It’s going to rain… a lot for you up north in central California, but also for you in LA.

Down here near the border we’ll get a bit of rain.

Good for the loquats, which recovered given all the rain last winter, compared to years of drought in prior years.

But few loquat trees remain in my neighborhood. Seems like people have cut most of them down.

Sad.

Meet the woman working to stop the far-right creator money machine
Nandini Jammi is fighting to defund right-wing influencers like Alex Jones
wapo.st (gift link)

When Elon Musk reinstated far-right influencer and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’s account on X on Sunday night, digital marketer and activist Nandini Jammi sprang into action. She posted on X to alert her followers to his return and began monitoring his posts.
“We’ve been working on alerting advertisers to the two platforms where Alex Jones primarily lives, Rumble and Twitter,” Jammi said, using X’s former name. “Alex Jones has proven to be a dangerous conspiracy theorist, and Twitter is reopening a channel for him to earn ad revenue.”

Good Person!!

Pre-dating From the Smallest to the Largest by 46 years, 1977’s Powers of Ten tours the universe at scales from 10-8 meters to 1024 meters. The animation is outdated now but the story it tells is still amazing and impossible to grasp the magnitudes involved.

Some 60’s tune are just as good today. Sonny and Cher had great writers and pro musicians. And great producers.
Cher was 18 years old. 1964.
Great sing along.
I was 13.

Off to take care of some things. Have a good one.

The Europeans didn’t “murder their own children just to frame Jews,” priests and monks murdered the children to keep them from telling their parents the priest had raped them. Then the priest blamed the Jews.

that’s Squeak.

we named her because of how she used to sound.
not any longer. now she’s a whiny meower

meanwhile, Monster in his last few months developed an obvious squeak. we were gonna change their names but, well, you know.

i think some of her meowing is loneliness. she wonders why she’s the only cat now, and sometimes the only one in the house.

of course when we get home we’re instantly ignored, but that’s another story…

Ex-FBI official raises specter missing intel file under Trump was handed to Russia

I assume that the whole investigation at Mar-a-lago may have started to find this one binder. It is so important that they did not even want anyone to know if it was missing. The other ones are important but this is the big kahuna.

It is so sensitive they would not want anyone to know it was even missing. So why is it coming out now? I hope it is due to one of these:

1) They found the document at MAL. It is too sensitive to be allowed into a court case but could still damage Trump by its existence being publicized.

2) The document made it to Putin and we know about that from our own intelligence. So it is being leaked in bits and pieces to damage Trump. What a bombshell if we can show he sold it to Putin!

Hope it is one of these. If we still do not know where it is …

Possibly because Cassidy Hutchinson mentioned it in her book Enough which came out at the end of September. Suspect that is what led to the current interest in the topic, especially since she said Meadows walked off with it.

Not an insect.

Mastodon

Entognatha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Entognatha are a class of wingless and ametabolous arthropods, which, together with the insects, makes up the subphylum Hexapoda.[1][2] Their mouthparts are entognathous, meaning that they are retracted within the head, unlike the insects.[1] Entognatha are apterous, meaning that they lack wings. The class contains three orders: Collembola (springtails, 9000 species),[3] Diplura (“two-tail”, 1000 species)[4] and Protura (“first-tail”, 800 species)[5].[1][2] These three groups were historically united with the now-obsolete order Thysanura to form the class Apterygota, but it has since been recognized that the hexapodous condition of these animals has evolved independently from that of insects, and independently within each order.[6] The orders might not be closely related, and Entognatha is now considered to be a paraphyletic group.[2]

Extremely dirty, and everyone knows it.

There is a protected band of land around the Greater Toronto Area (Toronto and suburbs) Farmland and important water courses in it. It’s called The Greenbelt.

Doug Ford performed a ‘land swap’ exchanging land in the Greenbelt for land elsewhere and opening the released land to developers. Most of the developers have ties to Ford and the Forward-Backward Party. Sorry, Progressive-Conservatives.

[I am writing this analysis off the top of my head and from memory. So I am willing to admit it may well be wrong but I wanted to start a conversation that has been bubbling up for me wrt SNL.]

Pongo really weirded me out. Started out kinda off and descended into real horror. The humor did not go in the direction I might expect from safe comedy.

I have to say that SNL this season has been pretty interesting. They may not have the pacing quite down yet and sometimes go too long. I put that on a lot of new cast members and writers.

But their skits have, to my mind, become more and more surrealistic. Which has been fascinating. Like Orcas attacking the North Pole.

North Pole News: Killer Whale Attack

North Pole News: Killer Whale Attack - SNL

I mean, she vomits Skittles!!

Last night they also had a skit whose only point was to describe cats with awful puns for their names. Or another one where a Yankee Trade Christmas saw people trading away amazing gifts for a dancing Santa singing boogie woogie.

They had one cut for time on dealing with people who do not RSVP email invitations, starting with throwing a brick through their window to sending in wild dogs to tear them apart.

Instead of hitting politics and such directly (I do not think we have seen as many overt political skits as in the last few years), they come at issues absurdly indirect. I kinda like it.

Last night I was laughing at the Orca skit even as I was wondering if this was supposed to resonate with real life events like 9/11 or Oct 7 (“Santa knew!!”). They had to know there would likely be some resonance here.

Surrealism has always been part of SNL humor but it seems that most of the recent decades they dealt mostly with situational skits (The Californians. Bill Hader as Stefan. Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in Undercover Boss. Schweaty balls).

And often when they did somethig a little off they simply did not have the courage to take it to its logical end (The Davd S. Pumpkins skit is very surreal but has a pretty conventional ending - he finally did scare them). It seemed they still wanted to leave us comfortable not conflicted. More Mary Tyler Moore humor than All in the Family.

I noticed the surreal aspect last season with Susan Sherman and her instant classic, Meatballs. I think she is having an even greater impact on skits this year.

Meatballs - SNL

This humor makes one uncomfortable even as we smile.

Now this season reminds me of some of the first season’s courage to take things to the absolute limit, even when uncomfortable (Mr. Mike’s impression of 18 inch spikes driven into his eyes. Andy Kaufman in any skit. Save the Liver. Any Samurai skit)

I may not like every skit this year but I am intrigued enough to see where they go this season. Will they be allowed to sharpen this new approach or will NBC want to push them back to comfortable?

My new acoustic guitar was just dropped off by FedEx but I’m not supposed to open the box for 24 hours according to a big label pasted to it. The label warns me to wait to allow the temperature of the enclosed instrument to slowly stabilize to room temperature since its traveled over a variety of climates since it was shipped and shocking it could damage the finish or the wood. I’m inclined to believe it since the company I bought from ships mega-buttloads of these things and has seen all sorts of bad things happen. I’ll wait…

The surreal aspect of that was for Che to have poet Hattie Davis brought out next to Colin in a wheelchair. She sat there and shook her head at the awful things Colin said (“If you ask me, You’re even a better Black Widow than Coretta Scott King”). That was the joke and it was powerful. And then at the end, when he extended a hand, she said no way, causing him to break up.

How they pull off such awful jokes, so racist and inappropriate, demonstrates their understanding of just where the line is and how to exploit it. Half the fun is that they do not know the lines before hand. And that Che’s jokes really puncture white privilege in a relatively safe way.
