Some More News: Are Smartphones Bad For Us?

Technology • Views: 12,129

Hi. Today, we’re digging into all the research around smartphone and social media use, especially among teens. Do they cause depression and alienation? Or is this all an overblown moral panic? Or… a confounding third thing, where it’s a little of both?

Johnson should threaten to pull a McCarthy and resign from the House if he’s ousted. See if the Republicans are crazy enough to cut their margin in half.

Ron DeSantis Signs Florida Bill Limiting How Close Bystanders Can Get to Police

The legislation, Senate Bill 184, makes it a second-degree misdemeanor to approach within 25 feet of a first responder after receiving a verbal warning to stay away. The law includes a requirement of intent to interfere, threaten, or harass the first responder who is in the course of his duties.

It also prohibits harassment of first responders. The law defines harassment as conduct “which intentionally causes substantial emotional distress in that first responder and serves no legitimate purpose.”

Conservatives belief the powerful are the only protected class.

Except the sabotage favors the GOP because it means nothing gets done while the House GOP fight amongst themselves to deny aid to our allies and do the basic work of government. They refuse to legislate or govern. They keep making this explicit in their own conduct. Johnson making the threat actually delays further action on these key items, and inures a benefit to the fascist/authoritarian MAGA wing of GOP.

And it’s a tossup between Joe Manchin or Anthony Cuomo as to which Democratic politician has created the most havoc in the Democratic party agenda.

Backlash from latchkey kids would be my guess.

I was talking to my mom the other day and she was saying my brother asked if she could watch the grandkids a couple days this week because they are off school. She was saying how exhausting it is because it isn’t like when we were kids and she could just tell us to go outside and play. She is afraid if she isn’t there watching them the whole time someone will call the police.

re: #11 BeenHereAwhile

Hands down: Cuomo.

My case against Cuomo: He put judges on the court of appeals in the state that pushed more conservative takes on outcomes, including redistricting. His actions re: redistricting lost the House for Democrats (losing seats in NY meant losing the House). We’re still litigating this in 2024 and the redistricting may result in a net gain in 2024. This cannot be understated, given that the House GOP have absolutely screwed the pooch on everything they touched.

Manchin’s (and you can throw in Sinema for good measure) are typical “mavericky” politicians who revel in the belief that they are mavericks and can do more independent actions, even though it undermines the party’s ability to get things done for the nation.

GOP has no identifiable high crimes or misdemeanors against Mayorkas. They just want to get a scalp, and Democrats are using the same mechanisms that the GOP did to thwart Trump’s impeachment.

Mind you, the evidence against Trump was and remains overwhelming. Mayorkas? Not so much, considering the same GOP blocked a border security bill that GOPers in the Senate negotiated with the WH over.

The formula that was used when we were in Vietnam was made in a factory from Eastern Europe. It had more sugar than milk solids in it. It was a slow process weaning my son from it to the expensive western formula we brought with us from the US - one we only realized needed to be a slow process when we got a few bellys full back in our laps because it didn’t sit well with him at first. So, yeah, it really doesn’t surprise me that Nestle would do that - all the other formula sold there is like that so they’re just matching the extant market. Not saying it’s good for the babies, but I’ll bet most of the moms wouldn’t know any better there either.

And all of this presumes that the formula can be made with appropriate sanitation…

Senate Dismisses Mayorkas Impeachment

Baseball star Steve Garvey plagued by tax debt as he pursues GOP Senate run

Steve Garvey, once a Major League Baseball first baseman, and his various businesses have been named in more than 40 tax liens totaling about $3.85 million in federal and state taxes, according to Politico’s reporting on county records.

“Twelve of Garvey’s federal tax liens totaled more than $3.2 million since 1994,” Politico reported. “Much of the rest of the debt in Garvey’s name, about $575,000, was in state tax liens. Six of the state tax liens were executed between June 2018 and October 2023 that total more than $250,000 and the Los Angeles and Riverside county records show they haven’t been satisfied.”

Bill Barr Says He’ll Vote for Trump

despite having previously criticized Trump’s conduct while in office and comparing him to a “defiant, 9-year-old kid,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Barr: “I’ve said all along, given two bad choices, I think it’s my duty to pick the person I think would do the least harm to the country, and in my mind, that’s — I will vote the Republican ticket.”

—————

“Given all Trump has done, and given all we know, the claim that Joe Biden—whatever his failures, whatever his limitations, whatever his age—poses a greater threat to the republic than Donald Trump is delusional.” - Peter Wehner, who worked in Reagan, GHW Bush, and GW Bush administrations.

That was a murder. That asshole with the gun wasn’t scared, he was enjoying what he was doing to her.

Lock him up for the rest of his pathetic life.

he was actively being a threat
he had the only gun
he was not defending or protecting himself or trying to get away
he was advancing on the other party who was retreating

Is Barr delusional, or is he a lying fascist crook with no loyalty to the United States, just like the other Trumpanzees?

Barr is human garbage.

I doubt if he’ll spend a day in prison. I’ve seen this movie before. It’s called “Zimmerman Getting Away With Murdering Trayvon Martin”. But hopefully I’m wrong.

I still need to make the first cut here. Need to plug the mower in charge the battery for the electric starter first though.

I’ve got the weedwhacker battery plugged in. I’ll do that tomorrow.

Apple gives For All Mankind another season and a Soviet spin-off, Star City

Great news for dads and dads at heart: For All Mankind is returning for another season. The alt-history series from Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi, which is being called a “hit” by Apple TV+’s publicity department, will blast off for another season of soviet espionage, interplanetary union drives, and some of the best old-age makeup Apple can buy. The renewal comes roughly four months after the show’s fourth season wrapped, so it doesn’t seem like Apple was too eager to give it another shot. Or, we would assume, if the streamer wasn’t going deeper into For All Mankind’s timeline.

Apple also announced a new spin-off series called Star City, which will focus on “the other side of the space race.” Billed as a “paranoid thriller,” Star City will go back in the timeline to the Soviet victory in the space race. It sounds like the show will run a similar course as For All Mankind but from the Soviet perspective. In a statement, Wolpert and Nedivi said, “The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story.” Sounds good to us because For All Mankind rules, and if Apple wants to keep funding this ludicrous, thrilling, and deeply sincere show, then we’re happy to keep giving them our eyeballs. Not really, but as viewers. They have our attention.

(We just want to reiterate that we don’t want Apple to take our eyeballs because we need those to watch For All Mankind.)

His life expectancy is about 6 years. They kick people out at his age to save the medical burden.

Probably not when you’ve just murdered someone, so are clearly a danger to the community.

Trump campaign tells GOP candidates he’s taking a cut of their cash if they use his name

At least 5% of any candidate that says “Trump”. And if they give more, he will look more favorably on suppodting them. WHat a racket.

Ah, he just wants to wet his beak a little. If Good Fellas has taught us anything, it’s that giving the boss a cut of your haul is beneficial to your long term health.

Well before he met Trump, he was a lying fascist crook with no loyalty to the United States but only to the GOP. He has an undeserved reputation as an institutionalist. His behavior concerning the Mueller report, when he first issued a summary that mischaracterized the findings, certainly proves that he cares nothing about truth or justice.
