The term "fiscal cliff" is commonly associated with around $500bn (£316bn) in expiring US tax cuts and spending cuts that could kick in automatically next year, triggering a "significant recession", according to the Congressional Budget Office.

It's a political ploy by the opposition to force the PM to call an election.

Doesn't Japan hold more of our (the US's) debt than any country other than America and China? If, theoretically, Japan did drive off of this "fiscal cliff" what would that mean in regards to all those denbs?

I'm glad the US has a Congress and not a parliament. Otherwise we'd have nothing but elections.

Nothing. Only if the Japanese people and institutions holding the debt ceased to exist would anything change. The Japanese government isn't a primary holder of US debt in Japan,; The primary holders are private financial institutions.

Japan's political system is moribund and defunct.

Even with the country's future in the balance, the LDP considers it more important to play politics that to do anything to address the mountain of debt which they are more responsible for than any other party.
