There’s a fire in L.A
And since you moved there back in May
I wonder, should I call to see if you’re alright?
Yeah, you’re a million miles away
But I still think of you each day
And hope the weather doesn’t keep you cold at night

NB: this is a pic of the Texas House, and those voluminous docs are the impeachment Articles against AG Ken Paxton.

Someone else may have pointed this out, but that famous whistleblower that won’t testify in front of the senate was whistleblowing now because of things that happened in 2020.

The most notable aspect of Shapley’s complaints is that every bit of it is procedural. He complains that he saw “deviations from the normal process” of the investigation, and a series of “irregularities.” In particular, Shapley complained that following a meeting last October in which he argued with attorneys from the Justice Department’s tax division, he was left out of some follow-up meetings. Not a single detail, statistic, or example was provided to support the idea that there was actually anything wrong with Hunter Biden’s taxes. Everything under discussion appears to be one member of the IRS who didn’t like how other people in the FBI—his own agency—and the Department of Justice were doing their jobs.

But in all of this, the one thing that both Republicans in the House and media outlets seem to be overlooking is timing. Shapley filed his complaint in the summer of 2020. It’s the Trump Justice Department, the Trump FBI, and the Trump IRS he’s complaining about.

It’s Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest days of the summer tourism season, so of course a person shows up in the dead of the night to say that her family made a spur of the moment decision to drive 2 hours from their original destination so their kids could spend a day at the beach and now are in search of a room for themselves and their gaggle of crotch fruit.

Good f’n luck.

Texas AG Ken Paxton invites supporters to rally at state Capitol to protest vote to impeach
(Associated Press, posted in Eastern Time Zone so it’s in the future to me, May 27, 2023)

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Friday urged his supporters to protest at the state Capitol when Republicans in the House of Representatives take up historic impeachment proceedings that threaten to oust him.

The House has set a Saturday vote to consider impeaching Paxton and suspending him from office over allegations of bribery, unfitness for office and abuse of public trust — just some of the accusations that have trailed him for most of his three terms.

Paxton, a 60-year-old Republican, decried the impeachment proceedings as “political theater” that will “inflict lasting damage on the Texas House,” adding to his earlier claims that it’s an effort to disenfranchise the voters who returned him to office in November.

“I want to invite my fellow citizens and friends to peacefully come let their voices be heard at the Capitol tomorrow,” he said at a news conference, without taking any questions. “Exercise your right to petition your government.”

The request echoes former President Donald Trump’s call for people to protest his electoral defeat on Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob violently stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington. Paxton, who spoke at the rally that preceded that insurrection, called his supporters to the Texas Capitol on a day when the governor is supposed to deliver a Memorial Day address to lawmakers.

I think what has him scared is not the thought of impeachment, because he probably figures he has enough friends to bail his ass out in the end. It’s the danger of being suspended from office during the proceedings, allowing investigators to look things over without him there to interfere.

Perhaps, but this seems more like Paxton trying to make the case for why MAGAts should rush out to defend him from facing accountability. The idea that he’s a valuable ally and they can’t afford to lose him before next year.

I agree — obviously he wants the MAGAts on his side. As to what effect he had on the election, Trump won by nine percent, and it’s not entirely clear which party benefits from mail-in votes anyway.

Lee Strobel is an atheist-turned-wingnut Christian and former investigative law journalist at the Chicago Tribune. Since age twenty-nine he’s been a pastor in several wingnut churches. He is also a writer of Christian apologetics books.

Amongst other claims he’s made is you could prove the existence of Jesus in a court-of-law.

He holds an MSL from Yale and an honorary PhD in Christian Apologetics from Southern Evangelical Seminary.

Strobel is trying to break Henry Kissinger’s record for ageing douchecanoes.

He ignores such things as rising expenses versus stagnating wages, and other things which might cause people to consider delaying marriage and children (or not marrying or having children at all).

American conservatism these days is effectively a cargo cult, absolutely convinced that there is some long-lost idealized past that they can replicate if they just get everybody making the right noises and saying the right things. The idea that the past they desire to return to only existed due to factors that simply cannot be recreated is rejected outright because most are living in a constant haze of nostalgic bliss and the amnesia that robs us of all but the most pleasant details as we age.

AltEn is a former ethanol plant near Lincoln, Nebraska.

They purchased old corn seed to convert to ethanol. The law is clear that ethanol plants cannot use corn which is contaminated with pesticides, because the “wet cake” (waste) is stored outside before it’s picked up for other uses like livestock feed.

AltEn did it anyway.

After the Nebraska Examiner exposed what they were doing (which included contaminating the ground water and obstruction from the local government Republicans over jobs), the state swept in and seized the plant.

That left a problem of ten city blocks of wet cake to be disposed of.

The state hired Waste Management. That company says they’re going to try an experimental disposal method: Mix it with Portland cement, then wrap it in plastic to reduce fly ash as they transport it away, then send it to a landfill (so they can pollute the ground water there I guess).

Pleasant Point Landfill just outside Omaha (the state’s largest city) is the closest and is under consideration. Removal of the wet cake would require about twenty truckloads a day for six weeks.

Clean up of AltEn site enters new phase, waste could be headed to Omaha landfill (May 25, 2023, details at the Nebraska Examiner)

News Channel Nebraska Omaha runs up against a wall of circular arguments and blame-shifting from our billionaire swine farmer governor.

NCN’s Joe Jordan: Governor on the new 12-week abortion ban, can you guarantee that doctors who perform those so-called “contested abortions” will not be criminally prosecuted?

Gov. Jim Pillen: Yea, yea again you know it’s the far left trying to create nothing but fear in the conversation. We’ve had a 10- year bill at 20 weeks and there’s never one case. So, this bill is just about saving babies that are 12 weeks of age and more, has nothing to do with patient-doctor relationships. It’s just saving as many babies living in moms’ wombs.

NCN: Well, if no one’s going to be criminally prosecuted how does that prevent abortions from occurring?

Gov. Pillen: Twelve weeks. So, there’s got to be patient-doctor relationship if abortion takes place so again when that’s going to be the doctor’s privilege to make that decision with the mother.

NCN: So, could that doctor be criminally prosecuted if he violates whatever that rule is.

Gov. Pillen: Again, it’s been in law for 10 years and there’s never been a case.

NCN: I still don’t understand. If no one’s going to be criminally prosecuted why does 12 weeks make a difference?

Gov. Pillen: Because people, because women will not be able to get an abortion after 12 weeks.

NCN: What if they do?

Gov. Pillen: Well if there’s an abortion clinic that’ll be a problem, right.

NCN: So, there would be some criminal prosecution, potentially.

Gov. Pillen: If the doctor performing abortions, if a doctor makes the decision that it’s in the best interest of the mother to lose the baby that’s the patient-doctor relationship.

Well of course no abortion is necessary - that’s a given - because these laws have nothing to do with children or even abortion per se and everything to do with destroying the lives of women who dare to think they are free and independent sentient lifeforms with equal rights.

This is confusing to me, because as I understand it a veto would prevent a bill from becoming law, and an override would allow a bill to become law over the Governor’s veto, so how would preventing a veto override protect a hate bill?

Nope

Unless it’s born

There are babies who are twelve weeks of age, as you note, already born.

If you kill one, the crime is murder.

Heh. Dead quiet here. 10 arrivals & 14 stayovers out of 99 rooms.

Super Typhoon Mawar is still trucking WNW with winds of 135 knots.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, it will approach the northern Philippine Islands before making a sharp turn to the northeast. By the time it gets there it will have weakened to 100 knots, then weaken further to a tropical storm as it passes Hainan Island moving in the direction of Japan.

To safeguard their hate bills, the GOP in the Unicameral now wants to end the legislative session early, to prevent veto overrides.

In comes the conservative and Christian hate against Sen. Megan Hunt (I-District 8, West Omaha)

A motion to adjourn or end a legislative session cannot be debated under the rules of the Unicameral.

why would the gop want to “prevent veto overrides”? They’re presumably the ones who would be overriding the veto, yes?

Enough Republicans already voted against the anti-abortion bill to defeat it. The trans hate bill barely passed and there’s been massive protests at the capitol building, with several Republicans (including the one who only voted the way the governor told her to without even reading the news to find out this has been an issue across the country and the appellate court for our district has already enjoined such bills from other states) saying they would vote differently now.

I realized because I didn’t search quite explicitly enough that last May 26, the estimated losses for Russia were 29,600 soldiers. As of yesterday, they are estimated at nearly 206,000. That’s almost 175,000 casualties (which may include injured, though I’m guessing not a lot, because Russia seems to leave most of its injured on the battlefield to die) in the span of a year. Now one can argue that this isn’t that problematic: it’s a big country; they just burned through a lot of the wastage in prison camps, the “useless eaters” in various outlying regions. I’m guessing if they burn through another 200,000 this year, it’s going to start to include people that even Moscow and St. Petersburg residents may recognize.

Hey! Anyone want a Matt Walsh doll?

holybulliesandheadlessmonsters.blogspot.com

Anti-LGBTQ culture warrior (and James Bond villain wannabe) Matt Walsh wants to you to help his fight against the anti-LGBTQ community by buying a plush, infantilized version of himself.

This right here proves that all of this stuff coming from people like Matt Walsh about saving kids from “LGBTQ influence” is merely a money-making tactic. The attacks on trans healthcare, the boycott against Bud Light, and the present boycott against Target is all one big grift. It’s all about rage posting to monetize hate. It’s been successful for Walsh as he has devoted books, documentaries, and social media posts smearing our community as threats to kids and society at large.

Now he’s going into the baby doll business.

Speaking of the boycott against Target, one person being victimized by the social media right-wing campaign is now benefitting from it.

Erik Carnell is a trans designer whose merchandise was pulled at Target after people spread false stories about how it was Satanic and being marketed through kids by the store. Carnell, via his brand Abprallen, does have merchandise with has pentagrams and horned skulls. And some do reference Satan. But none of it is sold at Target.

However, this inconvenient fact was ignored by folks on social media, like all things which don’t fit their narrative. They at first spread the lie about how Target was marketing pro-trans swimwear to kids and when that was refuted, they are now claiming that the store is marketing Satanic material for Pride Month.

The lie led Target to remove Carnell’s items from their stores.

Target’s Pride collection included more than 2,000 products from clothes and music to home furnishings, and while several are under review the only ones removed so far from its website and stores are from Carnell’s brand Abprallen.
However, the sales of his overall merchandise have actually increased.

While support for his products from Target disappeared, the Abprallen store has seen an outpouring of support. According to the store’s Etsy message, Carnell has seen an “unprecedented number of orders” since the backlash began.

“Your support during this extremely difficult time means more than I can express,” Carnell posted after placing the shop on a temporary hiatus. “I am putting my shop on holiday mode and not accepting new orders until I catch up on the ones I currently have. Thank you so much for your understanding!”

It’s ironic how social media wannabees exploited Carnell to attack Target but now they are the ones being exploited. Not only is Carnell getting a lot of media attention because of their actions but he seems to also be getting many allies on Twitter. They are bombarding threads which attack him with links to where to buy his merchandise

Pastor charged with four counts of child cruelty announces bid for Louisiana House

John Raymond, a MAGA cultist and former “Survivor” contestant, says he wants to promote “conservative Christian principles” in office

open.substack.com

Just over a year ago, Pastor John Raymond, the head of Lakeside Christian School in Slidell, Louisiana, was arrested after he allegedly brought three students into his office to reprimand them for talking in class… then literally taped the kids’ mouths shut after wrapping the tape around their heads. The students stayed in that condition for 45 minutes, according to police, until other administrators, feeling very awkward about this punishment, cut the tape off.

Police said the students complained they had trouble breathing while their mouths were taped and that having the tape removed was painful.

Detectives presented their evidence to a judge Thursday morning and a few hours later Raymond turned himself in to police.

He was booked into the Slidell City Jail for three counts of cruelty to juveniles.

Raymond defended the decision in a public statement saying (1) he gave the students the option of using transparent Scotch tape instead, (2) he offered to call their parents and suspend the kids but they didn’t want that, and (3) he asked the kids if they were in pain and could breathe.

He couldn’t believe people were treating him like the bad guy.

“These students were given a choice between suspension and temporary tape. They were never in any physical pain. Their breathing was never impaired. The tape was never wrapped around their heads. And it was off in under 10 minutes. No student was ever treated with cruelty or harmed in any way,” he added.

You would think a guy who was the first person voted off the island when he competed on the TV show “Survivor” in 2002 (seriously!) would be a little more self-aware about how badly he comes across in social situations.

In fact, he’s so unlikeable that, in 2018 and 2019, when he ran for a seat in the Louisiana State House on a campaign of loving Donald Trump and hating gay people, even Republicans rejected him. Twice!

But it didn’t stop there.

Just a couple of months after he taped those kids’ mouths shut, Raymond was arrested again for—wait for it—child cruelty.

Slidell Police said the new allegations include Raymond holding a 4-year-old boy upside down by his ankles and “whipping his buttocks” and in a separate incident covering the same child’s mouth and nose with his hand to stop a “tantrum.”

In a press release, police said witnesses reported Raymond’s actions prevented the child from breathing “to the point of him going limp.” The witness, a staff member, said the child was “out of it and lethargic” and “unable to stand.”

By November, Raymond, who’s the pastor of New Horizon Church and the owner of a Christian radio station called “The Bridge,” was formally charged with the crimes. He pleaded not guilty. He’ll be appearing in court next week to set a trial date

And he’s running for the Louisiana State House again…

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum is expected to announce his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, two GOP operatives told The Associated Press on Friday, putting him in an already crowded field dominated by ex-President Donald Trump.

Doubt he has much in finances available except that he can probably do a bit of self-financing as he is a real billionaire (sold Great Plains Software to Microsoft). His bifocals have more personality than he does and the association with Bill Gates will not help. However, get some national exposure and maybe inroads to a different nice gig (ag or energy secretary if an R wins the presidency *shudder*). Normal pathway would be Senate but Senators Hoeven and Cramer aren’t going anywhere soon.

You may have read a little about it. In the summer of 2021, Lindell announced that he was going to hold a “Cyber Symposium” in Sioux Falls, S.D., to release data that proved that U.S. voting machines were hacked by China. He said he would even pay $5 million to anyone who could disprove his data.

Right away, friends started calling to ask me if I was planning to go. After all, I invented the field of software forensics, the science of analyzing software source code for intellectual property infringement or theft. Still, I wasn’t sure. There are a lot of experts that could analyze data. And no one in their right mind would offer $5 million if the data wasn’t real and verified, right? Anyway, the symposium ran three days — not nearly long enough to analyze and verify any data.

But I’m also a tournament poker player. I love a good challenge. And as the calls and emails kept coming in, I started to think, I should go, just to be there when history was made. I voted for Trump twice. If Lindell’s data was correct, maybe a presidential election would be overturned. I’d at least get to meet some really interesting people. So I flew to Sioux Falls.

Easily manipulated by the word “Patriot?” You get an expensive lesson.

In the recesses of the internet where some of Donald Trump’s most fervent supporters stoke conspiracies and plot his return to the White House, suspected con artists have been mining their disappointment over the last presidential election for gold.

They’ve been peddling “Trump Bucks,” which are emblazoned with photos of the former president, and advertising them online as a kind of golden ticket that will help propel Trump’s 2024 bid and make the “real patriots” who support him rich when cashed in.

John Amann told NBC News he bought $2,200 worth of Trump Bucks and other items over the past year only to discover they were worthless when he tried to cash them in at his local bank. So he’s gone on Twitter to warn other Trump supporters not to fall for this scam.

NBC News has identified the Colorado-based companies behind the Trump Bucks as Patriots Dynasty, Patriots Future and USA Patriots and reviewed dozens of social posts, online complaints and hundreds of misleading ads for the products. Additionally, NBC News has found at least a dozen people like Amann who say they invested thousands of dollars after watching the pitches on Telegram and other websites that strongly suggested that Trump himself was endorsing these products.

Worldometer clocks the US death toll at over 1.1 million people. It will forever ruin my respect for my fellow Americans that this is glossed over like it’s nothing.

9/11 caused a generational freakout when 3,000 Americans died in one day. But 3,000 Americans were dying every single day from this virus and the same conservatives who demanded a Forever War as a response to 9/11 literally laughed off these deaths. It was hilarious to them.

I no longer think America is a generally decent country. I think right wing media has poisoned the minds of almost half of us and there’s no saving them.

And “AI” helped with the scam.

“In AI-generated promotional videos shared on social media and in chat groups, celebrities and politicians, including Trump, appear to endorse the scam.

In one, Trump appears to announce the launch of the TRB system on Fox News.

“Let’s make America wealthy again,” the artificially generated voice of Trump says.

In another, Twitter-owner Elon Musk appears to say “That Trump certificate is not a joke, it’s real. Everyone needs to get as many as they can. I spend one million dollars on Trump certificates and this week I’m going to cash out my Trump items. Soon I will be the richest person on the planet again.”

The most shocking thing about that fraud was that he was bilking people for $25k a pop. He was supposed to have $10 billion, so why the hell was he scamming people for something that ought to be less than he could find in his couch cushions?

So in light of that, why would $2k in fake “Trump Bucks” be out of bounds for the guy? Manhattan DA’s discovery list cites book accusing Trump of fathering another child

Oh my…

Lost in the news that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s discovery list turned over to Donald Trump’s lawyers contains a reference to an audio tape of a witness speaking with the former president, is a list of books the investigators appear to be relying upon — and MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin noted one curious inclusion.

As part of “automatic discovery” Bragg’s office turned over the information related to Trump’s arrest and subsequent 34-count indictment over allegations he falsified business documents while trying to conceal a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

CBS reported, “some information, labeled ‘Limited Dissemination Materials’ by prosecutors, will only be available to Trump in the presence of his attorneys.”

Reviewing the list, MSNBC’s Rubin highlighted the fact that the books containing statements about the former president and his life before and during his presidency were included and one leaped out at her.

As she tweeted, “In New York state, a defendant is entitled to receive all witness testimony before the grand jury and any and all other witness statements provided to the relevant prosecutor’s office. But here, the Manhattan DA’s office also attached this two-page list of books,” before adding, “Why? Because these books themselves may contain relevant witness statements. And it is quite a collection. Yes, it includes journalistic hits like those written by Maggie Haberman, Bob Woodward, Jon Karl, and

@KatyTurNBC, whose book on the 2016 campaign is listed.”

Notable, she pointed out, was a book by Dino Sajudin, who once worked as a Trump World Tower doorman.

“But what really popped for me was a book by Dino Sajudin, a onetime Trump World Tower doorman who was paid by the National Enquirer’s parent company, American Media, for his story that Trump had a child out of wedlock with a concierge at that building,” she wrote before asking, “As the New York Post notes here, Sajudin’s account has been vigorously denied by the woman in question. So is it on the list to show that AMI had a habit of catching and killing stories damaging to Trump? Or for other reasons?”

hmmmm

Reminder—Boris and Natasha said NO!

I did some looking and reconciliation could have been used but there are a couple of wrinkles. One, as pointed out, ALL the Senate Democrats would have to agree and Manchin was not on board. But also, there are some procedural problems.

Instead of the current approaches where the debt ceiling is moved to specific date, for reconciliation the Dems would have to give a specific AMOUNT. While this kind of makes knowing when the next debt ceiling vote would take place, it also means every Dem would see that “spending” used against them

It is hard enough to get people to understand the debt ceiling when they just use a date. Imagine how it would be with the GOP spouting “Thise Dems are forcing the government to spend trillions.” So I can understand their reluctance. Even if they could get Manchin.
