No Wall Between Bush and Sharon

Uri Dan, Israel correspondent for the New York Post, gives reason to hope that President Bush is not going to sell Israel down the Jordan River: No Wall Between Bush and Sharon.

The more questions Bush asked, the more difficult Sharon found it to enjoy the dishes served that were, of course, kosher: grilled yellowtail snapper and peppered tenderloin of beef, washed down with Hagefen Chardonnay 2000.

“Who is Israel’s friend in the world apart from the US?” the president wanted to know. Sharon explained that he has discovered friendliness to Israel on the part of Russia’s Putin, Italy’s Berlusconi, and Britain’s Blair; and he noted that Israel is making every effort to deepen friendships in South America and Africa. But, he said, the US is Israel’s real great and most important friend in the world.

Here Bush paused, reflected deeply, and an expression of sadness passed over his face, as one of the participants described it. He talked of his visit to Auschwitz, which left a deep impression on his heart, seeing as he did from close up the remains of the Nazi destruction machine. The visit, the president emphasized to Sharon, strengthened his determination to fight against the “Axis of Evil,” against anyone who develops weapons of mass destruction and aims to wage a global campaign against terror.

Abu Mazen, who avoided visiting the Holocaust Museum in Washington, has apparently not yet realized who President Bush is, or that the rules of the game have changed.
