Tech Journalist Walt Mossberg Deletes X Account After Epic Rant at Elon Musk and His ‘Cesspool’ Site

Internet • Views: 20,874

Tech journalist Walt Mossberg, who wrote for the Wall Street Journal for more than 20 years, announced this week that he’s deleting his X/Twitter account because Elon Musk has turned it into a “cesspool” of hate speech and antisemitism. Which is, of course, obviously true.

Mr Mossberg cut back his usage of X after Mr Musk bought back controversial figures accounts when he took over ownership of Twitter. Among others, Mr Musk restored the accounts of media personality Andrew Tate, who has been charged over rape and human trafficking claims, as well as Rep Majorie Taylor Greene, who is known for spreading conspiracy theories.

“Under Elon Musk, Twitter has not only decided to stop blocking bigots and liars and pro- insurrectionists, it has actively welcomed them, with apparent support from Mr. Musk. I had already cut my participation there by 90%. But Musk’s latest move, to threaten to ban and sue the ADL – to the delight of antisemites and other haters – is the last straw for me,” Mr Mossberg wrote on Threads.

It’s a little sad, though, that he chose to announce this on Threads, which is run by a techbro every bit as evil as Elon Musk.

re: #309 Patricia Kayden

Do Floridian parents care though? I’m not seeing any pushback. The one Floridian parent I know told me that she doesn’t care about politics and hasn’t paid that much attention to what DeSantis is doing. I was kind of surprised since she’s Black and DeSantis is mucking up what can be taught about slavery.
So where are Floridian parents on what is happening to their children’s education?

The parent may be guarded in her response because she’s black and living in FL.

Having spent my childhood a rural central FL county, where the “dear hearts and gentle people” did their best to make sure “I was carefully taught”; I can well understand that act.

My usual question during such discussions is, “did you vote in the last election, I’m not asking who you voted for, but did you vote in the last election?”

Their answer quickly tells you how involved they want to be, and in what direction any further conversation would lead.

There is a good chance that President Biden will not be the Democratic nominee, and an even better chance that everyone here on this site will support that when his position becomes untenable.

Eek! It’s 102F (39C) here at the conspiracy complex, forecast for 107.

Abbott promises that we will soon be able to run the AC all we want to, as early as November in fact.

I haven’t done much of anything toward getting solar power out here even though the place is well suited to it, with lots of space and more than enough sunlight. It just hasn’t been a priority. I need to move it to the front burner though. The grid has held up pretty well since the great Abbott-freeze year before last. As long as repugs are in power, though, the improvements and changes will be nothing but patches and jury rigging to keep the feds at bay. Abbott’s bosses are making money from it so no other improvements are needed from their POV. It is inevitable that there will be more massive outages.

This highlights one of the many advantages of being in an actual political party rather than an evil cult. We would have no trouble accepting, a successor if Biden cannot run for some reason. Unlike Trump, Biden has a rational plan for that contingency and almost certainly updates it on a regular basis. In contrast, the Trumpsters’ worldview will collapse if their guy cannot run. Surgeon Sex and Long-Term Postoperative Outcomes Among Patients Undergoing Common Surgeries

Conclusions and Relevance: After accounting for patient, procedure, surgeon, anesthesiologist, and hospital characteristics, the findings of this cohort study suggest that patients treated by female surgeons have lower rates of adverse postoperative outcomes including death at 90 days and 1 year after surgery compared with those treated by male surgeons. These findings further support differences in patient outcomes based on physician sex that warrant deeper study regarding underlying causes and potential solutions.

Additional info: statnews.com

Probably a number of reasons behind this but one they seem to gloss over in the article is how male doctors treat/connect with female patients:

Researchers also found that while in general patients had better outcomes with female surgeons, female patients fared far worse than expected and had higher rates of adverse postoperative events within a year when treated by male surgeons.

In Colorado it’s 10 cents per bag, plastic or paper.

Kroger loads your pickup order into your own bags at the car, but writes it off if you didn’t bring enough bags. Makes it a little more of a pain for the pickup staff, but saves the plastic.

Safeway probably varies, but the guy at our local store just pre-loads into plastic and doesn’t charge. I know they’re chronically understaffed, so it’s probably cost-effective in terms of time spent. I would have to ask my kid what the official practice was — “drive up and go” was his part-time position before he got the full-time professional job in July.

Probably a number of reasons behind this but one they seem to gloss over in the article is how male doctors treat/connect with female patients:

From your second link:

Kelleher speculated that maybe female surgeons are also discussing what postoperative care might look like, so patients can adhere to those recommendations, or they’re listening to patients more after surgery. [my bold]

“There’s something qualitatively different about the kind of practice that female surgeons have,” Kelleher said.

Women get the experience of not being taken seriously on a daily basis. It’s more frustrating at a doctor’s office, because she’s talking about her body, in which she’s the unsurpassed expert. Combine that with being not-white, and it’s worse. The maternal mortality rate is sky high for Black women.

When I was a kid, the woman across the street went to the hospital to have her 6th baby. There, when she told them it was time, they made her wait, saying ‘no it isn’t’ and left her in the hall. She said, ‘This is my sixth, I know what I’m talking about, it’s time.’ They shoved a towel between her legs and killed the baby.

She was Hispanic.

Also, I don’t think it would be Pete as VP. Not sure who it would be, but just a hunch it wouldn’t be Pete.

I’m just speculating if Joe stepped down what would happen afterward, not thinking of a campaign or from the Presidency. He would only do it for health reasons if he didn’t think he could do the job, either job.

My Walmart has a recycling station up front for their bags and all such flexible plastics. I take the bags full of packaging and bubble wrap and beverage rings, etc.

Don’t know about Walmart around here. Kroger(King Soopers) and Safeway have taken out their bag recycling bins.

But we found a growing little company called Ridwell that recycles bags, clothes, styrofoam and all sorts of other things that the standard glass/aluminum/plastic container plans don’t cover. Have to pay for it separately, have to be in their service area, but they pick up from your porch every other week. Then they work with local charities to pass along usable items; and with companies that turn plastic or fabric into new things. It’s an interesting business model, hope they continue to expand.

I save some of the standard plastic grocery bags as cheap small trashcan liners. Occasionally request paper bags for my groceries, then use them for collecting paper and cardboard to be recycled, since Waste Management does NOT want plastic bags in the recycling bin.

Does that count for a brownie point in the ‘save the planet’ sweepstakes? Can’t afford to buy a new electric car.

The Ridwell folks take certain kinds of styrofoam — blocks, peanuts, shipping coolers. They don’t take food containers, drat it. But they say their partners recycle it into items like picture frames and roofing insulation.

Ridwell also takes batteries and light bulbs, so that’s one less category to add to the yearly hazmat collection.

8 years as a state AG, 4 years in the Senate, and 4-8 years as VP is a fairly standard presidential resume. I’d say that puts her fairly close to the mean in modern times for winners. More experience than Ike, Carter, Reagan, GW Bush, Obama, or Trump (obviousLy). Less than Biden, LBJ, or GHW Bush (or Ford, even though he didn’t technically win the presidency). But pretty close to the cluster of Nixon, JFK, and Clinton.

When I was last employed at a restaurant, they were ‘into’ recycling, sort of. I know if the city’s garbage service was recycling what goes in those bins, we’d would have been getting much more instruction about what goes where.

They did well with kitchen scraps. Farmers would come twice a week to pick them up for their pigs and chickens, saved in 5 gallon buckets that came back, got washed and used again until they would leak.

I still suspect that the US is not ready for a female President.

Something Haley is discovering as she still struggles to get more than 7% in the GOP nomination surveys.

I’m sorry. The use of ‘not ready’ there is a stroke of passivity that excuses everyone of everything.

2028: Governor Newsom has been angling for that for some time.

As for Kamala Harris: by me she’s fine. I thought she was one of the better candidates for the 2020 nomination.

If one objects to her having been a DA/AG, then are all DAs or AGs disallowed?

Not automatically; just ones who do stuff like Harris did, as summarized in the NYT article I linked. But unfortunately, people who want to become DAs/AGs seem to have similar outlooks to those who want to become cops. There are exceptions. Scott Harshbarger was great, for example.

What kind of slogan is “I’m with her”? What does that mean? How does that inspire?
How did her VP choice help in any way?
Despite all that, she probably would have won if it wasn’t for Comey’s October surprise. But it wasn’t a great race by any means.

Who is saying that they’ll support Harris because she’s a Black woman?

Who’s not supporting her because she’s a black woman?

Wiki on Harshbarger (excerpt)

Changing party

In June, 2016 Harshbarger announced that he would be leaving the Democratic Party to join the United Independent Party to assist them in reaching the voter enrollment necessary to remain a recognized party in Massachusetts.[6] After a year, he returned to the Democratic Party.[7]

Great DA, not necessarily great Democrat?

I never pay attention to campaign slogans.

Indeed, the last one I remember is “Whip Inflation Now”, only because it became so infamous.

Can’t read the NYT submitted opinion pieces.

I remember some people really hating on Harris.

But I also remember that some of the things for which Harris was blamed was not always discretionary on her part.

She didn’t go to Wisconsin. Her campaign (or maybe it was the DNC) ignored Michigan’s pleas for assistance and resources because it was so close. And she started measuring the drapes much too soon (those white balloons and public announcement of the fireworks show they’d planned for “first woman elected”) made it seem she wasn’t taking it seriously.

Among the most egregious things: fighting tooth and nail using legal technicalities to keep wrongfully convicted people behind bars, pushing for a law that had parents arrested if kids missed too much school, fighting a federal order to release low risk prisoners due to overcrowding concerns because… the state didn’t want to lose cheap prison labor, etc.

re: #90 KGxvi

8 years as a state AG, 4 years in the Senate, and 4-8 years as VP is a fairly standard presidential resume. I’d say that puts her fairly close to the mean in modern times for winners. More experience than Ike, Carter, Reagan, GW Bush, Obama, or Trump (obviousLy). Less than Biden, LBJ, or GHW Bush (or Ford, even though he didn’t technically win the presidency). But pretty close to the cluster of Nixon, JFK, and Clinton.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—Kamala gets a bad rap for no good reason.
