Of course the most corrupt Chief Justice in American History issues an and-of year report with no mention of ethics.

Probably written by an intern with the Federalist Society

rawstory.com

The reputation of the Supreme Court flowed quickly down the drain in 2023 as more reports detailed the scandalous breach of ethics unfolding at the High Court. The final report of the year from Chief Justice John Roberts left out mounting questions for the top judiciary and problems about whether the body is too far gone to repair its image.

Washington Post columnist Ann E. Marimow wrote Sunday that the yearly report from Roberts left out a lot, and it’s not going to help as the Court enters 2024.

“Instead, he looked back on technological advancements in the nation’s court system, detailing developments from the quill pens used by justices in the 19th century to electronic databases of the 1980s to online trial proceedings prompted by the coronavirus pandemic,” wrote Marimow.

While Roberts rambled on about artificial intelligence, he refused to acknowledge the elephant in the room.

“Public approval of the Supreme Court remains at historically low levels, reflecting a dip that followed its 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate the nationwide right to abortion,” said Marimow.

Meanwhile, Justice Clarence Thomas has been destroyed publicly after he was exposed for accepting benefits for his mother, his adopted nephew, his wife and luxury travel, all from a single super-wealthy Republican donor with at least one case before him.

What Roberts did do in 2023 was craft a formal code of conduct, though it does little to address the issue at hand and protect the integrity and impartiality of the Court.

“The policy was praised by some as a positive initial step, but criticized by legal ethics experts for giving the justices too much discretion over recusal decisions and for not including a process for holding the justices accountable if they violate their own rules,” wrote Marimow.

In 2024, the Court will be forced to decide on so-called “absolute immunity” for the president and whether the ruling of the Colorado Supreme Court should be upheld for kicking Donald Trump off the ballot. It happens at a time when there are calls for Justice Thomas to recuse himself after his wife participated in efforts to overthrow the 2020 election and encouraged state lawmakers to invalidate the count.

“Roberts did not mention that this time last year the court was finishing its investigation into the shocking leak of Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.’s draft opinion that eventually overturned a half-century of abortion rights,” recalled Marimow. “The court’s investigative report released last January did not determine the identity of the leaker.”

It also ignored the fact that Alito himself wasn’t investigated.

“While the court’s IT experts did not rule out a hack, the report said there was no evidence to suggest improper access to the court’s IT networks,” closed Marimow.

And remember folks that this corrupted court only answers to one person—Leonard Leo.

Yeah…stop thinking about Trump’s legal problems folks…concentrate on Hunter Biden’s Penis which is what the Republican 24/7 BS Machine is cranking up to 11…

Trump attorney urges voters: Stop ‘thinking he’s got all these legal problems’

Christina Bobb, an attorney for former President Donald Trump, doesn’t want voters “thinking he’s got all these legal problems.”

During a Sunday interview on Newsmax, Bobb was asked if Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows should be punished after she declared Trump ineligible for the ballot because he participated in an insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021.

“I think an impeachment is a good start,” Bobb suggested. “However, I would encourage the attorney general or the district attorneys in Maine to take a closer look at this and possibly investigate her for abuse of authority, abuse of power, and election interference, because this no doubtedly is election interference.”

According to Bobb, Bellows should be punished for election interference even if Trump’s name appears on the ballot.

“By putting out all of this propaganda, this narrative that Trump isn’t going to be ineligible,” she continued, “trying to instill fear in the voters that, oh, maybe I shouldn’t vote for him because maybe he won’t, you know, maybe I shouldn’t follow him because he won’t be on the ballot.”

Bobb then suggested the former president’s supporters should not view Trump’s four indictments and multiple lawsuits as evidence of serious legal problems.

“They’re trying to discourage people from supporting Donald Trump, thinking he’s got all these legal problems,” she scoffed. “That is election interference, and she needs to be held accountable for it.”

French Onion Strata (Savory Bread Pudding) Recipe

The flavors of French onion soup repackaged into a hearty, cheesy bread pudding that’s perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a light one-pan dinner.

Ingredients
For the Caramelized Onions:

3 tablespoons (45g) unsalted butter, plus more for greasing baking dish
3 large Spanish onions (about 2 1/2 pounds; 1kg), thinly sliced
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3 medium cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh thyme leaves
1/4 cup (60ml) dry sherry
1/2 cup (120ml) dry white wine

For the Strata:

1 large Italian or French bread loaf (about 1 pound; 450g), cut into 1-inch cubes
6 large eggs
3 1/2 cups (830ml) half-and-half or whole milk
1 1/2 tablespoons (22ml) smooth Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon (15ml) Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon (5ml) fish sauce (optional)
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 1/2 cups (8 ounces) grated Gruyère cheese

Directions
For the Caramelized Onions: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat, then add onions, sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt. Cover and cook, stirring every few minutes, until onions have softened, about 10 minutes. Remove lid and cook, stirring frequently and keeping skillet uncovered, until onions are deep golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes; if onions threaten to burn at any point, stir in a tablespoon or two of water as needed, and/or lower heat. Add garlic and thyme and cook 1 minute longer. Add sherry and wine and cook until liquid has almost completely evaporated, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Meanwhile, for the Strata: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread bread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake until bread is dry but not browned, about 8 minutes.

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half or milk, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, fish sauce (if using), 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper. Add dried bread and let soak in custard for at least 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes.

Butter a 12-inch cast iron skillet or a 9- by 13-inch baking dish and add half of the bread. Scatter half of caramelized onions and half of cheese all over. Layer remaining bread on top and scatter remaining onions and cheese over. Drizzle any remaining custard all over, then bake until bread is crisp and custard is just set, about 35 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature.

When we were going through the CDs today I found a home burnt copy of Nickelback’s first album - was going to throw it away then a piece of paper fell out. It was from my wife’s Uncle Frankie, who took a liking to me when we first got together and would send me Neil Young bootlegs and other music at random times throughout the year as we identified with each other on a music level. On the note he explained that there were some things about this first album that made it worth listening to and I should give it a shot at least once. As he passed away about 8 years ago I feel I should honor his request…when I get the CD up to the river house and on decent speakers. I owe him that much.

Ron DeSantis has been threatening to “flatten” the Bahamas.

Well… it’s DeSantis, but the analogy he’s making isn’t all that bad. Hamas has for a long time been lobbing missiles at random at Israel — an act of war and a war crime even leaving out their massacre cum kidnapping on October 7. If someone (like the Bahamas) were doing that to us, I doubt we’d just turn the other cheek.

(I expect his apparent glee at the prospect worried his Caribbean neighbors. And there’s no need to be specific about who might be doing it to make your point.)

But I do think she had interesting ideas about modern art, and that everyone saying that “Yoko broke up the Beatles,” as if John Lennon wasn’t a fully formed man with agency in his own artistic life, is kind of messed up and misogynistic.

Yoko Ono has had an interesting life. She was born into an elite Japanese family, went to the Peers School (Gakushūin) for high school and started at Gakushūin University. She then went to the USA in 1952 and did quite a bit of stuff in NYC avant-garde circles prior to meeting Lennon in the late 1960s. She has lived over 40 years since he died. During pretty much all that time she has done art, music, various installations and suchlike. It would be interesting to compare and contrast her with the artist Yayoi Kusama, who is four years older, born pretty solidly middle class, who is also an artist (trained in Nihonga painting), who also came to the USA in the mid-1950s but left in 1972 to go to Japan. I would suspect it’s us Olds who know the name Yoko Ono, but Yayoi Kusama is probably more famous among the young for her artwork, particularly her Infinity Room installations and her dot artworks.

Oh yeah, there’s a video of Plastic Ono band performing Instant Karma and Yoko Ono is not singing. Instead, she is sitting in a chair, blindfolded with a menstruation pad,* and crocheting. As someone who has spent a good chunk of my life crocheting, I am rather in awe. Not anyone could do that.

* It wasn’t until many years later that I learned it was a menstruation pad, which were the bane of my early teen years. Yeah, I hated them too.

*re Yoko Ono

In 1968 (I think), I hitch-hiked a ride to London from Yorkshire, and sort of ended up hanging out at ‘The Arts Lab’, Drury Lane. There was all sorts of weird going on around that time, mostly focussed upon mind-altering subtances. Anyhoo, there was an exhibit at the Arts Lab, apparently attributed to Yoko Ono, which was quite literally (by the time I arrived there) dried up orange peel.

It makes you wonder.

Not sure exactly why because I loved the earlier albums but Steven Wilson’s new Porcupine Tree stuff just doesn’t grab me.

I still enjoy Tree (while Closure/Continuation is not as awesome as Fear of a Black Planet, it held my attention) and frankly, Wilson is one of the few artists I would buy an album from without listening to the music beforehand. The Raven That Refused to Sing is one of my favorites. And his remixes of the Gentle Giant albums (GG being one of the bands that helped form my love for progressive music after I heard Octopus) were like entirely new albums.

She must be responding to the poll the other day showing that 1/3 of Repub voters have said they won’t vote for a convicted felon.

It’s been hilarious to watch it go from “Trump will never be indicted” to “Indicting Trump would be a massive mistake for the good of the nation” to “Trump’s gonna beat these charges and go on to win!” to now “PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE CHARGES, THEY DON’T MATTER!!!”

Looks like Mother Nature is starting 2024 in grand style:

Japan issued tsunami alerts Monday after a series of strong quakes in the Sea of Japan.

The Japan Meterological Agency reported quakes off the coast of Ishikawa and nearby prefectures shortly after 4 p.m., one of them with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6.

It issued a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa and lower-level tsunami warnings or advisories for the rest of the western coast of the island of Honshu.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV warned torrents of water could reach as high as 5 meters (16.5 feet) and urged people to flee to high land or a top of a nearby building as quickly as possible.

Reminds me of when we were still under Marriott’s flag, the hotel landed a contract with the construction company responsible for building a shiny new IKEA store in Norfolk for (IIRC) something like 16 rooms over the winter. Well, as part of the contract or some separate agreement with management, we were to provide a bit of a morale boost for the construction guys by hosting weekly SNF parties in our breakfast room and provide free beer and snacks.

It ended up lasting just short of two months before management put the kibosh on the whole thing because the assholes were just showing up, loading their pockets with “free” beer and snacks, and then going back to their rooms. And when we tried to enforce a rule to keep the “free” goodies within the confines of the breakfast room, they started argued with and made threats towards our staff, which management first tried to ignore and then ended up telling the company if they didn’t start yanking leashes then it was over. Well the company did nothing, their shitheads kept acting like shitheads, and the whole thing got shut down.

I turned off notifications on my phone because I didn’t want to be interrupted when I went to sleep, I was already having a tough time as it was with all the idiots popping off firecrackers. So I missed the *24* earthquake/tsunami warnings that NHK sent through my phone, but woke up anyway at 05:00 because of the call of the bathroom. I have another channel (ANN) going in Japanese in the background.

I also missed the forwarded gender reveal announcement from my nephew—he and his wife are expecting a girl, I think in May? They just moved house (as in *just*, they were doing it this past week).

Ex-boyfriend and I went to see Godzilla yesterday and we both liked it. He thanked me for inviting him out to the movie, which means he really liked it. What’s weird is how we were driving around after the movie and I was talking about Japanese building standards and how buildings tend to be rebuilt after 30 years or so, in part because earthquake standards improve. (Also because Tokyo burned to the ground in 1923 during the Great Kanto Earthquake and then again during the firebombing of Tokyo in 1945.)

I’m going back to bed, it’s still dark outside.

ETA: Having an earthquake on January 1 in Japan has got to suck. It’s during a (for most people) 3 day New Year holiday, and for sure the government wasn’t in session.

The Michigan GOP is suffering its own earthquakes and tsunami’s, and its glorious.

When fiery, election-denying, Trump supporting Kristina Karamo was elected chair of the Michigan Republican Party, right-wingers in the state were ecstatic. Now they are furious and want to give her the boot. The annual gathering on Mackinac Island was a failure. Attendance was way down, top presidential candidates passed on it, some scheduled speakers didn’t show up, and it came out that the state party took out a $110,000 loan to get Jim Caviezel, who has an ardent right-wing following, to show up. Oh, and the state party is $620,000 in debt, major donors are fleeing, and the RNC won’t give it money to help candidates because it is afraid Karamo will just spend it to pay down the debt. Or maybe to hire some other celebrity speaker. Kid Rock is local. So is Ted Nugent. Of course, neither of them ever played Jesus on screen.

This is no way to start an election year in a key swing state. Forty of the 120 members of the state committee are working to force Karamo out. So are eight of the 13 Republican congressional district chairs. But Karamo is not budging. With all the infighting, no money, and volunteers disappearing, the party is in no condition to help Republican candidates for president, the Senate, the House, or state offices.

The problems have not gone unnoticed. State Rep. Mark Tisdel (R) said: “The Michigan Republican Party is on the verge of imploding; I have more money in my campaign account than the state party has in its. Sooner or later, the creditors are going to come calling.” Karamo also tried to pressure small businesses into ponying up $10 to $50 a month to the party. The plan failed miserably. Karamo’s response to her critics is to denounce infighting. She also fired dissident party officials, while others resigned. She also dissolved the party’s conflict-resolution committee. And she tried to sell the party’s former headquarters to raise cash. One catch: The party doesn’t actually own it.

What really grated some members was Karamo’s scheme of rating members from 1 (solid Republican) to 4 (RINO). A former congressman, Pete Hoekstra, said: “We’re supposed to be building a party, not dividing a party into four categories. (V)

It’s nice for counting, but since they would have been pretty good mathematicians, 60 is a nice number because it’s divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60, making it very useful for creating many different sizes of fractions of time or angles.

If you use the method given on both hands, you could get to 156 if you treat each hand as a base 12 digit (if they had 0, they could actually get to 168).

It’s always interesting to review the end-of-the-year list of those who passed away sometime during the previous year. Beyond the usual litany of sports/political/actor/musician names, there was a somewhat unusual category of criminal types. Such deaths in 2023 included Ted Kaczynski, the unabomber, Robert Hanssen, FBI agent who sold secrets to the Soviets, and Kevin Mitnick, computer hacker (reformed). The first two died in prison and Mitnick was released and became a cybersecurity advocate.

Kevin Mitnick had an interesting story. He got his ham radio license at about the same time he committed his crimes. He served his time, but then he had to renew his license.

The FCC held his renewal. He had to pay a communications lawyer some $30,000 to get his renewal un-held so he could keep his license.

He did.

He was well-regarded amongst us in the ham radio community, and we mourned him. I have one of the lockpick business cards that his company gave out.

Not sure exactly why because I loved the earlier albums but Steven Wilson’s new Porcupine Tree stuff just doesn’t grab me.

So…I’m not the only one. Their prior album ‘The Incident’ kinda sucked as well. You could tell the current iteration of Porcupine Tree was falling apart.

Jelly Roll - I’ve seen him on a couple of ‘all star’ specials recently. Is he famous for having a really bad tattoo artist and poor choice of placement? Or is he famous for not having a cardiac arrest on stage? He’s got a little bit of that Meatloaf energy, but he doesn’t have the voice or talent Meatloaf has, IMO. But give him credit for monetizing himself. I’m sure his managers are happy.

Haven’t been able to use my toilet pretty much since midday Saturday.
