Like Honey: Rachael & Vilray, “Even in the Evenin’”

Music • Views: 15,326

I remember when
Five bells would toll and work would end,
He and I would meet out on the square.
There wasn’t anybody anywhere
Could keep my love from being there.

Rachael & Vilray perform “Even in the Evenin’” from the album ‘I Love a Love Song!,’ out now on Nonesuch Records: rachaelandvilray.lnk.to

EVEN IN THE EVENIN’

I remember when
Five bells would toll and work would end,
He and I would meet out on the square.
There wasn’t anybody anywhere
Could keep my love from being there.
Now even in the evenin’,
He can’t find the time.
Those hours once were mine,
From five to nine.

Days are when the race is run,
And my baby wins,
But he’s been cuttin’ in
On my evenin’s.

“Sorry darling can’t do like we planned,
The man is really ridin’ me.
Confide in me:
Do you think that I’ve been working too hard?”

Just a broken date or two,
Things ain’t so grim.
I guess I’ll see him
Some evenin’.

Ambition is nice,
But you pay a price,
And wrath is a sin,
But I’ll get even
In the evenin’.

I used to wonder what would happen if a major site on the Internet evaporated in a puff of entropy. Bugs. That’s what happens.

True!

There is so much innovative and interesting teaching/learning material coming out. Not only about physics, but also about so many other subjects.

And my interests far exceed any time and focus I could ever possibly have. A very sad reminder of human finitude.

If you go here, this is one person’s guide to learning physics: susanrigetti.com. The top of it has some good books to read to just get you excited but not in the math. I’m currently reading Black Holes & Time Warps, which is about general relativity. Even in the prolog, I finally understand the tides. If you go up into the menu, she has a guide for math, which some similar books.

I have decided to pursue the physics one, with a few modifications. I figure it’s worth the pursuit even if I don’t finish. It’ll be my hobby.

People I’ve shown Bluesky’s web app have almost universally been like “yeah, I know how to work that.” The similarity of the Twitter-like interface is a powerful persuader, especially if they tried Mastodon and were bummed out by the differences. Which was a lot of ‘em.

Thanks for the link! I’ll check it out shortly.

Your choice is the best kind of hobby! A lifelong study of the mysteries of the Universe. With a new discovery always around the next corner.

Some years back I listened to a series of lectures by a Caltech researcher on the theoretical concept of “Time”. He went through the history of theories about what Time was. And then concluded that Entropy was the current best candidate. But that not much was definitively known yet.

A few weeks later I was at a gathering of friends. Their son-in-law has a PhD in Physics. (Not sure what flavor, though.) As a conversation starter, I mentioned the listening to lectures and Entropy. And then watched to see his reaction.

He paused, got a far away look and finally said “That’s what they are saying.” Then silence. After that, we had a much better discussion on baby goats though.

Scratch that as dinner party conversation topic, though…

The Democratic Party has already declared there wouldn’t be debates or a primary for the President, and for good reason. It is long-standing tradition that the President is the de facto head of their party, and by that same tradition, they are the nominee unless they decide otherwise.

Y’all were talking about “speaking in tongues” aka “glossolalia” and Vicious Babushka gave her husband’s idea of how it started. Oddly enough, at least according to the earliest documents, that’s kind of what happened. Y’all can go look it up, it’s in the book of Acts, chapter 2. Instead of a bunch of guys studying in a synagogue in different languages, it was a bunch of guys praying in an upstairs room, when they claim the Holy Spirit came upon them and they began to speak in other languages. Oh, and those languages were understandable to the people around them.

Well, fast forward about 2,000 years and there are a lot of people who have spoken in tongues, and there are occasional rumors that people are speaking in known languages (that they themselves do not know) when under the influence of the Holy Spirit. But nothing is proven. In fact, linguists have looked into glossolalia and determined it’s not language. It has some elements of language but the phonemes used appear to be based on the languages the speakers know. It doesn’t have an internal structure that marks it as language. The Wikipedia article gives some background: en.wikipedia.org

Now, I am aware that there are a lot of conservative non-Pentecostal, non-Charismatic Evangelicals who believe glossolalia is straight from the devil. That’s because of their belief that the “spiritual gifts” (not just speaking in tongues) mentioned in various places in the Christian scriptures died out with the apostles. This is very much a *belief* and not a fact. I can point these guys to (for example) the Acts of Perpetua and Felicitas (circa 203) , which contains what is likely the first account by a Christian woman of her faith. While Perpetua didn’t recount that she was speaking in tongues, she was revered as a prophet by those within her tiny group because of her dreams.

The tl;dr is that VB’s Zedushka is probably more right than he knows about the origins of glossolalia, that it’s not language and that even some Christians think it’s satanic, even though it and other “spiritual gifts” have been practiced from the very beginning. This is just an example of what happens you look into what Christians have believed over the last 2,000 years. You realize that what’s called “orthodoxy” today is just one of many ways people have believed over the centuries.

House GOP Expects Floor Fight Over Defense Spending

Some of the possible amendments - prevent womenin the military from getting an abortion, no matter what state they are stationed in; prevent CRT from being taught; remove diversity initiatives; getting rid of Navy Digital Ambassador Program because it sponsored a drag event; remove contracts for EV.

Yeah, those all deal with making our military a better fighting force. The Senate is working on a bill that looks normal. So more fireworks with that.

Watching it, I was thinking that if I had teachers like the folks who created that video, I might have gone into physics instead of detesting it.

As others have already noted, it is not too late to learn!

Still, the real pedagogical problem remains: mathematics.

That tends to be the hurdle over which the jump is painful.

There are many fields of science in which the adult learner can become quite proficient, without a great deal of mathematics.

Such as geology (which is popular with older adults.)

Or areas of biology, like paleontology or evolution.

Alas, physics is bound forever to the development of mathematics.

One can, on the other hand, become quite well read, and even become degreed, in the history of science and of physics in particular.

What drives me up the wall is not that RFK Jrs making a lot of noise about debates, that’s to be expected when you’re a huckster whose business model is wasting other people’s time insisting if they’d just hear you out then you’d see (and agree with) their point of view.

It’s the damned Beltway press who are going “Well, Biden ought to debate him because that’s ‘tradition.’” Except, you know, the GQP came out in 2020 and announced that there’d be no primaries and everybody was to pledge loyalty to Orange Julius…and the same press yawned and treated it like a non-event.

Most physics lectures on Youtube are pretty bad, as far as videos go.

Walter Lewin was probably the best lecturer as far as intro physics on Youtube, but MIT removed his videos after his little scandal. But some of the videos can be found on his own channel. Here’s the first video in his intro to E&M course:

8.02x - Introduction

..

There’s a series of E&M courses by Robert de Mello Koch that some people really like. I’ve only watched the first half of the first video, to get a feel for his teaching style:

Electromagnetism - LECTURE 01 Part 01/01 - by Prof Robert de Mello Koch

.

Leonard Susskind is excellent but his various series on physics are not for beginners. And Stanford doesn’t organize his videos as they ought. However, there are Youtubers who have created lists to put the Susskind videos in order. Here, for example, is Susskind’s lectures on physics arranged in such an order, starting with the first one:

Lecture 1 | Modern Physics: Classical Mechanics (Stanford)

..

Note that Susskind has a couple of versions of his lectures as he repeated a couple of them, some years apart. The early ones are not so good as far as video, the latter ones are better, but I think the above list uses the older lectures.

Stanford does organize the later version of the classical mechanics lectures (taken four years after the older version above), into a convenient playlist:

Classical Mechanics | Lecture 1

..

I recommend starting with that video to see if you like the Susskind style.

As for the math issue: the online learning websites that are often pushed on Youtube, by our favorite Youtubers, have courses in pre-Calc and calculus.

I’m glad you found the article of interest. I did as well.

As you point out, there were probably a bunch or reasons for their inaction.

Applebaum points out that Putin’s Russia has worked hard to suppress people by ensuring there is such a firehouse of lies that nobody can determine what is the truth.

And as you point out, a situation moving faster than information can get out, decisions made, and orders sent is another reason. This is a very effective military technique. “Cause events to happen faster than an organization can respond.”

Additional reasons might include:
- The antagonists were in Putin’s top inner circle. So no prole is likely to have any idea what is going on there.
- The power of the antagonists and their lack of scruples significantly reduces any benefits to picking a side. Even if, in the end, one guesses correctly.
- There is no benefit because there really isn’t any reward for being right.

What fascinated me is how closely GOP efforts to suppress people follow similar tactics to those used by Putin:

- Firehose conspiracy theories so it is hard to tell what is the truth.
- Suppress ability of independent media to function effectively

Use threats of state power, lawfare, and private threats of violence to
- Suppress voting
- Suppress opposition to their policies.

they do adore their “horse race” narratives and and I’ve taken it in stride because I know that for the vast majority in the broadcast media realm, either the interviewers or their producers are bad faith actors. Never ask the difficult questions and what answers they do get, they seem to be completely incapable of following any answer with a related follow up question. Come to the appreciation that many reporters are likely less informed or as well read as passionate blog readers.

I assume that the Biden people are well aware of who is trying to make RFK Jr a thing and while the media will play footsie with it because it is easier than doing actual work.
The allure is strong to promote his candidacy because it’s ready made “both sides” content that they can regurgitate without any due dilligence.

You could really condense a lot of it down to one word: Money. Prigozhin was happy to send his men to fight and die in Ukraine when he was getting paid to do so, but as soon as the political fighting began over who got credit for the “win” in Bakhmut and especially when Shoigu began threatening Prigozhin’s money flow by seizing control over Wagner, it was only a matter of time before somebody’s head ended up on a platter.

What?

Hot Wheels didn’t realize that his anti-drag show bill could shut down the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders?????

I’m shocked, I tell you! Shocked!

Texas GOP tried to write anti-drag law so it wouldn’t be unconstitutional — but Abbott just messed it up

— Matthew Segal (@segalmr) June 26, 2023

The bill targeted “sexually explicit performances in front of children.” It doesn’t mention drag queens, which made some wonder if the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders were about to be shut down.

Political consultant Luke Macias, who supports the bill, spoke out at a hearing before the bill was passed through committee. State Rep. Chris Turner (D-Grand Prairie) asked if the law would apply to NFL cheerleaders, the Fort-Worth Star Telegram reported at the time.

“Maybe,” Macias said. ”Worst scenario is we have a few less cheerleaders in Texas for a year and a half.”

But wait…there’s more!

He was then asked about taking kids to the movies.

“If this bill actually extends to rated R-movies in theaters, I think that would be a huge blessing,” Macias said. “I hope it does.”

And more…

Turner also asked Macias about children at dance competitions who dance suggestively.

“The less twerking children are doing, the better off Texas would be as a society,” Macias said. “All it does is say nobody, no matter how you’re dressed, can get up and perform in a sexual manner, a prurient manner in front of a child.”

Now that it’s in place, there are questions about servers at Hooters too.

In an article, it mentions he drives from his house in Malibu to the Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach to work out 4 times a week. But even with that, most 69 year old men cannot build up that amount of muscle mass. My guess is he is using Testosterone Replace Therapy but who knows. But he is a grifter so HGH is not out of the possibility.

It’s become a practice in TX to write such laws as vaguely as possible so that lawyers and prosecutors can then spin them however they like to go after the people that the TX GQP want to oppress. See also anti-abortion laws that are written so vague that hospital lawyers went to court to fight to keep a pregnant woman’s corpse on life-support because the only determining factor on when it was okay to pull the plug was if the fetus was “viable.”

Testosterone Replacement therapy is not enough to build muscles that body-builders want. Too little and wrong form.

RFK is probably juicing, both Test and HGH.

And that is a STUPID COMBINATION for someone his age

You already see he has neurological damage based on his speech patterns. He’s too stupid to realize he’s playing with dynamite. You already see his delusional behavior which is prevalent with steroid junkies. He’s burning the candle and both ends and an enlarged heart, liver tumors and tendon fluid retention are coming down the track to really fuck him up.

Standing up and declaring “My opinion is equal or better to your science unless you can prove me wrong!” is roughly equivalent to a roid junkie going down to the beach and declaring “I’m the strongest guy in this city unless somebody can prove otherwise!” You may fool the idiots in the crowd who watch you lift weights that they never could and get plenty of asswipes who think they look “cool” standing next to you to go around saying you’ve gotta be the strongest because nobody will offer to fight you on it. But at the end of the day, you’re still wasting shit-tons of money to shrink your testicles and grow a new set of breasts. Just because the idiots can be convinced that your new A cups are just more “muscle” doesn’t make it so.

Sadly, there’s no “debate” equivalent of the small guy with mastery in martial arts who can just walk up to the muscle-brained moron and end the “debate” by laying him out with a single punch.

This is the sort of shit that happens when you get constantly bombarded by half-assed and even full-assed media coverage of scientific breakthroughs and discoveries that play up the sensationalist angle while omitting or simplifying the details so the plebes don’t turn away in confusion. Yes, science has found that a variety of things that we can encounter in our lives can alter our very DNA, some good and some bad, but getting plastic surgery is not on that list. And even if it were, there’s no known way in medical science to alter the very DNA of your ovum to match the changes made to your body through surgery.

Seriously, does this woman also think if she dyes her hair neon blue, there’s a 50/50 chance her kid will also be born with blue hair?

Unfortunately, the Twitter API we used for reading tweets & awarding credits is now no longer free and would be prohibitively expensive for NightCafe. We hope to be able to bring this back in future but in the meantime, earning credits via Twitter is not possible. Thanks for your understanding.

Supposedly the Ukrainians have crossed the Dnieper/Dnipro River at the Antonovsky Bridge just East of Kherson. Twitter claims are that they engaged and drove off Russian defenders of the 3rd Battalion/57th Brigade. As always these things are not really verified. Nor even if true when published, can change afterwards.

Ukrainian gains are steady if not impressive. The Russian Army simply doesn’t have the reserves to make this into a war of attrition like their supporters figured they would at the beginning of the year. Spring has ended and winter is far off, they can’t rely upon nature to give them breathing room while they try to “train” another group of conscripts.

84
ckkatz  Jun 25, 2023 • 11:06:10pm

Exactly!

What I understand the Russians to have done is to set up 4 lines of fortifications. With the first line 5-10 kilometers behind the frontlines. Between the frontlines and the first line of fortifications many of the troops are low quality convicts and draftees. The regular army units are in the fortification lines and in the mobile reserves.

The Ukrainians created about 9 reserve brigades with Western equipment and training. Only two of these brigades have reportedly been released. The other 7 are still in reserve.

The Ukrainians are reportedly still working their way to the fortifications using their non Western equipped units. The assumed goal is that once the Russians commit their mobile reserves and start crumbling, the reserve brigades will be committed to breach through the fortified lines.

Because nobody is surprised at what is happening, the Ukrainians expect more of an orderly withdrawal like around Kherson rather than a collapse like at Kharkiv.

Is the Army’s New Tactical Bra Ready for Deployment?

It’s fire-resistant but not bulletproof, and was developed with help from eighteen thousand female soldiers.
By Patricia Marx
June 19, 2023

Last summer, with the momentousness of a gender-reveal party and the exuberance of a ticker-tape parade, the United States Army announced its first combat-ready bra to the world. They called it the Army Tactical Brassiere (a.k.a. the A.T.B.). Conceived four years ago, the garment is still being tinkered with, but one day it will be a wardrobe staple for all women in the Army. David Accetta, the chief public-affairs officer for the research division developing the undergarment, the DEVCOM Soldier Center (“DEVCOM” stands for U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command), told Army Times that, if the brassiere is officially approved by the Army Uniform Board, “we would see that as a win for female soldiers.” Ashley Cushon, the project engineer of the team working on the item, assured me that it would “reduce the cognitive burden on the wearer.” And a military Web site reported that the A.T.B. would improve “overall soldier performance and lethality.” Gadzooks! Yes, it’s flame-resistant, but what else can it do? Shoot bullets? Hypnotize the enemy? Turn its wearer invisible?

I decided that I needed to try on The Bra. Full disclosure: there is no undergarment in the world that would gird my loins enough to prepare me for combat. I shy away from quarrels; I am afraid of bear spray. Clothes and gear, however, are another story, and, surprisingly, we owe many of the things that we wear and use every day to the military: beanies, cargo pants, T-shirts, trenchcoats, and aviator glasses—and can we agree that sanitary napkins count as gear? Duct tape, Cheetos, and Silly Putty all have military origins.

*snip*

Apparently.

Which made for a really bad day for the Russian Air Force.

Yep, still remember all the talk on wingnut radio in the summer of ‘07 about how the “Clinton Campaign Machine”tm would eat him up and gnaw on the bones, how it was gonna run him over and just leave one long red smear. That the party leadership didn’t expect his campaign to go anywhere, it was just a way for him to get some experience for a “real” run in ‘12 or perhaps ‘16 if Hillary won reelection.

So Wagner is for all practical purposes supporting Ukraine

Wagner is the enemy of their enemy. Which is very useful, but Ukraine doesn’t want them strong either.

Yeah, well, water under the bridge and looking forward not backward is all very good but the Russian mil bloggers and state propagandists aren’t quite that forgiving, looks like.

Also, Putin is in violation of his own laws on disrespecting the Russian military, which very specifically included Wagner. I’m sure he’ll be turning himself in any time now. He could get five years, but they’ll probably go easy on him as a first offender. Um.

Tin foil hat-wearing Georgia Republican Assembly member arrested at anti-LGBTQ Pride protest

They can’t get it right. We know it’s Reynolds Wrap on the head

rawstory.com

A right-wing activist from Georgia known for literally wearing tin-foil hats to public meetings was arrested along with three allies over the weekend for protesting against a local LGBTQ Pride event.

WRGA News reports that 41-year-old Angela Antonella Rubino, the vice chair of the Etowah chapter of the Georgia Republican Assembly, was arrested because she and three other protesters refused to obtain a permit before taking part in the demonstration against a Pride event in Rome, Georgia.

Rome Assistant Police Chief Debbie Burnett told reporters on Sunday that other anti-LGBTQ Pride activists were allowed to protest at the event after getting a proper permit to do so, but said Rubino and her comrades simply would not do so.

“We told them ‘we don’t care if you protest, just get a permit and do it the right way,’” she explained.

Colorado LGBTQ+ nightclub shooting suspect pleads guilty to 5 counts of murder

The suspect in a mass shooting at LGBTQ bar Club Q in Colorado Springs, Colorado, that left five people dead accepted a plea deal Monday.

Anderson Lee Aldrich, who identifies as nonbinary, has pleaded guilty to five counts of murder in the first degree, 46 counts of attempted murder in the first degree. They pleaded no contest to two bias-motivated crimes.

Aldrich will receive five consecutive life sentences without the possibility for parole on the murder charges, according to Judge Michael McHenry. Aldrich will also receive 46 consecutive 48-year sentences for the attempted murder counts followed by mandatory periods of parole, according to the judge.

Liberty University VP cites Hitler and Stalin in plea for conservatives to ‘control Education’

Ryan Helfenbein is the executive director of Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center, the former Falkirk Center that was renamed after the disgraced Jerry Falwell Jr. resigned as the university’s president. He allegedly is also part of the highly-secretive right-wing Council for National Policy, which has been described as a “pluto-theocracy” by journalist Anne Nelson.

Helfenbein appeared on-camera in an interview at a gala hosted by religious right activist Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition.

“Parents and kids in elementary school are not questioning whether or not they’re a male or a female,” the interviewer said to Helfenbein. “We need to take that away. It’s really brainwashing a generation to (a) deny a maker, and deny their gender,” he added.

“Yeah, wholly agree with that,” Helfenbein responded. “Basically, this is an evangelistic movement on the left, and that’s what’s happening. It’s indoctrination. I mean, they are proselytizing to the next generation. What we’re discovering as parents and conservatives is, ‘Wait a second: education really is evangelism.’ So if you do not control education, you cannot control the future. And Stalin knew that. Mao knew that. Hitler knew that. We have to get that back for conservative values.”

Helfenbein’s remarks echo the Hitler quote an Indiana Moms for Liberty chapter had printed in their newsletter. According to NBC News it read: “He alone, who OWNS the youth, GAINS the future.”

Celluloid Heroes was added, it specifically mentions a place in LA, while “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” was not because it doesn’t specifically mention Hollywood Blvd, although it’s most likely referring to it.

The Sweet’s “The Six Teens” was included because of the references to Sunset Strip, Names in Lights, and the boulevard while the “Desolation Boulevard” album Cover featured L. A. on the cover.

Mr. Kennedy will meet with leading critics of prevailing health policy including Dr. Joe Mercola, Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, Dr. Pierre Kory, Dr. Patrick Gentempo, Maureen McDonnell, Del Bigtree, Mikki Willis, Sayer Ji and others. Anticipate a lively give-and-take involving topics rarely addressed in mainstream policy conversations.

Oh, and what surprised about her remorse over the Bobo incident was that it was the first time MTG made a truly factual statement!

had an item on my desk for over a year (actually 3 related items)
way back when i thought maybe 2 hours work total.

there was virtually no accurate information from the irs on how to handle this
because almost no one’s done it (story of my life)
and the tax sofware for each of the three years did not support it

so when i saw what i was really getting into i dreaded it.
so i procrastinated. a lot.

then dangermom got sick last fall.
then danger-dad-in-law died
then The Franacle’s mom died
then…

anyway i finally got all three done and out the door.
thank the fates that data fields in the tax program can be overridden.

lunch will be good today

South Dakota state Rep. Joe Donnell (R) said on a radio show that Mount Rushmore was a demonic portal spreading communism across the country.

Said Donnell: “Even Donald Trump’s landing in the Black Hills at Mount Rushmore on July 4, when the governor Kristi Noem put the message out that fireworks are returning to South Dakota, that was a prophetic word.”

He added: “And I kinda got the feeling that what we’re really dealing with in that portal was communism. That witchcraft altar and those things that are happening in the Black Hills; what we’re really dealing with is communism; it’s the ideology and all the demonic entities and spirits behind that.”
