I am skeptical of the mortality statistics, especially from red states. Case count from all states is irrelevant since most cases are not being reported now — and most were not officially reported in the past either since the disease was relatively mild for a majority who were infected..

Even considering all of that, it’s striking that Florida’s reported Covid death toll on that website is 6.9 times greater than Minnesota’s reported Covid death toll (88,288 deaths/12,806 deaths) while Florida’s 2021 population is only 3.8 times greater than Minnesota’s 2021 population (21.78 million/5.707 million).

So basically, China’s “peace plan” for Ukraine is…

The Chinese envoy dispatched to push Beijing’s peace plan for Ukraine carried a clear message: U.S. allies in Europe should assert their autonomy and urge an immediate cease-fire, leaving Russia in possession of the parts of its smaller neighbor that it now occupies, according to Western officials familiar with talks in capitals across the continent.

wsj.com

LOL China can just fuck right off with that shit. Here’s my counterproposal…

We sail the US Pacific Fleet straight over to Taiwan, and once we’ve arrived, we announce that the United States of America officially recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign, independent nation.

Oh…and we’ve also given the Taiwanese nuclear weapons and that any attempt to attack Taiwan will result in immediate military retaliation against the PRC.

Let’s see how Beijing likes that.

Greater mortality. But I suppose that a retrospective study by state would probably indicate the magnitude. Certainly normal flu deaths plummeted during the period due to the measures many were taking to protect themselves — masking and isolation.

Non-starter. Why should the imperative be on Ukraine to cease fire rather than on Russia to withdraw from Ukraine?

The emerging deal, which is not yet finalized, would raise the debt limit and cap federal spending for two years, according to people familiar with the matter. Also, defense spending would be permitted to rise 3% next year in line with Biden’s budget request.

Not good, not bad, as the line from Chernobyl went.

The problem is gonna be can McCarthy sell this to the bomb-throwers in the GOP?

Statistics can be misleading. Florida has an older population — median age is 4 years higher than Minnesota; about 28% of Florida residents are 65+, while only 17% in Minnesota are that age. So given the age differences, you would expect Florida mortality to be significantly higher.

Ed Ames, whose long career included hit recordings, TV stardom and Broadway roles, died May 21 in Los Angeles at 95. No cause was given.

Ames began his career in the 1950s as part of the singing Ames Brothers quartet, joining with his brothers Vic, Joe and Gene. The group had a hit with “Rag Mop” in 1950, and totaled 49 chart hits before ending their association in 1963. The group also had a syndicated TV program, The Ames Brothers Show.

Ames also branched off into a solo career, hitting the charts with “My Cup Runneth Over,” “Who Will Answer?” and “Try to Remember.”

Ames switched gears and did stage tours in the off-Broadway shows The Crucible and The Fantasticks, and then scored a starring role on Broadway in Carnival! He later starred with Kirk Douglas, Gene Wilder, and William Daniels in the Broadway production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

It will only be a problem if McCarthy insists that a majority of Republicans in the House have to approve it. That would be 112 Republicans, and I would think the leadership team can whip more votes than that to prevent a global depression.

They work to tear everything down because they want everyone else to be as miserable and unhappy as they are.

They’re fueled by resentment. Resentment, and hatred and an unfocused, indefinable rage against everything and everyone - and Trump tapped into that, and packaged it and sold it back to them. That’s why they love him…because he’s just like them.

Except that in this case, they’re dealing with Joe Biden and the EU, not Chamberlain and Daladier: the Munich guys dealing with Hitler from positions of, respectively, weakness and indecision. And also, unlike Czechoslovakia in 1938, the “victims” here have a great deal more agency (and a seriously more-advantageous military position).

An example of intelligence and a good education put to very stupid use to build delusions demonstrating once again that intelligence is no guarantee of sanity.

It is nice that he wants the Proud Boys to be locked up. He can be OK for a moment for a bad reason when he’s trying to shift the target off of himself.

As Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Stewart Rhodes yesterday to 18 years in prison—the longest yet for a defendant involved in the January 6 insurrection—he explained why the leader of the far-right group the Oath Keepers needed to be behind bars for a long time. “You pose an ongoing threat and peril to our democracy and the fabric of this country,” Mehta told Rhodes.

Mehta was right about that. At his sentencing, Rhodes was unrepentant. In a 20-minute speech before the court, he portrayed himself alternately as a character in Kafka’s The Trial; as an “American Solzhenitsyn,” after the Soviet dissident writer who was sent to the gulag; and as a misunderstood advocate for peace. This monologue was standard fare for Rhodes, a Yale Law School graduate who likes to align himself with literary heavyweights and historical leaders.

And yet Rhodes also unwittingly revealed deepening fissures in the far-right movement that, two years ago, resorted to violence to keep Donald Trump in the White House. The defendant used some of his time to distance himself from the Proud Boys, another extremist organization, with whom he had met in the days before the insurrection. “Unlike other groups like the Proud Boys, who seek conflict and seek to street-fight,” Rhodes explained, “we deter.” I’ve been misunderstood, he was telling the court; the Proud Boys are the ones you want.

Just remember that 2/3 of the GOP House caucus in 2020 voted to decertify Biden’s election— that makes them traitors and/or cowards. And the size of the treason caucus has only increased after the 2020 election. Given Trump’s position on this issue, how many are going to be willing to vote against Trump? Massie and Chip Roy, both of whom (surprisingly) were not part of the treason caucus, are likely to vote against this deal.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A man is charged with attempted murder after Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies say he stabbed his roommate in the neck while dressed as a feline.

According to the arrest report, the victim was in his room on Tuesday, when Omar Gutierrez, 32, walked up behind him wearing a cat costume. Gutierrez then plunged a knife into the back of his roommate’s neck.

The victim asked Gutierrez why he stabbed him. Gutierrez said, “It was instinctual.”

The roommate called 911 and when emergency crews arrived he was “pouring blood” from his neck. He was rushed to the hospital.

Does the position of the Kooky Klown Kaucus really matter here (in terms of final passage of some sort of debt-ceiling agreement)? Jeffries, Pelosi and crew seem to have lined the House Democrats up pretty solidly; ALL 213 of them signed on to the “discharge petition” which would have brought a “clean” (i.e. with NO concessions to the GOP) debt-ceiling bill to the floor, so - except MAYBE for a couple of outliers - likely “aye” votes on the agreed deal. So, if Mr. Speaker can round up just enough votes to get the thing through, it’s done. Of course, it won’t satisfy the nutbars (nothing will) - but at least a national/global economic disaster will have been avoided.

He doesn’t need to sell it to the bomb-throwers. He just needs to bring it to the floor, where a half-dozen of the sanest R’s join with the D’s to pass it.

Hastert rule says any GOP leader has to be able to pass the bill solely with GOP votes if necessary. They have never rescinded that, and to do so would almost certainly mean a revolt and challenge to his speakership.

Nope. The Hastert rule was that a majority of Republicans needed to support the bill not that it had to pass with only Republican support.

138
🐈 Crush White Nationalism 🐈  May 26, 2023 • 2:45:58pm
The Illinois attorney general released a report Tuesday finding that almost 2,000 children suffered sexual abuse by 451 Catholic clergy between 1950 and 2019.

“It is my hope that this report will shine light both on those who violated their positions of power and trust to abuse innocent children, and on the men in church leadership who covered up that abuse,” Kwame Raoul said in a statement. “These perpetrators may never be held accountable in a court of law, but by naming them here, the intention is to provide a public accountability and a measure of healing to survivors who have long suffered in silence.”

As the attorney general’s statement appears to acknowledge, state law limits how long after an alleged crime a suspect can be charged, meaning many of these allegations may never be heard in a court of law. So the question then turns to what exactly we are to do with this information.

Rampant child sexual abuse is occurring in churches — not at drag shows (DC’s Martian Manhunter [I may have gotten that wrong] at MSNBC)

There are quite a few things that happened in FL before the FBI raided DT’s place.

I love that a maintenance guy involved in that talked. The wealthy never think about the maintenance and cleaning people.

Unfortunately, right and wrong doesn’t matter as much as who has power and what your relationship to them is, but I’ll happily take the win if he’s removed.

I have to give some credit where it’s due - The Texas state legislature is not slow-rolling the Ken Paxon impeachment proceedings. The Texas House will be debating the recommendation starting at 1PM tomorrow afternoon and voting to impeach before the end of the day. If the vote passes, the Senate will begin the impeachment trial by early next week.

Impeachment proceedings against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton begin Saturday

They probably decided he’s of no more use to their party and thus there was only political benefit in prosecuting him.

I got all of my chores that I have been putting off done today. I cashed in my coins and was pleasantly surprised that I had over $200 saved. And of course since it is the Memorial Day weekend I stocked up at DiBruno’s.

re: #191 Oblongatis

Just to chime in about the earlier discussion regarding the +6 poll results. I stopped giving polls credibility since 2016. The polling methods used tend to overcount old folks with land lines. I look at polls as the opinion of Ma & Pa kettle.
Hence the polls are better for the left than they look.

My kid and his friends as well as my friends’ kids in the 18-25 age group are pissed about Dobbs. This demographic are generally no show at polls but the GOP gave them a reason to care. These are also the demographic the polls almost totally miss.

I have guarded faith for the future.

We just mailed our Nielson diaries today. Nielson will learn we listen to a lot of AM radio in our house. (The only FM radio we can get at home is Christian hate radio; we can only get music or NPR in the car).

Polling is done by more than just landlines.

As for polling surrounding the 2016 election, the problem was hype (especially in the media) that Hillary Clinton couldn’t lose.

If you actually looked at the polling, Donald Trump was never outside the margin-of-error.

If you look at the balloting after the election, if “Did not vote” was a candidate, it would have won forty-five states. While voter suppression from the GOP was certainly a factor in the election, it wasn’t the only one. How many people just stayed home and didn’t bother (or voted third party over “a pox on both your houses” sense of privilege)?

In 2016, 54.8% of the eligible voters cast a ballot in the presidential election (1 point higher than 2012). Back to the Great Depression, the highest number which ever turned out was in 1960 (62.8%) and the lowest which ever turned out was in 1996 (49.0%). Thus the 2020 election fell in about the middle of the average since 1932. There was insufficient urgency from Democrats and independents (who more often break for Republicans).

In 2020, the nation had the second-highest turnout since 1932 (62.0%).

The 2022 midterms did not turn into the media-hyped Red Tsunami, either.

Since 2016, the awful policies of the GOP are in sharp focus for voters as well, along with education amongst young voters form sources as varied as TikTok to Teen Vogue. (On the latter magazine, they’ve had a huge surge in adult subscriptions to their print magazine because the price is very low and the political analysis is actually quite good.)

Perhaps there are some yet-to-be-disclosed items about Paxton that are so damning that the Republicans in the state have decided that it will be too damaging to have him around much longer?

I fully expect to see reports of attempted arson of Target stores in the news before July 4.

Or at LGBTQ bars and nightclubs during Pride Month, with threats or actual attacks connected to groups like Patriot Front or the Proud Boys.
