re: #450 Hecuba’s daughter
It came down to the GOP voters thinking of Trump as someone new and exciting, while the rest of candidates were the same old boring stuff. Ted Cruz was viewed as an unlikable liar. Given that the Republican mantra was that America should be run like a business and given the years-long success of The Apprentice, it’s not surprising how 2016 Republican primaries turned out. Trump is a showman and he gave the voters a show. The press, as usually happens, totally failed the country in the general election — as did the FBI director, who more than anyone (except Putin) may have been responsible for Hillary losing.
For sure.
But the embrace of Trump by so many really is the most obvious sign that the entire right wing, the religious right in particular but also the (tiny in number) secular right, are at an end ideologically.
They have two ways to turn: 1) abandon their atavism for the 21st century, or 2) dive headlong into fascism (layered with “libertarian” and techno cosmetics to cover up the true beliefs.)
There is no way to go from creationism other than an ideological crisis.
There is no way to go from Manifest Destiny, other than an ideological crisis.
There is no way to go from Free-Market-as-Savior other than an ideological crisis.
When one is stuck in the trap of thinking you are the truth, the true truth, and the only truth, then anything that might confront you as data to the contrary cannot be accepted.
Fluidity of beliefs is often derided (by absolutists) as that dreaded word: compromise.
But as I have repeated over and over: life is about compromise.
That’s true at a cellular level as it is for an organism composed of a trillion cells, as it is for a society composed of billions of individuals.
The 21st century will not play the old American right wing rules.
This is why China scares them - not the specific actions of the CCP that may be horrible on some people, but the mere existential threat that someone else is being more successful than manifest-destiny Christian America.
So yes, atavists flock to Trump because they are trying to escape the real world.

Though it was probably *politic* of Newsom not to say so, I’m sure a non-trivial portion of those negative approval ratings for President Biden are due, in no small part, to the obsessively negative coverage his Administration has gotten/still gets from most of the “mainstream” media (never minding the relentless smears and hysterical hype from RW media); Karl’s pushing of the “approval ratings” crap is just typical - even if the question is valid one.
Then again, my answer would have been to point out the only place where “approval” really matters is at the voting booth…

Sure, Trump and Biden are old. The similarities end there.
By E.J. Dionne Jr.
The most convenient political habit of the moment is to natter on about how both President Biden and Donald Trump are unpopular and old and how Americans long for some new and energetic candidate (identity to be disclosed later).
This above-the-battle, “woe is us” posture makes those who adopt it look tough-minded, independent and clear-eyed. It puts Biden and Trump on the same level and then compares both with someone who doesn’t yet exist. Never mind that it’s far easier to imagine the perfect candidate than to find one.
This might be harmless if Biden and Trump really were equivalent, but nothing could be further from the truth.

As expected, Boebert faced sharp questions about her decision to move into a new congressional district to escape a rematch with Frisch.
“Could you give the definition of carpetbagger?” Lynch asked Boebert.
Boebert said she is proud to be Weld County’s “newest resident.”

“What stands out about Haley’s remarks is not just that it’s a Republican taking on Trump over sexual misconduct, something that’s almost unheard of since he survived the Access Hollywood tape in 2016. It’s that a top rival is actually addressing the core argument of Trump’s candidacy: That he is the target of a vast conspiracy that stole the last election and is targeting him now in order to steal the next one.”

They are playing for the long term.
Who’s in the White House come Jan 2025 is not as important as controlling the Senate, the House, and all the State offices.
Trump is bad for business, and the Trumping GOP is undermining any ability for them to govern.
The deep pockets know that. They can survive quite well with another 4 years with Biden as President, because they will just try to make sure that in 2026 at least the Senate or House is in (R) control.
Trump is corroding the GOP from the inside.
That’s all he’s ever done. He’s a taker, an abuser.
