I like Joe Biden. What he has done with international politics, allies and foes alike has been remarkable. The economy could have run off of a cliff after Covid and he saved it, we are doing better than any other major country by far. We were in unchartered territory and his folks got us through it better than any other country on the planet.

The US is in better shape across the world than it has been in a long time, our country is stronger. Look at the numbers. The press has a job to do and they shouldn’t act like there is a level playing field between Biden and Trump.

And this just popped up on Raw Story

‘You were in charge’: Jim Jordan gets shredded by MAGA after latest Trump case statement

rawstory.com

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) may be one of Donald Trump’s top elected allies, but the former president’s supporters appear to be holding a grudge against the conservative lawmaker, based on their response to his last statement.

Jordan, who has been called out for “hypocritical” comments in the past, took to social media on Saturday to support Trump in his efforts to battle the legal system in several criminal cases.

“Indicting former chiefs of staff and lawyers for President Trump is banana republic craziness,” Jordan said, likely referencing a recent indictment in Arizona.

He then asked, “What happened to our country?”

Jordan got the typical insults from the left, but he also got a dose from Trump supporters and self-proclaimed conservatives.

@GuntherEagleman, a MAGA political commentator, said, “Our [House GOP] has no f——— b—— whatsoever is what happened.”

@DogRightGirl, who describes herself as “America First,” also chimed in:

“Imagine if you were in a position of power to do anything about it….. Keep posting on X. That seems to be working.”

Ohio lawyer Tom Renz, who has accused Hunter Biden of creating COVID-19, also had words for Jordan.

“Our elected officials sold out instead of standing for us. Instead of standing for good legislation they compromised with the dems and refused to hold the sellouts accountable. Instead of taking actions they held hearings,” he said on Saturday. “Instead of telling truth they lie for lobbyists. And worst, instead of listening to the people they are supposed to represent they stand for big money that puts its own interests ahead of those of the American people. Any other questions?”

Trump-supporting MAGA activist Cynthia Holt also weighed in.

“Thankfully we got another sternly written tweet from Jim. I’ll sleep much better tonight,” she said.

Jack Grodeska, a former TV host and conservative independent, said the GOP operatives charged “committed crimes.”

“You’re up next, Insurrectionist,” he then added. “Remember, Donald never gave you your preemptive pardon. If SCOTUS agrees to Trump’s presidential immunity grift, that means Joe Biden sends you to a black ops site with all of your Congressional insurrectionist co-conspirators. Have a great weekend.”

@jayrosen_nyc ‘s “not the stakes, but the odds” mantra: “Move past the horse race numbers and the gotcha moments and the distractions, the sideshows, that have come come to dominate and sensationalize our politics. And focus on what’s actually at stake.”

Biden directly appealed to the hundreds of journalists in attendance: “I think in your hearts you know what’s at stake. The stakes couldn’t be higher. Every single one of us has a role to play, a serious role to play, in making sure democracy endures.”

Shame on me for watching it. Jost made a funny line about single people watching the WHCA Dinner live on CSPAN on a Saturday night being found days later with their cats already eating them. (lol, too close to home)

So when it was announced the other day that the technician had finished installing new security cameras both in and outside the building, I sarcastically responded that it wasn’t going to really make a difference. It would make guests feel “safe,” but as soon as somebody’s car got broken into and the cops told us they couldn’t make use of the blurry camera footage, we’d be back where we started.

Then yesterday, I learned that some asswipe had busted the lock on the maintenance shed out back and stolen our pressure washer, I reiterated my belief that we might never catch the prick.

So I get in tonight…to find out the cops caught his ass this afternoon. Bonus points, he and his friends were staying here under false names. AND they had additional reservations in the system under different names.

Why yes, I am deciding how I want that plate of crow cooked, why do you ask?/////

Oh my! The Montana Soap Opera continues!

Busted: GOP Senate candidate Tim Sheehy reportedly hired staffer who promoted racist posts

Republican businessman Tim Sheehy, who is running for U.S. Senate in Montana, reportedly hired a staffer whose social media account liked and shared racist posts.

The Daily Beast on Saturday published an exclusive piece alleging that the candidate “hired a campaign staffer with social media accounts and public statements emblematic of the fringe far right.”

“At first glance, Caleb Oriet’s social media accounts look typical of a young member of the fringe, online right, featuring likes and reposts of far-right influencers and white nationalists expressing incendiary and bigoted views about racial and religious minorities,” the report states, noting that Oriet is a self-proclaimed “Anglo-Saxon Protestant” as well as a “menace to society.”

The account belonging to the 21-year-old Montanan and self-proclaimed “Anglo-Saxon Protestant” and “menace to society” liked, for instance, a tweet that refers to Black Americans as “the most criminal, dependent, and socially destructive part of the population” and attacks GOP efforts to connect with Black voters.

But Oriet isn’t just a denizen of the far-right fringes of social media. He’s also a staffer for one of the Republican Party’s top candidates to flip control of the U.S. Senate this year.

ccording to Federal Election Commission filings, Oriet is being paid by the campaign of Tim Sheehy, who is running against Sen. Jon Tester (D) in Montana. Since January, he has collected five paychecks, totaling $8,313.

Sheehy—a charismatic former Navy SEAL turned wealthy businessman—is preparing for a bruising face-off against Tester in what’s gearing up to be one of the most competitive Senate elections in the country. As Republicans try to retake the Senate majority, top GOP campaign brass is throwing their weight behind Sheehy as their best shot to defeat an incumbent Democrat.

Oriet’s apparent views clearly undercut that mission. Beyond his social media activity, he espoused hard-right, Christian Nationalist views during public presentations, a media interview, and an effusive comment on a book written by a Nazi-supporting Italian fascist thinker.

After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, for instance, Oriet took aim at the fact that “20.5 percent of Gen-Z says they’re gay” in an interview with a local Montana newspaper, given in his capacity as the leader of Montana’s chapter of the American Populist Union. (The APU is a group founded by Gen Z conservatives that is openly supportive of the neo-Nazi Nick Fuentes.)

“The political implications of this are disastrous,” Oriet told The Great Falls Tribune of the statistic. “As people my age start taking power, it’s just not going to be a good thing.”

Oriet may be emblematic of a new breed of very online, very young conservatives who are seeking to push the GOP toward their extreme views by embracing trollish tactics and provocation.

But mainstream Republicans have taken pains to reject that movement and its figures, like Fuentes, who they see as politically toxic. Sheehy has run so far as a mainstream, Trump-allied conservative who is trying to defeat a well-liked, moderate Democrat in a politically idiosyncratic state.

Within an hour of The Daily Beast reaching out to Oriet and Sheehy’s campaign for comment on Friday, every post on Oriet’s X account had been deleted. His X and Instagram biographies were also wiped.

- An unlocked desk drawer in Trump’s private office
- And a storage room whose door could be defeated by a bobby-pin

But it’s all good because he left “standing orders” that nobody knew about and nobody can find a copy of saying that anything he took with him to MAL was automatically “declasssified.” And even if you don’t believe that, you can’t charge him with anything because “TOTAL IMMUNITY!!!”

For tonight’s Seder one of our friends stopped at a Russian store in the Sunset and brought a gefilte fish that had been shaped into a log and wrapped in the fish skin…holy fuck that shit was good…I cut it into half inch thick slices and put a couple of sliced carrots on top and then we ate it with the horseradish she grated herself…and boy let me tell you, horseradish done right has some kick. It’s always fun watching the younger people react to the sudden clearing of all airways including ones they didn’t know they had behind their brain. I probably ate a half cup of that - the straight white stuff and the slightly sweeter beet juice mixed (which had more heat this year)…

Also, my chopped chicken liver got full approval from all of the authentic Jews…there was none left at the end of the night…and my matzo ball soup also got a good review…everyone loved feasting on my balls!
Kept it simple as there were so many dishes from others…just broth, carrot and matzo ball with a garnish of fresh sorrel for bitterness. My friend Charles made the homemade matzo for the seder…it fuckin’ rocks.

And yes, the 2009 Motrachet is still fuckin’ one of the best wines you can drink…if you can find it…our host bought several cases a few years back.

It’s marathon weekend. We’ve been sold out for weeks. Got a sign on the door - BIG SIGN - saying “SOLD OUT” but I still get idiots stopping and asking how much for a room for tonight. Sheesh.

I really really wish we had one of the old time neon “no vacancy” signs at the parking lot entrance on days like today.

OTOH I’ll get a full house bonus for tonight 👍

A Tesla owner has been charged with vehicular homicide after his car—traveling in autopilot mode—slammed into a motorcyclist when he got distracted looking at his cellphone, according to Washington court records.

Police say that Carl Hunter, 56, was driving his 2022 Model S last Friday afternoon when the vehicle rear-ended a motorcycle on State Route 522 near Snohomish, a city 35 miles north of Seattle.

The collision killed Jeffrey Nissen, a 28-year-old construction worker who was on his way home. When cops arrived at the crash scene, the Tesla sedan was atop the motorcycle “with a male rider laying next to the Tesla’s driver rear side.”

A GoPro camera that had been attached to Nissen’s helmet was seized by police.

During questioning, Hunter said he was driving home and “looked down at his cell phone while the vehicle was rolling forward on auto pilot.” Adding that he was “distracted by his phone,” Hunter said that “the next thing he knew there was a bang and the vehicle lurched forward as it accelerated and collided with the motorcycle in front of him.”

“The Tesla became lodged on top of the motorcycle and was unable to be removed in time,” a Washington State Patrol trooper noted.

Last place I worked actually did have a “No Vacancy” sign outside, though there were still plenty of people who’d turn up at o’dark thirty and ask me if there was any chance that we might have a room available. And when I answered in the negative beg me to take down their info “just in-case someone cancels.”

Of course, the GM was so money-hungry that he actually started telling us to keep the sign turned off on sold-out nights until everybody checked in because there might be a last minute cancellation and he didn’t want to lose out. So instead of one or two people an hour in the middle of the summer, we were getting half a dozen in an hour plus the phone ringing every five minutes only to tell every one of them that we had no rooms available.

If you do go elsewhere, AirB&B your home/apartment and pay for your vacation and probably some extra profit.

Not joking. There are nice houses in Hayward that rent during Birkebeiner Ski Race week for up to $5000/week for 2br/1bath. You probably won’t get that much from the Swifties but you’ll match the good hotels easily.

TL:DR - Rewatched it tonight. The Mummy is a more perfect movie than Raiders of the Lost Ark. Prove me wrong.
________

Okay, just rewatched it tonight. Who is with me that The Mummy with Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Oded Fehr, Arnold Vosloo and especially Kevin O’Connor may be a more perfect movie than Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Remember the meme that Raiders of the Lost Ark would end the same way without Indy at all? No way would the Mummy have ended the same way without every one of these actors.)

It’s horrors are more horrifying (tongues being cut off; eyes being cut out;, zombie egyptions crawling along the walls; and those scarabs crawling under the skin stlll creep me out), its mass action scenes more full of cool action (the opening French Legionaire battle with the on rushing Arabs at Hamunaptra is still one of the coolest. Rick goes through about 4-5 different weapons. He is ready for it all.). It’s comedy is more fun (the one shot of Evie knocking down all the library shelves around the entire room; Evie stepping over the unconscious body of her brother to talk with Rick in prison; Beni running through all the religious symbols and original languages to stop Imhotep, until he hits on the language of the slaves, who we all saw building the city of Hamunaptra in the opening sequences), its jump scares really work (parts of undead bodies arising from the ground to continue fighting) and the CGI still works well, even while the practical effects are tremendous.

Evie, IMHO, is a better heroine than Marion. She is smart, passionate and great under pressure, even if her knowledge is mostly book-learned. Ricky is both brave and goofy, with his own intelligence and charm. He never disrespects Evie, especially in the temple where her expertise is critical. Her brother may be greedy but he always does the right thing when it matters and can handle himself well in a fight

Hell, we even have sympathy at moments for Imhotep who only loved the wrong person too deeply. His expression when Anck-su-namun is killed at the end (by some of the best zombie soldiers ever) and his own soul is taken away is pretty heart-rending. And man, the way Imhotep eventually dies in a black pool surrounded by the heads of the dead…scary, creepy and sad. “Death is only the beginning.”

In fact, watch the climax of the movie, as the two Carnahan siblings try to figure out the proper incantation to win the day, even as Rick, smartly and humorously, keeps Imhotep occupied. So much better than the end of Raiders for action, comedy, creepiness, love, fear, horror, sadness and action.

The Army of The Undead (Final Fight Scene) | The Mummy (1999) | Family Flicks

Plus, it has one of my favorite moments, at the end, one that subverts the idea of the two leads falling in love. Sure they kiss at the end, but it is a tentative kind of smooch, where they are a little uncertain. Not the passionate one of lust so often used. But then they bump noses and both smile in joy. Its going to be okay. They love, not lust. More romantic than anything in Raiders. (And as the sequels show, Indy and Marion’s relationship was fraught and kinda miserable. But Rick and Evie’s never really falters. Marion takes care of their son by herself, creating a really obnoxious person. Rick and Evie raise their son together and, while he is a little too curious, is quite an amazing young man).

The Mummy (1999) - Ending

Beni’s death makes the movie, IMHO. Much worse than melting faces on people we really do not know. It is still one of the most terrifying ones for any character, much less one that we have kinda, sorta gotten to like because Rick kinda, sorta does. He was mainly just trying to protect himself but his basic greediness resulted in his horrifying death. The anticipation as the torch goes out is so much worse than the torch going out with the snakes in Raiders. Flesh-eating scarabs. What a concept.

And, finally, damn are there so many good looking major characters in the movie. Not just good-looking but are played by actors who know how to use that hotness for a purpose without being obvious. Sexy without being sexual. The chemistry between them all is what holds everything together. I would imagine that everyone cis, trans, queer on inbetween has a relationship to appreciate in the Mummy.

I understand andI loved Raiders when it came out, but Raiders is a great movie mainly, IMHO, because of two people - Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg. The scene you mention is an example. The fistfight with the huge Nazi with the plane rotating around is another. But the serial aspect of the movie, it seems to me, makes it appear like one episodic, set piece followed by another (ie how did he manage to survive on the hull of that sub?) rather than a cohesive movie. Spielberg moving chess pieces around to get the characters where he wants them. I see the hands of the genius a little too much.

YMMV. The Mummy still makes me giddy while watching (that leftover emotion is why I am still up at 4 am having these sorts of conversations. Raiders no longer does that. I appreciate it rather than love it.

And like in 2020, the GOP voters are not as likely to vote by mail-in ballot, so that will give DJT an initial lead which he will insist was undermined by ballot tampering.

It is simply the convention that write in ballots, although they come in first, are counted last because in general they were balanced between the parties and rarely affected the outcome.

That scene was classic Harrison Ford “I don’t want to be here, but I want a paycheck” acting. It’s also an example of what makes Spielberg such a great director, that his lead actor comes and says “I’m sick as a dog, why don’t I just shoot the guy?” and instead of screaming about his “vision” or getting uptight that an actor wants to change the script right in the middle of filming, he just shrugs and says “Works for me.”

[Spielberg’s] lead actor comes and says “I’m sick as a dog, why don’t I just shoot the guy?” and instead of screaming about his “vision” or getting uptight that an actor wants to change the script right in the middle of filming, he just shrugs and says “Works for me.”

and as I recall, they even referenced that scene in the follow-up film.

I read the novel not long after the film came out and I’d say of the two it’s a better story.

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom - Funny combat scene

Pointed out in comments that while the movie is making references to the earlier movie (music played, etc.) the events themselves here take place *before* those in Raiders of the Lost Ark. So maybe Jones learned from this not to misplace his pistol.

RFK Jr. Allies Trash Kennedy Clan as Corrupt, Dishonest

Top allies of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are absolutely slamming the rest of his family for disavowing his kooky anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theories and his independent presidential campaign. It’s not clear if the Camelot scion, who has downplayed the family split, approved the scathing comments to the New York Post. “RFK Jr. is a corruption fighter just like his father and uncle,” Skyhorse publishing owner Tony Lyons, a friend and aide to Kennedy, told the paper. “The family members who have stood against him when instructed to do so show their lack of integrity, backbone and honor. They have abandoned their core Kennedy values. They are part of the corruption that RFK Jr. has been fighting with all his heart for the past 40 years.” Kyle Kemper, half-brother of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, called the other Kennedys “dishonest” and said RFK Jr. is “interfering with their racket.” Many family members recently endorsed President Joe Biden over RFK Jr., who could play spoiler in the race between Biden and Donald Trump.

The flight attendant then asked the Mormon if he would like a drink. He replied in disgust, “I’d rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips.”

The Irishman handed his drink back to the attendant and said, “Me too, I didn’t know we had a choice.”

Noem book describing dog killing is a donation perk at upcoming GOP fundraiser

alternet.org

Kristi Noem’s new book, in which the South Dakota governor and Donald Trump vice presidential aspirant describes why she killed her 14-month-old dog, has sparked widespread outrage.

But to the California Republican Party, reading about how Noem shot Cricket — her family’s wirehair pointer — is a perk.

The book, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward, is included with every purchase of a ticket for a lunch banquet May 18 in Burlingame, Calif., during the California GOP Convention.

The prices: $400 for preferred seating, $300 for general admission, and $575 for a photo with Noem and a general admission ticket. Just want the photo and no grub? That’s $350.

People attending can hear Noem speak, eat lunch and go home to read about the dog she “hated.”

The California GOP did not immediately answer Raw Story’s question about whether it is reconsidering the book as a perk for the lunch.

The power that man has over the collective Republican consciousness is terrifying. The thing that bothers me is that I don’t understand how. He’s ugly, he’s a complete and total failure as a businessman, he’s a court-proven con artist, a rapist, a serial adulterer, and yet people trust him to the exclusion of all others.

If you’ve read the second volume of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, you may see a parallel. In it, the plan the scientists had created to restore a galactic civilization over a 1000 year period was destroyed because a man came along that none of their planning and theorizing had ever considered. It turned out he was a mutant who had the ability to adjust the minds of people in subtle but important ways. Trump is that mutant that the designers of our democracy could never have even fathomed. He has some way of hiding his true self to a substantial number of people. Even when presented with document evidence, they choose him and reject the evidence. It is both terrrifying and inexplicable.

Noem book describing dog killing is a donation perk at upcoming GOP fundraiser

The book, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward, is included with every purchase of a ticket for a lunch banquet May 18 in Burlingame, Calif., during the California GOP Convention.

The California GOP did not immediately answer Raw Story’s question about whether it is reconsidering the book as a perk for the lunch.

They’re already dead. They just want to jiggle the corpse around a bit to give the appearance of life.

They, like us, know that Trump will not concede if he loses in November, and instead will attempt to seize power by any means necessary, including violently. Unlike us, they are down with that.

Except this time around he doesn’t have the levers of government at his disposal. He’ll rage on truth or from behind bars and that’ll be the end of it.

I only found out a few days ago that the big stadium about a kilometre from my front door is playing three nights in early June with some pop performer, I think her name is Taylor Swift or something? anyway, I’m thinking of booking it for the weekend and going elsewhere. Anywhere. I don’t care, just… not here.

Yeah, I think that might be a really good idea. I’m trying to imagine something like that here. While there’s a stadium within a mile of my house, it’s for the high school and it probably seats 3,000 people. It’s still noisy when they all turn out for a high school football game. I couldn’t imagine tens of thousands of people gathering for three days. Best to find a hotel room in some other part of the country.

My wife is watching video from COCO5, the news station that serves central Oklahoma. They have a copter flying around. There are places where you can tell the tornado took out trailer houses only because the dirt spot is rectangular, there are concrete blocks, and the only thing left is part of a front porch/patio. You can also see how the tornado whipped around some of the trailer homes were dragged around by the random tire tracks dug in.

There were 20 estimated tornadoes in central Oklahoma, and two deaths, including a 4 month old.

I asked if the guy was aware of all the crazy shit Trump says he’ll do if he wins and the guy was like “Oh, I don’t think any of that will happen if he wins. It’s just the media playing stuff up to scare people.”

I repeated it was TRUMP himself who had said these things. On camera.

The Murrayfield stadium seats 67,000 for rugby matches. For concerts they close off the north stand to build the stage but put down flooring on the pitch for standing ticket sales so, call it 70,000 full house in that format. The stadium is located in a residential area and there is zero parking within a mile or so of the turnstiles. The route between the city centre and the stadium goes past my front door, literally. People get likkered up beforehand in the city’s bars before making their unsteady way down to the stadium mostly on foot. It’s a constant battle to keep passers-by out of our stairwell so they can’t use it as a convenient toilet as they go.

I did stewarding a couple of times for concerts there, the Rolling Stones was my last one. I don’t need the money that badly any more.

“It’s still so new. I’m not ready to share his name publicly. But it is unlike any connection I’ve ever felt. Mature, kind, thoughtful, patient. I’m glad it’s happening. But it’s like, what the heck is happening? It’s a seesaw of emotions. My belly is flipping-flopping. This was not supposed to happen.”

They met on Instagram, began talking on the phone earlier this year, and met in person for the first time in early March.

Because the “free market” MAGA types can’t buy a $25k full-size new pickup truck with physical buttons and knobs and no dealer markup. ..while corporate auto CEOs get paid out multi-$ Miilions.

They’re angry that interest rates are now within historical norms. The “free market” types got used to almost free borrowing money near 0%.. with many that didn’t even have to pay it back.

The Libertarians are mad that the “free market” means that private businesses running websites could prevent them from posting Nazi and racist content on their forums as well as content that was demonstrably false and engineered to interfere with a free election in a faltering democracy.

MAGA Libertarians that love business and the “free market” are mad as hell that corporations that stock grocery store shelves are shrinking the product quantities while raising prices all the while Kraft and Frito-Lay Executives buy new mansions with all the bonuses.

Basically tons of white Americans are mad as hell because they got lied to about a theoretical and utterly false “free market” -one that doesn’t automatically reward someone with an easy retirement who has white skin. In fact , the sight of someone like LeBron James or Beyoncé enjoying the fruits of a “free market” makes them totally livid and in favor of a specific sort of dictatorship…. One variant that was tried out starting in the 1930’s in Germany.
