I really want to believe MAGA Mike isn’t going to throw some monkey wrench into this at the last minute to stop it. Ukraine desperately needs this aid.

My worry is that this is too little, too late. The best we can hope for is that releasing massive stocks of artillery and HIMAARS might stall the Russian advances that have been relentlessly pushing Ukrainians back on all fronts.

Ukraine needs men, not just weapons. There *is* however evidence that increasing numbers of foreign nationals are being found on the front lines. I’m too old, or I’d be there, in whatever the modern equivalent of the Lincoln Brigade is.

I don’t understand why they don’t issue a general mobilization. They’re facing an existential threat. Zelensky and the Rada balked at drafting 500k when they should be drafting double that.

I don’t think it’s too little, too late…it would have been better to approve this aid 6 months ago (we’d probably still have about 45 billion left - it’s a shit ton of money). And with a renewed effort (assuming the smarter minds in the country have been lining up shipments in advance of funding), Ukraine will regain some control over key points on the front.

Then, assuming Democrats take the house and hold the Senate and WH, another 120 billion in aid will sail through next January which will enable a spring/summer offensive to retake Crimea. I think the GOP has set the Ukraine defense effort back about a year with this garbage.

Putin’s minions in the House will definitely privilege a motion to vacate if he brings up a clean bill, but I think enough Democrats will vote for him in return for a clean Ukraine Bill to keep him in the Chair. He may feel he has no choice but bring it because Republicans who aren’t on Putin’s payroll are saying they will sign a discharge petition if he doesn’t.

No more peremptory strikes, so unless the prospective alternates self-disqualify with their answers or give enough reason to be dismissed for cause, they’ll have the last 5 before the end of the day.

Committees will still be fucked up as they’re stacked with whackos, but Republicans looking to get reelected in competitive districts have an opportunity to save their skins now that most of their primaries are over.

I have a suspicion that the reason they haven’t done it is because logistically, they can’t handle that many troops. can’t keep them fed. can’t keep them in ammunition. can’t train them. Otherwise, I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t be cranking out division after division of men. I mean, if for no other reason, modern armies require gobs of soldiers who don’t even fight but just sit in the rear keeping materiel moving to the front lines. The U.S. army presumably uses what? Maybe 3 fighters to 7 folks in the back making sure MASH units are staffed, helicopters get their hydraulics flushed on the proper schedule, etc.

Yeah: I dunno about that Discharge Petition: that it has gotten all but 20 or so Dems to sign was a good thing, but AFAICR, only one Republican did (Ken Buck, as a parting “FU”), and those 20 D holdouts are - to best of my knowledge - the leftmost caucus, and unwilling to push the Senate bill over the aid to Israel in it. Also, it doesn’t seem like too many, if any, House GOPers are truly willing to buck the Party Line (viz. the Mayorkas impeachment embarrassment), especially in an election year.

Charlie Kirk-linked GOP lawmaker ends re-election bid after complaint he forged signatures

Far-right Arizona state Rep. Austin Smith is ending his re-election bid after being caught forging petition signatures to qualify for the ballot.

According to Yvonne Wingett Sanchez of The Washington Post, “State Rep. Austin Smith (R) — who was senior director at Turning Point Action, the campaign arm of Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA — was accused by a Democratic activist of submitting petition sheets with rows of voter names, addresses and signatures that ‘bear a striking resemblance’ to Smith’s handwriting, according to a complaint. Smith ‘personally circulated multiple petition sheets bearing what appear to be forged voter signatures,’ the complaint said.”

After the complaint was submitted to the Arizona secretary of state and attorney general, “Smith submitted his resignation to Turning Point Action on Thursday, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk about it publicly. Smith also publicly ended his reelection campaign,” according to the report.

Yeah, they started the day going from 7 to 5 with one quitting and one getting booted, then picked up 8 more. The fact that Trump’s team is out of peremptory strikes helps…of the next half dozen or so prospects, only those who exhibit strong bias one way or the other will get rejected. It’s entirely possible that the first five will get seated and we’ll be done selecting alternates before lunch. Honestly, with the tampering we can expect from Trump’s extended team (including Fox News), they should have 18 alternates.

What could possibly go wrong?

Over 30 years ago my husband and I traveled to Hawaii and took a helicopter ride over Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park that gave us a spectacular view of the active volcano. There were signs all around the area barring visitors from hiking anywhere nearby — but we saw about 4 (?) people standing right near the crater. According to the pilot they were geologists working at the park and knew exactly what they were doing. The helicopter offered a much better view than the small planes for tourists — but let’s just say that after about 20 minutes I realized that this was not a ride I would ever take again courtesy of the attendant motion sickness.

House Republican cites threats and swatting of family as reasons for quitting

Mike Gallagher has suggested that he is resigning from his seat in Congress because of death threats and swatting targeted at his family.

The Republican US representative for Wisconsin shared more insight into his decision to vacate his seat while talking with reporters on Tuesday, the NBC affiliate WLUK reported.

Gallagher, 40, said: “This is more just me wanting to prioritize being with my family … I signed up for the death threats and the late-night swatting, but they did not. And for a young family, I would say this job is really hard.”

“…The request came as NATO’s Deputy General Secretary Mircea Geoana held talks in Brussels on regional security challenges with visiting Argentine Defense Minister Luis Petri.

Geoana said he welcomed Argentina’s bid to become an accredited partner in the alliance — a valued role short of “ally” for nations that are not in NATO’s geographical area and not required to take part in collective military actions.”
apnews.com

NATO Nations, by the North Atlantic Treaty, have to be in North America, Europe, Turkey, or in the Atlantic north of the Tropic of Cancer. NATO Partners can be anywhere, but they can’t vote or trigger Article 5 or any of the other privileges. It’s helpful, though, since the partners work with NATO Nations to interoperate their forces and cooperate on various security programs.

Some of the active partners are Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, who are obviously nowhere near the North Atlantic but want to be involved, mainly because China is a threat. Sweden and Finland were partners, so were already most of the way there in terms of integration once they became NATO Allies.

Well, fuck. I seriously underestimated Bibi’s bloodthirstiness. I guess we’re in for another full-on war in the Middle East. The more things change, etc., etc.

Netanyahu will gladly drag us into a wider war. I am convinced that he and his inner circle and his coalition in their Parliament are hell bent on something that will only end badly.

Hopefully the good people of Israel will force a change, and soon.
