China Airshow: Drone and Fighter Jet Unveiled
China reveals its latest military hardware, including a drone similar in appearance to those used by Britain and the US.

China’s unmanned Yi Long drone on display at the airshow in Zhuhai

China has taken the wraps off its latest military drone and fighter plane as the country builds up its defence capabilities.

The unmanned Yi Long drone can carry two missiles and although it looks similar to the MQ-9 Reaper used by the British and US military it is likely to be priced far more cheaply.

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post newspaper put the cost of the Chinese drone at around $1m (£630,000).

China's first stealth fighter, the J-20, was unveiled in early 2011 but is not expected to enter service until 2018.

I see a Stuxnet scenario in the not too distant future.

Because of a drone that looks like a Reaper externally? That same drone is also available to other foreign buyers. This is nothing new. A Stuxnet attack on China would have serious consequences. Thankfully, Obama would never approve of such a thing.

Of course. We might use that information differently and we instead would call it "intelligence gathering." It's the nature of the game.

I'd have to say you are right on this.

The threat we face from China is very different than the threat Israel faces coming from Iran.

Fact be told, the Soviets copied lot of our stuff.

Obviously I am pissed at the Chinese for this. And I'll not bore you with my long list of professional grievances. But hey hardball is a tough game. On one level, that's a sharp motivated opponent.

But what really sticks in my craw is the sheer dearth of consequences for copying at will. Aircraft, weapons, jeans, shirts, jewelry, movies. Penalty? What penalty?

The problem: How do you punish China without starting a trade war? They'll just deny everything and scream about you irrational we're being. And a trade war would cause a price spike on all kinds of consumer products here in the US. That would do no favors for the political class here, as they'd likely feel the brunt of public anger.

This is why we can't cut defense development spending. If we quit spending hundreds of billions to develop new weapons systems the Chinese wont have anyone to steal new stuff from!
