WATCH LIVE: President Biden’s 2024 State of the Union Address

Politics • Views: 12,036

President Joe Biden will deliver his State of the Union address March 7 as he gears up for a reelection bid that seems likely to be a rematch with his last election opponent.

Biden has so far won Democratic primary contests in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina by large margins. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has continued to dominate the Republican Party contests, even as he balances campaigning with criminal and civil legal cases, including one focused on attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The president’s biggest annual moment on the national stage is a chance to stress his priorities, make his case for another term, as well as combat headwinds or negative perceptions of his leadership. After Biden speaks, Republicans will counter his arguments with a televised response.

Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama will deliver the Republican response to the State of the Union. Britt is the youngest female senator, at age 41. Nicolas O’Rourke, a councilman from Philadelphia, will give the progressive response.

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) declined to say whether he would vote to protect in-vitro fertilization or codify Roe v. Wade into federal law if Maryland voters send him to the Senate in November, NBC News reports.

Last night, i finished binge watching the first season of the dark comedy, Fargo, first shown in 2014. Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman were absolutely magnificent in it but the body count racked up, mostly by Thornton’s character, was beyond what any series I can recall achieved in just one season (10 shows). From what I have read, season 2 will be even bloodier.

I switched the scheduling code to use ISO 8601 date formats that easily convert to Unix timestamps, so nothing is based on a local time zone and the schedule code works as intended no matter where it’s posted from.

The regular expression to validate ISO 8601 is gnarly.

<?php
function assertISO8601Date($dateStr) {
	if (preg_match('/^([\+-]?\d{4}(?!\d{2}\b))((-?)((0[1-9]|1[0-2])(\3([12]\d|0[1-9]|3[01]))?|W([0-4]\d|5[0-2])(-?[1-7])?|(00[1-9]|0[1-9]\d|[12]\d{2}|3([0-5]\d|6[1-6])))([T\s]((([01]\d|2[0-3])((:?)[0-5]\d)?|24\:?00)([\.,]\d+(?!:))?)?(\17[0-5]\d([\.,]\d+)?)?([zZ]|([\+-])([01]\d|2[0-3]):?([0-5]\d)?)?)?)?$/', $dateStr) > 0) {
		return TRUE;
	} else {
		return FALSE;
	}
}
?>

I remain of the mind that Sanders’s support in 2016 and even in 2020 was more of a protest vote than an actual vote for him. He was the only real anti-establishment choice, and especially in 2016, he was the only even slightly marginally viable alternative to Clinton. I’ve this strange feeling that if it had been Clinton vs Biden in 2016, Sanders never would have got more than 10-15% of the vote in any state.

One of the things about Norther racism vs Southern Racism was that in the North, they segregated neighborhoods but since voting was by neighborhood, they generally didn’t fuck with voting rights though they made sure the right _candidates_ were on the ballots. But keeping them disenfranchised as such wasn’t as important as keeping them out of their neighborhoods.

They could work alongside them, even have them as middle management, but got forbid having them down the block.

That’s basically what a friend said years ago — that in the North, there was no objection to their voting or getting elected to office; the objection was to their moving into the neighborhood, at which point the white residents would sell at a discounted price and flee to a new neighborhood.

black could vote during reconstruction. south carolina’s state house was filled with black representatives at the time. The Klan came about to intimidate blacks from voting. Then reconstruction ended and the Klan and the Red Shirts (under Ben Tillman, for whom Tillman Hall is named) ensured that blacks did not vote again.

Oh, and my brother was released from the hospital an hour ago. He was released to me, then I drove him around to the emergency side of the hospital, where he’d parked his car on February 26 when he went to the ER. I waited until he started his car, because there is nothing like getting to one’s car after it’s been sitting for days and learning that the battery is dead.

He has a PICC line and will be getting infusions of some antibiotic or another for the next six weeks. He was VERY happy to get out of the hospital.

Golly! Ronnie has been presenting himself as a Rear Admiral, retired. Not mentioning that that promotion was rescinded, and he was actually separated from the Navy as a bird Captain (O-6) and not an Admiral (O-7). It cost him a fair amount of retirement pay and a large amount of Agency. Ronnie is a fraud.

Who could have imagined?

black could vote during reconstruction. south carolina’s state house was filled with black representatives at the time. The Klan came about to intimidate blacks from voting. Then reconstruction ended and the Klan and the Red Shirts (under Ben Tillman, for whom Tillman Hall is named) ensured that blacks did not vote again.

In 1870-71, the federal government put some KKKers on trial under the Enforcement Acts, which made the voter intimidation a federal crime. During the trail some very brave Black people testified against the KKKers. In today’s class, we read and discussed some of that testimony. In one of the testimonies, a woman’s husband was killed because he caught a white kid stealing a watermelon and called him out on it. 53 people pleaded guilty and some were convicted in trail. There are just these moments during Reconstruction when I think, what if man.

Trump is ordered to pay legal fees after failed lawsuit over the Steele dossier

LONDON (AP) — Former U.S. President Donald Trump has been ordered to pay a six-figure legal bill to a company founded by a former British spy that he unsuccessfully sued for making what his lawyer called “shocking and scandalous” false claims that harmed his reputation.

A London judge, who threw out the case against Orbis Business Intelligence last month saying it was “bound to fail,” ordered Trump to pay legal fees of 300,000 pounds ($382,000), according to court documents released Thursday.

Been years since I bought a new phone, forgot how much there really is to set up. Add in all the new … “stuff” they’ve added (bloatware that needs uninstalling forex) and deciding how much of the “assistant” tech to actually enable: I’ll start off with a fair bit of it for now just to see if it really is of any assistance.

I do like the folding capability, tucks into my pocket better. I’m slowly getting used to the gestures for the UI and there are actually some semi useful widgets these days. The little screen on the front when it’s closed is actually big enough to be useful - the reviewers seem to think it needs to be as big as the ones on the really expensive phones but not for me.

I wasn’t sure if wireless recharging would be a gimmick but I like having a specific place to a) put the phone down when I get home and know where it is and know it’s charging at the same time.

The camera, eh, who cares. I have too many real cameras to care. It will more than suffice for what little I use a phone camera for.

OTOH, the screen is nice, my games and music play well. Better CPU/memory performance, 2x storage & good battery life though the last phone had excellent battery performance so we’ll see on that.

First few days? 9/10 easily.

Marcy Wheeler on why Garland doesn’t deserve the criticism for the time it has taken to get people prosecuted (but he should be blamed for Hur’s selection):

Plus, investigating Trump was like investigating a very corrupt law firm. According to a filing from Jack Smith, “at least 25 witnesses withheld information, communications, and documents based on assertions of the attorney-client privilege under circumstances where the privilege holder appears to be the defendant or his 2020 presidential campaign.” Some of these witnesses are obvious — and central to the plot to steal the election: Giuliani, John Eastman and Kenneth Chesebro were all described as co-conspirators. Several lawyers worked for Giuliani — people such as Christina Bobb and Jenna Ellis. Others worked for the campaign, or participated in state-level conspiracies or lawsuits.

Regardless of the witnesses’ level of involvement, the Justice Department had no choice: Such privileges must be protected or prosecutors risk blowing the entire case. This process could add much as a year to the investigation of any lawyer’s communications.

Even for witnesses who weren’t lawyers, Trump’s executive privilege claims created delays. For example, the Justice Department’s fight to secure former Vice President Mike Pence’s testimony started no later than July 2022, well before Smith’s appointment, with Pence’s top aides. It continued at least until April 2023, when Pence testified. Even seemingly obvious actions Trump took, such as the tweet he sent targeting Pence while rioters were storming the Capitol, required working through such privilege challenges to prove that Trump, and not someone else, sent the tweet.

Finally, Trump’s co-conspirators plotted their attack on encrypted apps. At a minimum, Trump’s associates planned their activities on Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, HushMail, and ProtonMail. Barring fully cooperative witnesses, such communications require investigators to seize phones, often one after another, to reconstruct communications.

The delays created by Covid, use of encryption, attorney-client and executive privilege claims were unavoidable, even for the most obvious evidence. Take the tweet Trump sent at 2:24 p.m. Jan. 6: “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage.” It was right there in public! But to present that in court first required the exploitation of at least two phones, nine months of fights over executive privilege, a 23-day stall from Twitter and two sets of interviews with at least eight different top aides.

One delay that was unnecessary was caused by some of the people who most loudly blamed Garland: the Jan. 6 Committee. DOJ first asked the committee for witness transcripts in April 2022. That June, prosecutors in the trial of leaders of the Proud Boys agreed to reschedule their trial from August until December because the committee would not release transcripts until September. The prosecutors were vindicated when those transcripts finally came out in December, after three additional months of delay and jury selection had already started. Twice during the trial, prosecutors learned that witnesses had told the committee something they hadn’t told the FBI; in one instance, a committee transcript revealed an attorney conflict that threatened prosecutors’ reliance on testimony from their most important cooperating witness. Given that court filings suggest Smith will treat the Proud Boys akin to co-conspirators when this case finally goes to trial, those are the kinds of unnecessary screw-ups that could jeopardize Trump’s trial itself.

The only impactful action Biden could take would be to cut military aid.

Reagan did it in 1981.

Been down for nearly two hours, which is perfect given that the Tangerine Traitor apparently planned to do a whole thing on it while Joe was speaking.

Over on Twitter, the CW has switched quickly from “he’s too old” to “he’s too vigorously partisan.”

Uncle Joe sounds effing fantastic tonight. On point. Approchable. Sharp as a new razor. That’s the guy I want to talk to Putin, Netanyahu, Zelensky. To the GOP leadership.

On NBC, I caught one of the commenter talking about his age, and how Biden was contrasting his vision with others his age. She noted that he was referring to Trump’s age, but then pivoted back to talking about how Biden has to deal with his age.

Biden is not going to embarass Bibi or make it seem like he is interfering in Israeli internal politics. If Bibi does not get the hint, Biden will smack him but in private.

dealing with this volatile situation with all its cross cutting issues is like jenga

Pundits switch to noting the speech was “overtly political.”

Well, who delayed it until the start of campaign season?

Theses a very real chance that we lose Michigan because of this, and that means we lose the white house.

What would embarrassing Netanyahu in public accomplish?

Harris met with Benny Gantz on Monday , an Israeli opposition member and centrist. Reports are that Benny was suprised at just how angry the WH is about Bibi. Gantz is beginning to emerge as the man who could replace Bibi. Benny is working hard at this. And Biden is making sure that a Rafah offensive will not be taken well by the US. Biden still has a lot of leverage to try and stop Bibi but I expect much of this will be behind closed doors. I think it is likely that Bibi may be out in a few months.

The primary was a protest vote. They know what’s coming if Trump wins.
