BUT

We can count on the New York Times to spin the “Democrats in Disarray” crap over and over.

Of course. Part of Republican privilege is not being held to any standards at all. Everyone expects Republicans to be freaks like MTG.

Presumably, the MSFT plant announced by the Administration today is not related to the over-hyped and under-achieved Foxconn project (Racine?) which the Scott Walker government in WI spent so much time hyping (and denigrating its skeptical opponents) - and which never worked out even remotely close to the GOP’s utopian predictions?

I’m guessing that this time - it being under Joe Biden, who prefers to spend his time touting committed (and real) projects, rather than rosy “projections” - there’s actually going to be a facility there (not just a rip-off of tax breaks)….

MSFT is using the same land that Foxconn was, but the money is there from Biden;s legislative efforts. And Biden makes sure everyone there knows.

In the fizzy world of carbonated beverages, today marked a notable anniversary. On May 8, 1886, a pharmacist in Georgia named John Pemberton sold the first glass of Coca-Cola, inaugurating what is arguably the most successful product in history. According to the beverage maker, Pemberton sold nine servings per day during the soft drink’s first year; by the time The New Yorker’s E. J. Kahn wrote about it, in 1959, that number had soared to forty thousand servings every minute. European royalty drank it; so had Hitler. The Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie imported special deliveries on his imperial plane—or he did, that is, until a bottling plant opened in Addis Ababa.

It’s next week - next Friday, I think. He’s also supposed to be in Minnesota glad-handing our dumbass Republicans, so I imagine the timing is tight. I bet he intentionally scheduled those for the same day so he could get out of court and get an extra day to “campaign”.

Apropos of absolutely nothing, I looked up the Buescher Band Instrument company as I’d never heard of them before. Being that I played both the clarinet and the tenor sax all through school and college in the 70s, I’ve had some interest in the various manufacturers for some time. The company made a line of wind instruments out of their Elkhart, IN factory but were primarily known for their saxophones. They were in business from the late 19th century until 1963 when they were bought by the Selmer company. Selmer discontinued the brand in 1980. Conn-Selmer, today, owns a variety of brands and it continues to manufacture instruments in Elkhart as well as importing instruments from France and Japan. Paul Desmond and Sonny Rollins were among pro musicians who played Buescher at one point in their careers.

Ebay is currently listing a number of saxes and trumpets for sale.

Thanks for this

I’ve done many a hazard analysis for medical devices so I understand the process. I know the process is not easy and is humbling and disheartening and frightening.

So, I can guarantee they did a hazard analysis and they did note the hazard of app crashing with the mitigation of reset. But, as they now learned, you don’t stop at the first mitigation and say all good. Thankfully, app crashing can be fixed with a software update. Until the next bug that causes a crash.

A meaningless threat since recent events have shown that the wealthy can simply lawyer up and drag out lawsuits for an essentially infinite time. Even then, it would be a pocket change level fine.

And if the illegal actions help win Trump the election then all the shenanigans were worth it. Even if there are fines, etc. for violations afterwards since nothing will reverse the election.

For those who don’t know about Steve Albini, I recommend this.

Although they only existed for seven years and released just three albums, Nirvana were a band of immeasurable influence in the music world thanks in no small part to Smells Like Teen Spirit, a single track on Nevermind, their second album. It was this song that brought them out into the open, going on to sell millions of copies and win countless awards, its iconic video seemingly broadcast on MTV every 20 minutes for the next six months. 17 months after Nevermind’s release, the band began to record what would be their final album, In Utero—produced by Steve Albini, outspoken engineer extraordinaire. In November of 1992, shortly before they formally agreed on his involvement, Albini wrote to Nirvana and laid bare his philosophy in a pitch letter that is fascinating from start to finish.

Seems to me that a “don’t like” button can be a good social tool to convey disapproval without making a huge deal out of it. Sometimes that’s necessary.

The interesting thing about Power and Albini is how they both found niches working in extremely different genres by somehow finding a way to convince artists to work with them primarily on the basis of authenticity. Power’s case is even more interesting to me because he was working way the fuck outside what society would normally expect of him as a white dude born in 1952 whose education focused on classical music and jazz.

All of this history, by the way, is what AI is promising to steal from us humans who grew up and are used to living in a human fucking civilization.

1. I’m pretty sure people said the same thing about cameras.
2. Most people don’t want art. That’s why most country and pop exists.
3. There will be people who will continue making art, and people who will prefer to pay actual artists.
4. Current AI isn’t intelligent, but I expect it to actually get there one day. I wonder what its art will look like.
