So SCOTUS will hear TFGs claims of full immunity.

I hope that SCOTUS rules for TFG. I hope that Biden then invites the SCOTUS to the White House for lunch and shoots Alito, Kegger, and Church Lady through their foreheads, and appoints three new Justices and asks them to review that decision so there *will* be precedent limiting Immunity and yet, Biden will skate because of the interregnum where the original decision gave him unlimited immunity.

Except in this case, it is directly material to the case (or lack thereof)… Phrase it this way: The defense attorney is banging a witness for the defense. That’s a lot more damning than, “Two of the prosecutors are banging each other.”

Especially since they’re coordinating with each other to come up with dirt to disqualify the prosecutors.

Starting the first episode of Payback (2023 Scottish drama) on Britbox. Doing my best to keep my head clean of politics.

Actually took initiative at work today when I noticed something amiss with two of the LOBs using an app I help manage. Spent the next four hours updating terraform scripts and redeploying their autoscaling groups and EC2 instances (72 for one team). Actually enjoyed the whole process of doing shit.

It takes four Justices to grant certiorari. That means there are at least four Justices right now who are willing to hear out arguments the President is above the law. They are Thomas, Alito, Coney Barrett, and Gorsuch for sure. Kavanaugh fucken sucks but his record on the Court is weird, he’s sided with the liberal Justices in quite a few cases.

Personally, I doubt appeals to religious feelings will matter much in our political struggles.

In no small part, fundamentalist religions are about people desperate to remain in control of others.

So someone who is in such a mindset, controlling a woman’s reproductive freedom and controlling immigration are both about the same thing: control.

So I had to explain the origin of cyberpunk (he owns Cyberpunk 2077 ironically… ) in Gibson, Sterling & etc… TPB’d an audiobook of Neuromancer narrated by the man though for him so that’s a win.

Meanwhile he’s snarking on the 3rd largest megacorp making a media on cyberpunk… and there is a certain humor to that I have to admit 😈

Read “Neuromancer” for college, still have the book, though I’ve haven’t cracked it open in ages.

If one reads that book, they’ll see all the influences, pulls, and outright thefts from it in all sorts of media since then, Cyberpunk 2077 being just one of the latest.

Looking for something else entirely and ran into this live version of this song. It’s instructive, I think, to hear it as it was before it became a video, before it became a big hit. When it was simply an exquisite song by an unknown band… This is _why_ it became so big. She’s killer on that bass and that’s not seen in the hit video either, which is a loss.

Long story short, very old friends dad had a small town General Store. Over the years, it was turned into a mini museum. I was visiting another old friend and he was going over and I went with him. First I seen him in years. Just two photos here, I will post more when I get them together. Incredible stuff.

I got a reality check from him: Even after the toe is removed, they still have to get the wound to close and get rid of the infections! Jaysis. We still can’t get over the irony that this started as a result of a walk he took as part of staying healthy. He’s handling it as well as can be expected.

They have done an awesome job even making such an unfilmable show as Foundation worth watching (worried about season 3 with all the production changes). And Silo was unexpectedly good. For All Mankind started a litttle slow and then has become must watch. Severance was amazing, one of the best shows and a must watch. Even See was worth watching, even if somewhat nonsensical (A blind Jason Mamoa in hand to hand combat was fun).

I’m waiting on Constellation. Love the cast. I think I know where it may be going (which could be interesting) or it just might be an 8 episodes of a bad Outer Limits episode. Still on the fence. So I’ll wait for all the episodes to come out so I can binge them if it is good.

Read “Neuromancer” for college, still have the book, though I’ve haven’t cracked it open in ages.

If one reads that book, they’ll see all the influences, pulls, and outright thefts from it in all sorts of media since then, Cyberpunk 2077 being just one of the latest.

I designed a table top RPG based on The Sprawl books. I sent a letter to Ace to tell them about it.

They said to get in touch with Gibson’s agent, and I did. She forwarded my number to Gibson. He called, nice guy, and he thought it was a great idea. But I needed to talk to Mattel™ because they had bought all the gaming rights.

I got in touch with them and they told me if I even thought about continuing the project my great-great-great grandchildren would be paying them damages.

So I redid the project taking out any references to Gibson’s work. Playtested it with friends and they loved it.

Then I went insane and by the time I recovered I couldn’t get the energy back to pick it up. Still have the paper copy. All the computer files have been lost to time.

One of the reviewers I’ve been following for years went on at length during one of his film reviews about the problem with adapting hard scifi. And it boiled down to the same problem as usual: Money. Namely studios today will only invest the sort of money needed to make these films happen unless they’re set to be big-budget summer films. And big-budget films aimed towards the summer months are usually popcorn flicks that are heavy on the action and light on plot so as to get as many people in seats as possible. Thus the only way to get the money is to dumb down the material to the point that you end up with yet another cookie-cutter action flick instead of the faithful adaptation that fans of the original material really wanted. So the people wanting a dumb action flick will pan it, the fans will hate it, and the studio will be afraid to touch anything like it again for a while due to failure to make bank.

You would not tell a white teenage girl to cut her long hair to be back in the classroom, but you have no problem doing that to Darryl George, a young Black man with hair you dislike.

And, of course, the Wall Street Journal’s opinion page is going to back you, a white man in authority as against a “uppity” Black young man. I’m not stupid out here in Arizona.

I think the Democracy Doomsday Clock went to 11:59:00 with SCOTUS taking this case, and effectively leaving the voters the last backstop against Trump, regardless of how they rule.

I am very worried for this nation right now.

I sometimes feel like you do. But I have hope because Joe Biden is exactly the political leader we need right now. He was not a President for 10 years ago. He has the tools we absolutely need to fight Trump now. He is a professional politician in the best sense. He has put together a great team and nothing Trump does surprises him.

I expect he has a string of announcements over the next few months that will turn things around (ie legalization of marijuana, reduction of student loans, border stabilization and many others). His online team has been a tremendous.

He will not win this alone and we have to all do our part. But we do have the tools to defeat them. Trump is not winning like he should. BIden has beaten every poll. Trump cannot raise money. The RNC cannot raise money. Biden sets new records.

He knows exactly what we face and will ask us to help him.

We have gone through periods like this before. They all look inevitable years later but were nail biters when they hapened. Lincoln was not expected to win the 1964 election, because people did not think he could win. McClellan was expected to win and stop the war. The fall of Atlanta in September changed everything.

Their defeat at Midway in 1942 destroyed any real chance for Japan to control the Pacific. But two terrible years ending in the nuclear bombs was still needed. Those two years were horrible even though history now seems to think our victory was inevitable. Same with Germany.

We will either make it through this or humanity fails as a species and eventually falls back to hunter-gatherers. We have the tools to do it. We have the ability to make better decisions using more complex information than they do. They will continue to do stupid shit and we will take advantage.

SO, I still remain confident although I have had to increase the number of dead we will see ebfore it is over.

I often worry the same. But we will only win this if everyone who supports the Constitution gets involved. The three liberal judges took an oath to protect and support the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Writing the equivalent of a LTE is not protecting the US against enemies.

They need to make a choice - America or the institution of the SCOTUS. If they choose the latter, then history will rightly see them as cowardly traitors. If they know that the other six are corruptly delaying things to help Trump, they need to publically say so. Their Judicial oath requires them to speak up. Their Constitutional oath requires the same. If they need to destroy the institution of the SCOTUS to protect democracy, then they need to. I think they are smart enough to accomplish this. I hope ;-)

We have, IMHO, the best leader of the Executive branch to take us successfully through this crisis. We are seeing real and possibly long-term leaders emerge from the Legislative side. Now the Judiciary needs to stand up.

We get through this by ALL branches of the government, along with those of us that support democracy, coming together and push back, legally, with every weapon we have available. We can do this, we have the tools. We make better decisions than they do. We have better access to resources. We can adapt.

They only win if they convince us that we will lose. We win by making them lose. They only win by making us passive in the election. Biden does not just win. We make him win. They only win if they make us fearful. We win by showing true bravery and courage (grace under fire) even when fearful.

Because they are losers. They are passive , they are afraid, and have always turned tail at the first rush of battle.

And we each need to do what we are each capable of to win this. None of us can afford to sit in the stands. At the least we need to be down on the sidelines supporting in any way (as Teddy said) those “actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds.”

We are the fucking Dumbledore’s Army and they are the Death Eaters. We are the goddam Freman and they are the Harkonnen. Our movies, the myths we tell ourselves, show us the way ;-) Figuratively.

Oh, and insisting that the court can trust him to front the remaining $353m+ if they don’t because he’s totally good for it, promise!

Bought this model: amazon.com

It’s …. ok.

For $90 it’s fine.

Seems rather unsubstantial compared to my 40 year old Eureka and I’m not expecting this new one to last that long.

But on first try on some carpet it worked decently.

Assembly instructions are minimal but I figured most of it out.

So I guess I will give it a qualified recommendation, if you’re in the market for such a device.

One would think such a thing is found readily, but for the life of me I can’t find what I seek.

Laptop computer holders won’t work - they are too big.

I thought a desktop note/mail holder might work but most of them are plastic and will not transfer the heat away from the devices (which can get quite warm.)

It’ll do the trick. I spent over $300 on a Dyson that is meh…doesn’t matter as I ripped out all the carpet and we are wall to wall oak now (except a Turkish rug in the living room). Bought a 99 dollar wet/dry floor rubber/sucker on Amazon and use it on occasion. House cleaner does the most with her son on Fridays.

The sale will likely be happening, but not right away.

Bought this model: amazon.com

It’s …. ok.

For $90 it’s fine.

Seems rather unsubstantial compared to my 40 year old Eureka and I’m not expecting this new one to last that long.

But on first try on some carpet it worked decently.

Assembly instructions are minimal but I figured most of it out.

So I guess I will give it a qualified recommendation, if you’re in the market for such a device.

I bought a Hoover Elite II back in 1988 when I got my first apartment in Pittsburgh. Forget what store I got it in. Not a great vacuum* but sufficient for an apartment or small house with an OK selection of tools for crevice and edge cleaning. It mainly sits in the closet now since I have people clean my current apartment. But cleaners have requested to use it also which is fine with me.** Has only broken down twice. One was fixed by replacing a screw that fell out of the frame. And replacing a broken belt.

* - I remember my parent’s Hoover cannister vac since it was one of the designs that hovered on the fan pressure. Sort of futuristic in a way.

** - Depending on the cleaners and location them borrowing my vacuum was a good thing since it lessened the chance of contaminating substances or critters getting from one apartment to another via their equipment. One cleaning company in Philly actually requested it if possible. Also if the cleaners can run two vacuums they get done faster. I also tended to use better dust bags on my vacuum as well.

Goddamned it. McConnell wasn’t some bulwark against MAGA. He was instrumental in preserving GOP power despite Trump and his incompetence. McConnell extended and expanded MAGA power throughout the government, especially by supporting the insurrection by thwarting impeachment of Trump, but also through his support of Trump nominees to the courts - and throwing the SCOTUS to right wing Christian fascists by denying Obama the ability to seat a replacement before the 2016 election.

McConnell knew how to effectively manipulate the powers of the Senate to maximize GOP power and to sabotage Democrats in Congress and the WH. Few have been more effective at tearing down the norms of the Senate than McConnell.

Enough with the goddamned whitewashing of his atrocious legacy. Just because he spoke slowly and deliberately doesn’t mean he also wasn’t an accomplice to Trump and his disastrous agenda.

Trump wouldn’t have gotten the judicial picks without McConnell blocking Obama picks so that Trump would be able to fill far more seats across the judiciary and SCOTUS than otherwise possible.

Where McConnell differs from the rabble rouser insurrectionists in the House is that McConnell wrapped up all of his choices in “procedure”.

Goddamned it. McConnell wasn’t some bulwark against MAGA. He was instrumental in preserving GOP power despite Trump and his incompetence. McConnell extended and expanded MAGA power throughout the government, especially by supporting the insurrection by thwarting impeachment of Trump, but also through his support of Trump nominees to the courts - and throwing the SCOTUS to right wing Christian fascists by denying Obama the ability to seat a replacement before the 2016 election.

Trump wouldn’t have gotten the judicial picks without McConnell blocking Obama picks so that Trump would be able to fill far more seats across the judiciary and SCOTUS than otherwise possible.

I am still skeptical that we will see a brokered convention or even a second ballot. There’s the slight possibility that someone will step in if Trump is actually convicted in any of the criminal proceedings against him. But part of me thinks the GOP base is too far gone and will still nominate him with a conviction.

Honestly, the only way we likely get a brokered convention is the “hamburger from heaven” scenario.

Fitzpatrick is probably the most moderate GOP member of the house. District built around mainly Bucks County (just north of Philadelphia). Most of the suburb counties of Philadelphia have generally been quite conservative, but the GOP hold in these areas have been slipping in the past elections. Fitzpatrick generally has gotten elected +10 points, but the district was Biden +6, Shapiro +10, and Fetterman +7.

This leads me to think that the GOP might well leave him alone since primarying him out for a MAGA extremist would probably cost them the seat in November.

The National Park Service predicted Thursday that D.C.’s cherry blossoms will reach peak bloom from March 23 to March 26.

Peak bloom is defined as the point when 70 percent of the blossoms along the Tidal Basin have flowered. The event attracts droves of tourists and locals to the Tidal Basin — the reservoir on the Mall — every year to visit the flowering trees, which were a gift from Japan in 1912.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival also returns, from March 20 through April 14, with dozens of events around the city to celebrate the city’s famous flower.

I remember a few years back Boston raised their parking ticket rates because the parking tickets were lower than most of the garages so people were just taking the tickets.

YouTube got me through power window motor replacement years ago. Thanks to a video I could be confident that I could take apart the door and swap out the part without any trouble.

Not to mention that doing the work yourself, when done right, saves a lot of unnecessary expense. As I recall, the thermostat part came to about $25, which is a lot cheaper than buying a new fridge (or even a second-hand one: we have a local shop that repairs white goods and sells them, typically with a one-year warranty, and you could pick up a good fridge from ‘em for about $200, delivery included).

A couple of years back, I watched a YouTube tutorial on how to replace a fridge thermostat. Started at the beginning, pause the video, do the work, then continue watching, pause again, etc., etc., until I was done.

Worked great. Also replaced the fridge’s upper and lower compartment door seals using YouTube tutorials.

I’ve done that for working on my car, fixing the vacuum, taking the covers off a washing machine, and a number of other household tasks. It’s been super valuable. One thing I also learned is to take detailed and copious pictures before you begin and as you work. They come in very handy when you can’t figure out how to put things back together again and not have a spare nut or screw. Use lots of lighting to, you know, see things clearly.

Sizz—I’m planning probably later in the year or next to take Amtrak’s Coast Starlight from LA all the way to Seattle, stay a couple days and return back to LA

I did that in 2022 from San Jose to Seattle, Empire Builder to Chicago, and then the California Zephyr to Emeryville, then BART back home. Its a great trip. Just don’t expect to arrive anywhere at the scheduled time.

I’m not sure how many are public in Chicago because when I was there last, some years ago, $20 was the cheapest for downtown.
