The first question that should be asked to anyone pushing this bill is “So, does this mean we can finally raise the minimum wage?” After all, for ages now, the most common argument has been that minimum wage jobs are strictly meant for teens to earn some spending cash and learn some job skills.

Business is business. Kids are often paid a lower wage than the state minimums. They can work up to 50 hours a week and can serve alcohol before they are legally allowed to drink it. And even blue states are open to the ‘character’ building aspect. One argument I read - if kids play football until 9 pm they should be allowed to work if they want.
Pretty much used by service industries that cannot afford to pay adults a living wage. Money talks.

I don’t think it will happen as the case is still going up to the Supreme Court. The recent ruling is not a permanent decision.
The question whether Abbott must remove the state’s razor wire is part of a case that will be decided by the notoriously conservative New Orleans-based 5th Circuit of Appeals in coming weeks. That decision faces a likely appeal to the Supreme Court.
I expect he will wait until we see just what the final verdict is. Which likely won’t happen until after election day.

I’m sure there are some in the higher-up reaches of the media that are explicitly favorable to Republicans, but I don’t think that sentiment is universal; I think they really are just trying to figure out the best way to make things as “both sides” as possible.

Dems use ‘parade of embarrassments’ in Biden probe to tar and feather House Republicans
When Republicans recaptured the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2022 midterms, Democrats argued that their small majority would launch frivolous Hunter Biden investigations rather than focus on issues that affect the quality of Americans’ lives such as health care, job creation and the environment. And the GOP’s House majority, as they predicted, has been aggressively probing Hunter Biden’s business activities and may impeach his father, President Joe Biden.
But the Daily Beast’s Riley Rogerson, in an article published on January 25, reports that House Democrats, rather than feeling intimidated, are responding to the probes with brutal mockery and slamming them as a joke.
One of those Democrats is Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida), who told the Daily Beast, “They’ve decided to turn it into Cirque Du Soleil Oversight where literally, it’s just a total show. If that is the game that they are going to play, then game on.”
Rogerson cites Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), Rep. Dan Goldman (D-New York), Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Florida), Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) and Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pennsylvania) as other examples of House Democrats who have “torn into Republican rhetoric” during the Bidens-related probes and are “exposing their puffery as political theater.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland) described House Democrats who have been forcefully pushing back against these anti-Bidens theatrics as “the Truth Squad.”
Raskin told the Daily Beast, “I was basically looking for extremely hardworking, detail-oriented members who know how to throw a punch in the media. Because I knew exactly what we would be up against.”
Rogerson notes that even some House Republicans consider Rep. James Comer’s (R-Kentucky) anti-Bidens efforts a waste of time.
A House Republican who was interviewed by The Messenger on condition of anonymity complained, “It’s been a parade of embarrassments.”

Here’s why that’s bad news for Biden (again). All economic news is bad news for Biden. Good news is bad because it wont last through the election. Bad news is bad for Biden because of course it is.
Some editorialists are finally getting it. Understanding it all, including the complicit activity of other editors and media organizations.
Realpolitik and self-interest may also be at play. Some reporters, editors and producers in mainstream media are positioning themselves with the expectation that Trump will win the election. They want access to his regime; the first Trump presidency was a media feeding frenzy.
Furthermore, many leading voices in the media, especially the professional centrists and institutionalists, have been conditioned by privilege to believe they are immune from any possible danger or threat, even from a dictatorial regime. Because of their skin color, their gender and sexual orientation, their class backgrounds and their lives rich with social and cultural capital, they cannot imagine they ever could become targets of state-sponsored violence. They may well learn otherwise.

Longtime Mike Johnson pastor faces financial mismanagement claims from his own congregants
Louisiana pastor Brad Jurkovich, who for years was the pastor to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), is facing allegations of financial mismanagement from members of his own congregation, reports The Daily Beast.
In a lawsuit filed by congregants in the church, Jurkovich is accused of violating church bylaws while also “alleging that church leaders improperly rewrote the 80-year-old rules in a ‘power grab’ that transformed the congregation into a Jurkovich-led ‘dictatorship,’ giving him essentially absolute control over financial and strategic decisions,” writes The Daily Beast.
What’s more, the congregants allege that Jurkovich “engaged in self-dealing and impermissibly steered church funds to another right-wing faith-based organization with a clear ideological and tacitly political agenda — the Conservative Baptist Network — where Jurkovich is a top official.”
The suit goes on to allege that Jurkovich diverted funds to the Conservative Baptist Network that had originally been earmarked to go to the Southern Baptist Convention, which had angered Jurkovich for not making a full-throated denouncement of critical race theory.
And that’s not all — a review of Jurovich’s pastoral history by The Daily Beast found that he was ousted as pastor at the Victory Life Church Lubbock, Texas in the 2000s.

Yes and no. It has the appearance of being favorable to Republicans, but that’s because Republicans are so odious that they have to stand on the scales in order for it to seem like a fair comparison. I’m sure there are some in the higher-up reaches of the media that are explicitly favorable to Republicans, but I don’t think that sentiment is universal; I think they really are just trying to figure out the best way to make things as “both sides” as possible.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him think. At the very least, by giving people the tools, they have a chance. As it stands right now, there are too many people who are nothing but suckers for whatever they’re told by people they respect, regardless of how true it is.
I work with people my age who were taught the scientific method. These people have no problem questioning our bosses or others when they try to require something that doesn’t make sense, and yet they deny climate change, are anti-abortion while complaining that their guns are going to be taken away, and think the border should be shut down. Reconcile that.

This is an important discussion that often gets dismissed in my field and I think everyone should at least skim the article.
One of the biggest frustrations I had while working at a Fortune 500 Medical Device company was never having the opportunity to really talk to the patients. The company would bring in leading expert physicians, have engineers go to observe implants, attend conferences and meet with thought leaders. The company has multiple advisory boards composed of clinicians and thought leaders and the company finally set up an advisory board about five years ago composed of nurses and other “stakeholders” that included one patient representative (a patient with personal experience of only one of the many therapy solutions). There are now a few usability engineers, but that area is way understaffed and focuses on clinician users.
Part of the problem is reimbursement and money. I might have been able to get a director’s ear if I had an idea that would eliminate having a patient drive two hours one-way for a fifteen-minute device programming session. Such discussions always end with “how would the company get paid for that?” and “well, it’s always good for the patient to have an opportunity to meet with their physician”.
There’s very little incentive for medical device companies, hospitals, clinics, to make life easier for a patient.

I suspect that Trump would view a short stint in jail for contempt of court as yet another fund raising opportunity. The judge should fine him instead, which Trump would also use as a fund raising opportunity, but it probably wouldn’t generate the same amount of revenue as jail would.

True: I grew up there (50s-60s-70s), and the partisan makeup was always shifting - and CA was not a “gimme” state for either Party. But the CA GOP ended up digging their own graves, IMHO: they had their mindset firmly fixed in about 1928 for many many decades: and when they finally shifted, it was only to update to about 1968 - again, long after it was politically relevant.
I think the Gray Davis recall (and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s unexpected election) was the Republicans’ last hurrah in the Golden State: Arnold tried to tell them what they doing wrong, but (as they had always done), they ignored him.
