Music • Views: 13,180

Live Tonight on Millennium Stage: “Of all the vocal-driven ensembles in the world of contemporary music there is none as compelling or beckoning as Banda Magda.”
—World Music Report

Like a shoreline scintillating in the distance, New York’s Banda Magda blurs distinctions and suggests wonders.

Even if you don’t speak any of the six languages they sing in, you are still transported into beautiful imagery with tales of love and devotion, as strong as the bonds between the band’s diverse musicians.

Led by firecracker performer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda is a community. Their camaraderie shines with cross-pollinating melody and rhythm. The rotating madcap fellowship has traveled to more than 22 countries in five continents, playing renowned rooms and festivals such as L’Olympia Bruno Coquatrix, WOMAD, Apollo Hammersmith, the Kennedy Center, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Festival International de Montreal, and more. They combine whirlwind tours of music, invigorating transformative workshops, and magical interactive moments led by Magda’s uncanny ability to engage the audience.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan didn’t flinch when guilty Jan. 6 participant Antony Vo claimed he was convicted in a “kangaroo court.” She reportedly sentenced him to nine months.

“I’ve been called worse,” she reportedly said, according to a lengthy thread posted by CBS News’ Scott MacFarlane.

Chautkan is also presiding over former President Donald Trump’s federal election subversion criminal case which is on ice pending a Supreme Court determination on his absolute immunity claims.

In a testy exchange, Macfarlane recounts how 31-year-old Vo’s defense attempted to push forward a narrative that in no way did he violate any conditions of his release when he attended a Jan. 6 protest outside a D.C. lockup.

Chutkan shot back, “Are you serious?”

Instead, Vo’s defense tried to explain the event Vo attended as not so much a protest but a “prayer vigil.”

Macfarlane noticed when the defense tries to interject, Chutkan “buries her face in her hands [sic] in apparent frustration.”

Chutkan clarified that Vo wasn’t at a “prayer session at the D.C. jail, but singing in support for those in pretrial detention for violent crimes.”

Politico’s Kyle Cheney also noticed that Chutkan “seemed totally unmoved” to make ‘common cause’ with those who call the most violent J6 defendants “hostages” while officers testified to “nearly being killed that day.”

Explosive device is thrown onto porch of the Satanic Temple in Salem, Massachusetts, spurring federal and local probe

Police and an FBI joint terrorism task force are investigating after an explosive device was thrown onto the porch of The Satanic Temple in Salem, Massachusetts, early Monday, authorities said.

No one was in the building when the explosive was thrown just after 4 a.m., but staff arrived in the afternoon to find the device and discover the building had been damaged, Salem police said in a news release.

State police bomb technicians cleared the device and explosives detection dogs swept the area for any other devices, police said. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also assisted. Details about the damage weren’t immediately released.

The Satanic Temple said it was unable to comment due to the ongoing investigation by the Salem Police Department and the FBI, according to a statement posted Tuesday on Facebook.

As I noted a few days ago, cocoa prices are up, I paid $8 for an 8oz container of Hershey’s cocoa powder.

In my protein drinks I use chocolate as the flavor, and for many years I’ve used the Ghirardelli chocolate drink mix. It used to be called “Sweet Ground Chocolate and Cocoa”, but recently the name “Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate & Cocoa Sweet Ground Powder”.

It is not bitter dark, rather it’s just a sweet chocolate powder. A commenter on Amazon was surprised that sugar was the first ingredient, and yes it is a sweet drink mix.

But it’s also got a fair amount of chocolate and cocoa in it. And to my taste buds it is better than the usual mass market cocoa mixes one finds in the grocery store. Including the Starbucks brand of cocoa mix, which is priced at several times the Ghirardelli.

I bring this up here because today Amazon dropped the price of a 3lb container to just $13.80, a deal when one looks at the plain cocoa powder prices.

Given the way cocoa production is going with climate problems in Ghana and elsewhere, I don’t know if these low prices will last long.

Chocolate lovers: we got to hoard while we can!

While we complain about Fox News being the most prominent disinformation outlet in the US, down under it is Murdoch’s Sky News Australia which is even worse.

Yes, even worse.

Australians are a strange bunch.

The campaign that Sky News Australia has against anything to do with climate change is quite something. Not a day goes by when they miss posting videos declaring anything to do with mitigation as some sort of extremism by crazies.

Murdoch is clearly doing the bidding of the coal lobby in Australia.

And Australia is doing even worse than the US at addressing carbon footprint. Per capita they emit more CO2 than the US.

We should not forget that Murdoch is Australian by origin.

Never ever forget that what we’re seeing today, is part of the endgame that folks like R.J. Rushdoony and Gary North strategized as part of their Dominionist takeover of US government almost a half century ago. Those seeds planted in the far-right Christian movement have borne fruit in the Christian Nationalist movement (which has at its heart the white nationalist Identity Christian sect), and their goal of enacting Project 2025 overtly states its goal of purging a large percentage of the American people from society, and stripping rights from anyone who oppose them. They told us exactly what they were after, and unfortunately not enough people believed them.

In their own words.

I’m also into daily protein drinks and mention this because chocolate is the flavor I want nothing to do with but hasn’t always been this way.
My flavor of choice is Vanilla Ice Cream. The product is (Gold Standard 100% Whey) that I mix into a glass of Almond Milk. It provides 24grams of protein daily. They do make a chocolate version that I ignore…but I’m sure it’s quite good tasting.
Nutrition is important and I jazz-up my protein drink with a tbsp of Chia seeds and Vitamin C powder.
Wishing you good health and plentiful chocolate.

Fuck the IRS. After the bank I work for went belly up last year, my ESPP stock portfolio went straight into the toilet. My capital loss for 4+ years of contributions was about 30K. The IRS lets me write off $3,000 of that and defers the other 26,900 to next year, where I get to write off another 3K? Is that how this works?

Meanwhile, my dad’s IRA which I used to put a down payment on a house counts as untaxed income? All of it at once?

Looks like I’m on the hook for six figures this year. Holy fuck. And I haven’t even started on my state taxes.

I believe the rule is that you can write off the loss to the extent that it is less than your capital gains for the year; but if the loss exceeds gains, you can write off only up to $3,000 of the excess loss.
