Well, my best friend is still in the care facility. I do not think he will ever walk again but I am hopeful (As anyone reading me, I am an optimist.) I’ve now got POA for his health and financial decisions. Having to deal with Medicaid so I expect the next week will see me traveling to his bank to get account statements. The bank only has 18 months worth online. Gonna be fun.

Facebook has allowed editing of posts *for years.* I mean, probably 0.7% of all tweets ever tweeted had the words “edit button” in them.

Well, I think McCarthy has sold his soul again. His House MEGA base is going to be pi$$ed at this deal and will want to kick his ass out of the Speakership. To stay in “power” he will have to depend on the D’s to save is ass. Then the D’s will want to travel down a different path and McCarthy will be forced to drive.

McCarthy gets to hold the gavel and play Speaker until January, 2025 (if he can survive a motion to vacate the chair that is sure to be coming now). It’s an important post that brings perks and is second in line to the presidency. The House won’t accomplish anything during his Speakership, but by Dog, he will go down in history as having been Speaker.

Having a Federal judge incandescent at one is not a good career move.

Judge Castel said in an order that he had been presented with “an unprecedented circumstance,” a legal submission replete with “bogus judicial decisions, with bogus quotes and bogus internal citations.” He ordered a hearing for June 8 to discuss potential sanctions.

But on social media and in promotional videos — many featuring faked celebrity endorsements — the sellers have tapped an audience that believes Trump’s ouster was part of a great conspiracy and that by investing in the Trump Rebate Banking System, or TRB for short, Trump will reward their loyalty by making them rich.

Those who buy these items, the ads from Patriots Dynasty, Patriots Future and USA Patriots suggest, will be rewarded when Trump unveils a new monetary system that will turn these products into legal tender worth far more than the purchase price.

Dude can’t even make HIMSELF rich.

Iirc, in the 1980s Reagan was trying to roll back the New Deal.

Then in the 1990’s Gingrich one-upped him and wanted to roll back taxation to before the creation of the IRS and Federal income taxes. And return to having the states collect taxes. It sounds like this is part of the same goal.

Okay, back from some friends’ gig (including John Burnett, late of NPR, a dynamite Harmonica player).

So to continue a conversation started a few threads back:

I was pretty surprised by the vote today. I really thought they would give Paxton a delay to talk to an open session, so the sheer magnitude of the loss (121 for adoption, 23 against with a total of 5 either absent or present/not voting was a big surprise. A really BIG surprise, which indicates a couple of things:

1) Pretty much everyone thinks that Paxton is A) a serious douche-canoe (he always has been); and B) had no real deeply felt support within the House; and

2) Somebody with a lot of suction and stroke called the Speaker and told him to tell the R’s to vote their conscience. Oh, and told the Speaker to, under no circumstances, allow anyone to whip the R’s to try to increase Paxton’s vote to avoid the unmitigated disaster of losing by 98 votes.

It could have been Abbot, he’s pretty popular. It could have Patrick, who’s got a big stick and is feared, especially in the Senate, where as Lite Guv he Chairs the body and sets the Legislative Agenda. (NB: The Lite Guv has a LOT more Legislative mooshka than Abbot. Abbot appoints Boards and Commissions and signs bills.)

Or it could have been forces outside of trad gov’t, working through either Abbot or Patrick because they knew Paxton was a dead man walking, politically. In other words, Oligarchs.

And I’m saying it’s not a safe assumption she’s going to perform being “scorned” in any public forum, or even feel “scorned” on a personal level.

I’ve lived in a blood red state for thirty years and…the gender dynamics are far more fucked up than anyone would imagine, and not even in ways that match what one would model looking at what social conservatives say they value. Lots of women of status know that they’re husbands are creeps/cheaters but it’s just seen as inevitable, as inherently male behavior…if there’s anger, it’s directly towards the female subject even if that’s an assault victim or a teenager.

Furthermore…this is a seasoned politician in a corrupt state who’s married to another corrupt politician; odds are good she’s complicit in every bit of this shit to a degree where womanly wrath doesn’t tilt the scale compared to the deeply-entwined complicity.

Yeah, best info I can find says that the windows of “The Beast” are rated to a .44 Mag round, though I suspect the real specs are probably higher than that. But even if you assume that that’s the actual spec, then that’s equiv to LV 3 bulletproof glass which is between 7 and 20lb/sq. ft depending upon whether it’s laminated glass or polycarb. By contrast, the LV 10 that’s rated for a single .50 BMG shot at close range is made of aluminum oxynitrate and is over 30 lb/sq. ft. Now even the doors on the uparmored Humvees used in the past 2 wars were rated for that, let alone the doors on the Cybertruck.

The Trumps are getting sued again, this time by their own tenants.

(The Messenger, yesterday)

Eric Trump Accused of Secret Deal to Charge Condo Owners $1.75 Million

Eric Trump and the board of a Trump Organization condo building are accused of striking a secret deal to charge unit owners $1.75 million to renovate a vacant bar and turn it into an “amenity space,” according to a new lawsuit.

Condo owner Johanna Beiter claims in the Manhattan Supreme Court suit the Trump World Tower board informed residents in February that the 2,500-square-foot commercial space in the building would be converted into the amenity space for residents of the building—at condo owners’ expense.

The suit alleges the conversion work was approved by both Eric Trump and Trump Organization Assistant General Counsel Sonja Talesnik—and both allegedly have financial interests in the project.

When Sir John of Orange tried this back in 2011, he at least got close to a deal that would have involved real budgetary cuts and restrictions in exchange for agreements to increase tax revenues to match. But the TPers threatened to run him out of office so he backed out of the negotiations and instead we got the Sequestration agreement that ultimately pleased nobody and led to both sides running the following year on overturning.

I’m curious how McCarthy and his puppeteers are gonna try to sell this as a “win” for their side.

Yup!

I wonder how thick and how heavy that company’s glass would have to be. And whether it would survive much else beyond a single shot.

The current presidential limousine weights 15,000 to 20,000 lbs has 5” think glass and 8” thick armor. The effectiveness of that armor against ‘what’ has not, to my knowledge, been released.

In return, McCarthy got the performative adrenaline rush and kayfabe that the MAGAts require. It had to look hard and brutal or the MAGAts would have been disappointed and claimed that McCarthy had not fought hard enough.

Yep. Expect the usual suspects to dispute that such a vote counts as “bipartisan” by claiming that any Repub who helped the bill pass is a “RINO” who is a Dem in all but party affiliation and so this bill (and all the implied negative consequences) are solely the responsibility of the Dems.

A not inconsiderable percentage of the people that Ronny is trying to appeal to genuinely believe that having a standing army goes against the wishes of the Founders and that we should go back to the system of every state maintaining their own militias that may only be called up in time of war. A method that worked so well…that it was utterly abandoned within a generation of the Constitution’s signing and the US Army established as a permanent institution.

On top of that Christian subculture, especially Evangelical/Charismatic culture, encourages the wife who is wronged to forgive her husband as Jesus forgives him. In such churches, a divorce is a scandal on the congregation and they can put unbelievable pressure on a woman not to rock the boat. (That’s also why there are so many child sexual assaults that get covered up in Evangelical churches.)

Being a politician in such a church brings more scrutiny on that church. Her inculcation by her church will likely force her into a good Stepford Wife roll.

On top of that, Gov. Mark Gordon (R-Wyo.) signed a first-in-the-nation law to completely ban any pill which can be used for an abortion.

The Wyoming courts which enjoined the abortion ban as unconstitutional will likely enjoin this bill for the same reason.

Earlier this year, a not-for-profit group attempted to open an abortion clinic in Casper, but were firebombed out-of-business. Unsurprisingly, the Casper Police can’t seem to find who did it.

They were one of two groups who sued to overturn the abortion ban.

While in the past Pro-Death groups sought publicity for destroying abortion clinics or murdering personnel, they’ve learnt it’s easier to stay out of jail if you don’t claim responsibility for terrorism.

And that’s been a source of some of the biggest gripes among long-time fans, that the people in overall charge of the franchise are obviously not fans or at best casual fans who know the major beats but don’t have a real love for any of it. It’s sort of the same complaint that a lot of our brethren over in the Star Wars community have been making in the wake of the new trilogy, that the people running things love the money being made but couldn’t care less for how they’re going about it.

I’d say Prodigy only edges out Lower Decks because the latter had issues in its first season of wanting to be “Star Trek meets Rick & Morty.” Strange New Worlds is next on the list because it’s almost pure fan-wank but doing it in a respectful manner, followed by Picard which only avoided being at the bottom because of its third season. And the bottom rung on the ladder goes totally to Discovery whose sins can largely be summed up with two words: Michael Burnham.

I actually liked Picard’s first season best because they tried to do something different. Failed, mostly, but it was interesting. Discovery started to find itself only after the time skip. Rather like Enterprise it took too long to get its feet under it through and, yes, it is at the bottom of the pile. I am cautiously optimistic for the SNW/LD crossover…

“Remember, a “moderate” Republican is defined as a Republican who only condones, rather than supports, a violent coup to overthrow democracy, and would rather overthrow democracy through voter suppression. Republicans who actively oppose coup attempts, such as Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, get drummed out of the party.

I just witnessed a perfect example of why I feel we as a species are doomed. At 4:40am, I had a fellow walk into the lobby to ask if we had any bottled water. As we’re still waiting on our shipment at this time the answer was “No.” Instead of simply asking for a couple of cups or glasses to take back to his room to use the free tap water in his room, he grabs a couple of cans of soda that ring up to just under $4 when taxes are included. He then asks me for cups…to fill in the water dispenser in the gym. The damn things doesn’t even chill water, it just dispenses the exact same tap water at the exact same temp but does so in a gym. But the crowning moment was when was walking out, I asked if he knew that there was a gas station right across the way that sold bottled water and other items. He just gives me a dumb-founded look and asks “They’re open twenty-four hours?”

Yep. The Wawa across the street from us is prominent, I mean no matter which direction you take to get to us you still end up passing it. It’s brightly lit at all hours and there’s cars there no matter what time of day you stop by. Yet people still will tromp their gormless asses down here and grab overpriced bottles of water or bite-sized bags of Doritos than take a walk that’s less than five minutes to buy hot food and fountain drinks for cheaper prices.

It’s bound to happen, because everything they do is instrumental and not out of any principles. The only principles they have is that Their Kind should control everything and Others should suffer. So, whatever bullshit they generate about states’ rights or bodily autonomy or whatever it is goes out the window the minute circumstances threaten their real principles.

Situations like this happen when they actually did something durable about the last moral panic and challenge to their authority, and now they’ve made a 180 for the current panic and oops.

I agree, but I believe there are enough true believers that McCarthy would not be able to get this deal passed in the House and we would default on the debt if Democrats didn’t vote for it. It only takes five GOP defectors to deny McCarthy a majority.

It could only have been better if McCarthy had completely caved and the House passed a clean debt ceiling increase, and I had no hope of that happening. That might have been possible through the discharge petition, but those take so long we would’ve defaulted before it passed, triggering a deep recession. I will give McCarthy credit that he isn’t a nihilist who was willing to burn the country to the ground to retain the favor of the fascist caucus, because he barely got anything in this deal.

Way I see it, we got about the best deal we could manage in getting Qevin to agree to take the debt ceiling off the table until 2025. The original GQP position was that we do all of this again next spring, prolonging the misery with the knowledge while also making the budget fight this fall all the more vital. Without that deadline looming over the horizon, the inevitable threats of a government shutdown this fall have lost pretty much all of their menace.

Many of us, including myself, were urging President Biden to refuse to negotiate at all with McCarthy and take unilateral action such as invoking the 14th Amendment or minting trillion dollar coins. But that isn’t the Biden way. The Biden way is to compromise and get a bipartisan deal, and in retrospect this is better for the country than the turmoil, bitterness and uncertainty that could’ve tanked the economy if he had taken a partisan, unilateral approach. I tip my cap to him; Joe Biden may well be the best President we could’ve had for this moment in history, hot on the heels of the worst President ever. I just wish more Americans appreciated what a remarkable job he has done, but with Fox News dedicated to defaming him and legacy media committed to “both sides” journalism, he is doomed to being underappreciated in his time; history, I think, will be much kinder.

I understand the sentiment…but we really need to rip off the band-aid. Yeah, it will be unpleasant. Yeah, it will lead to a lot of anger. Yeah, it might even cause us some political heartache in the short-term. But in the long-term, continuing to preserve the debt ceiling is only really benefiting one party. Either it needs to be a party plank next year that the damned thing is forever abolished or we need to roll the dice on the courts abolishing it. I am hopeful that President Biden is giving MAGA enough rope to hang themselves. I was one of those who ridiculed candidate Biden’s statements that he still believed in bipartisanship, but by dog he has made it work to the extent possible. Obviously the debt ceiling serves no legitimate purpose and should go, but risking a default now could’ve caused untold human suffering as millions of Americans were thrown out of work, not to mention triggering a global recession. It definitely needs to go on the “to do” list should the Democrats regain complete control of the federal government in 2025, but it’s already such a long list that abolishing the debt ceiling is one of those things they are unlikely to get to.

And how do we adequately convey that danger to voters? A natural disaster is easy, you just show folks the damage done by past disasters and tell them they need to take it seriously. Recessions are also serious but they move so slow by comparison that you rarely can convince people one is coming until it’s already happening. But a debt default? America’s never defaulted on its debt and there’s no real way to convey to the average voter just how serious it would be if such a thing happened. And so long as that remains the reality, we’re going to keep running around with our hair on fire about how the economy’s about to get fucked six ways to Sunday while the GQP sits to the side going “Yeah, it is, so what are you going to give us so that don’t happen?”

Abolishing the debt ceiling is on a long list of things that should happen but probably won’t. Included on this list is first, reform the filibuster, to make it possible to: grant statehood to D.C. and Puerto Rico, reform the Supreme Court, pass a new voting rights act which makes partisan gerrymandering illegal, expand the House of Representatives, reform immigration law, restore reproductive freedom, protect wetlands, enact Medicare for all, raise the minimum wage and mandate paid parental and sick leave, etc. If the Democrats regain control of the federal government in 2025, they would be lucky to address one or two of these pressing problems before losing control of the House in the 2026 midterms, in part because they probably still won’t be able to round up 50 votes to reform the filibuster.

That this is preferable, to Qevin’s mind, to sending the country into a tailspin by defaulting on our debt is telling. Specifically, it’s telling that while Qevin is just as despicable as any Republican, he’s no fool, and he realizes that letting the crazies have their way is worse than any damage to his political career by putting his back up when it matters.

This 1000 times. Biden is getting a lot of progressive things done but he is acting as the President of All Americans not just one side. We are transitioning to a new political party system. The Presidents during each transition historicaly have been are, not too surprisingly, ones well remembered. Washington/Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy, and FDR in a positive fashion. Jackson and Reagan in a negative (I expect history to be re-evaluating Reagan in the next decades). Biden is exactly who we need now. When we are done with this transition and have a new political party system in place, Biden will be seen as one of the greats. We wll have to add space on Mt. Rushmore for FDR and him.

A single .50 cal round from less than 10 feet away would have absolutely NO problem penetrating into the Tesla and then exiting out the other side of a Tesla. Let alone 10’s of rounds.

Was that even a .50 cal in the video? Looks by scale more like a Browning M1919 which is a .30 cal. A bit less penetrating power.

Championship ends with two runs scoring on a dropped strike three while the other team is celebrating thinking they won.

Brutal

— Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) May 27, 2023

Idiot catcher. He dropped the third strike. Batter is entitled to run to first unless tagged by the catcher. Who failed to do that as he celebrated. Good on the base runners to keep going.

But every catcher I have even known realized the consequences of a dropped third strike. And would have nightmares about dropping it in an imporant situation then overrthowing the 1st baseman.

This is worse. As a former catcher, I am flabbergasted.

We could have a whole set of such coins, “1-6er FAFO,” “Abolition of the Electoral College,” “Putin’s ICC Trial” etc.

My question is you do not see the runner on first advancing for quite a while. I wonder if his first reaction was to head toward the dugout, then he was told to run. The video can’t capture it but it must have been close for a moment to having the batter pass the runner, which would have been the third out prior to the tying run scoring.

That rule was changed a few years ago in the NFL. If a punt goes into the end zone now, it is a touchback. Something you can still see: Punting team touches the ball but it is still rolling. Receiving team grabs the ball and advances it. Even if the returner loses a fumble his team keeps the ball back where the illegal touching by the kicking team occurred.

The crazy thing here is we have ample evidence that the cries of “fraud” were a pre-planned strategy. Trump, Giuliani, Bannon, etc, all telegraphed this lie ahead of time. First with accusations of problems with mail-in voting before any voting had started, then resignations when he demanded that his DOJ immediately declare the election tainted, to his own campaign leaders testifying under oath that he lost cleanly. And yet these people actually believe Trump thinks he won? He knows he lost, but he also knows that the rubes will keep funding his debts as long as he keeps up this fraud.

The grocery store that I generally shop at, has a vending machine stocked with it. I’ll take a pic when I go up there in a bit and post it.

That’s wild. I remember Shasta Cola from the 1970s and ’80s, but had idea they were even still in business. I figured they would’ve been swallowed up by one of the other cola megacorporations.

re: #181 No Malarkey!

If Biden had taken an alternative approach (with all its uncertainties), he still would have had to negotiate a budget deal and the budget he got was the best possible given the opposition. So 2 problems solved at once IF this gets through the House.

I covered local sports for nearly 30 years. Just when you think you have seen everything. My favorite was a flyout to right, throw home to get the runner tagging from third, then a throw to second to get the runner tagging from first. Just a routine F-9-2-6 triple play.

I was there at Dodgers Stadium where Larry Walker mistakenly tossed a foul ball to a fan and allowed a run to score.

Larry Walker FORGETS the number of outs!

And getting the Republicans to forfeit their election year election year ace - no budget fight to suck the oxygen out of the air on TV. I don’t think that has quite sunk in yet for them.

As for spending increases, there could be situations in the next year where money not budgeted needs to be found - tornados, hurricanes, fires - that money will always be available and the GOP won’t be able to say, “Well we need an offset…can we cut grandma to one meal a day?”

CHEYENNE - No damage had been reported to the local office of the National Weather Service as of 6:30 p.m. after multiple tornado warnings were issued throughout the late afternoon and early evening hours.

Shelby Fuller, an NWS meteorologist in Cheyenne, told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that they were still gathering information, as well as issuing additional severe thunderstorm warnings as the slow-moving storm continued to slide east toward Pine Bluffs and into Nebraska.

When I was a kid I remember that Coke came in 6 ox bottles and Pepsi came in 8 ounce bottles and RC came in 9 ounce bottles. All were a dime. So the dime went into the machine for RC since it had more soda.

First, Jayapal is a her ;-) Second, she is happy that spending is not being cut and amazed the Republicans put everyone through this for so little in return. Third, what I heard her say was that the White House should be worried about what the Progressive caucus thinks. She said they do not really know enough yet to oppose it and that the details of the work requirements will be critical for their support, So, a political maybe.

If she whips her caucus against it, Biden will have made a huge error. I do not think he would have made such a big one. Not over something which can be changed when the Dems take the House in 18 months. I think it likely she allows her caucus to vote their conscience. I do not think Biden made this deal without keeping Jayapal in the loop. That would be a huge mistake and he does not usually make those. He knows they are critical. What I heard her say was not that the caucus was against it and would vote that way. Just that the White House should be worried. That the exact details of the work requirements, for example, would matter. I believe she is playing the role that others have suggested - if the progressives are reluctant, it must be a good deal. I expect she will not whip the caucus against it but will not whip for it. Let them vote heir conscience. She knows how important the 2024 elections are and knows that getting the debt ceiling off the table until 2025 helps that.

Hope I am right. She knows Biden has been thebest thing for Progressives so I expect her to help him stay in power.

• $2.2 million for legislative branch salary increases; and
• $7 million to the state Department of Environment and Energy for grants to support a rural drinking water project in Cedar and Knox counties.
• $40 million for the Rural Workforce Housing Investment Fund (this is for low-income housing in rural areas)
• $20 million from the Shovel Ready Capital Recovery and Investment Act;
• $10 million to the Site and Building Development Fund for a ground-based nuclear deterrence project near Kimball; and
• $10 million from the Nebraska Health Care Cash Fund for a pilot program on PTSD related to gun violence

I’m not seeing anything here that actually helps Nebraskans.
