Ken’s problem is that he fired a bunch of his lawyers/employees when they claimed he was breaking the law. They then claimed whistleblower status and won a $300 million + settlement. Then the Feds stepped in and the run for the exits by the Lege started. He also called the R Speaker of the House a Liberal and a Drunk. He is by no means a Liberal. (ahem)

As for the Security and Exchange Commission torts, that is soooo far in the rearview mirror and such a low priority, that most folks have forgotten it exists.

I am SO in love with this!

Six Years In the Making, the Elaborate ‘Grand Jardin’ by Lisa Nilsson Pushes the Boundaries of Paper
thisiscolossal.com

Lisa Nilsson (previously) has spent years perfecting a technique known as quilling in which thin strips of paper are rolled into coils and then pinched and nudged into shape in a process she likens to completing a puzzle. With a history thought to extend back to Ancient Egypt, the practice rose to more recent popularity in 18th century Europe. Narrow edges of gilt book pages were a popular material, creating metallic surfaces when rolled into place. In her most recent work, “Grand Jardin,” Nilsson has expanded upon this traditional method by building up more dense applications of the medium and assembling on a much bigger scale. Combining shimmering gold pieces with vivid hues of Japanese mulberry paper across the surface, the ubiquitous material transforms into a remarkable topography.

Take a look. You won’t be sorry!

So You Think You Know the Banjo?
If you’ve ever considered banjo music to be an American creation, you don’t know the banjo. In fact, if you think of the banjo as an inherently Southern instrument, you don’t know the banjo. If you think that the banjo can teach us nothing about American history, Southern culture and modern race relations, then you certainly don’t know the banjo.

The Colorado River at the Colorado/Utah state line is currently running at 32,300 cfs. That’s double the mean average for today. Incredible. And we’re just now getting to peak runoff. The mountains are still very snowy.

Twitter can go ahead and die.

I wouldn’t cry one fucking bit if Twitter HQ burned to the ground and the Twitter sign fell on and smashed Elon’s gigantic goofy-ass melon like Gallagher’s giant mallet.

If that’s the only thing that gets sacrificed to get this done, I’m OK with it. Despite the fact that losing that funding will actually end up incurring more debt, because catching tax cheats was projected to be a big boost to government income.

It will be very bad; it means that the IRS is understaffed and won’t be able to help normal people navigate the tax code. It means that tax cheats like Trump continue to escape accountability. Let’s propose eliminating all subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.

On the right side of history:

That’s a Kora, or gourd harp. The banjo was also a gourd instrument back in Africa. The tunable resonator replaced it once it got this side of the water.

Rhiannon and the Carolina Chocolate Drops were Killer Bee, BTW. We saw them here in town 15 years on their Genuine Negro Jig tour in an upstairs performance space on Sixth Street The joint was packed and jumpin’. The crowd made me proud. They got the Grammy the following spring.
