From that well known progressive, Edmund Burke.

Certainly, gentlemen, it ought to be the happiness and glory of a representative to live in the strictest union, the closest correspondence, and the most unreserved communication with his constituents. Their wishes ought to have great weight with him; their opinion, high respect; their business, unremitted attention. It is his duty to sacrifice his repose, his pleasures, his satisfactions, to theirs; and above all, ever, and in all cases, to prefer their interest to his own. But his unbiassed opinion, his mature judgment, his enlightened conscience, he ought not to sacrifice to you, to any man, or to any set of men living. These he does not derive from your pleasure; no, nor from the law and the constitution. They are a trust from Providence, for the abuse of which he is deeply answerable. Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays, instead of serving you, if he sacrifices it to your opinion.

From the Speech to the Electors of Bristol.

“That’s what a Republic is all about. Some like slaves, some don’t. States Rights! Individual choice! Freedom! Liberty! It’s what MY constituents WANT! ” Asked further about liberty and this thing called freedom and how it is definitely not something the slaves would have, he screamed “STOP PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH!!!!”
Your GOP furiously rebranding every day, every hour, every minute of every waking second. I suggest he shit in that hat and pull it down over his ears.

“That’s what a republic is about. You elected a person for your district to do your wants and wishes, not the wants and wishes of a special interest, not his own wants and wishes, yours.”

Wheeler said today that he believes “liberal” operatives are trying to frame him as a bigot by spreading video of the statement on the Internet.

Uh-huh. So if he woke up tomorrow to find his district suddenly transformed into one of that wanted all hard-right Tea Party members immediately interned in special FEMA camps, he’d totally vote for that too. right?

Dude really needs to read Profiles in Courage. The entire point of having a representative democracy is to allow the individual representative’s sense of principal, honor or integrity to, for the good of the country and at great personal cost, drive them to take actions that override current popular sentiment.

Looking at his picture again I’m not convinced this guy understands that his constituents elected him, and not his hat, to represent them.

So nice to know a big, tough, cowboy hat wearing guy will gladly represent a mob mentality, that defies the provisions of the very Constitution his party claims to love. You know, if it’s popular enough.

Odd slavery would be so conveniently located at the tip of his tongue, and foremost on his brain, for an example. Then again, one needs look no further than his own party for context.

What a complete piece of dogshit. I also see he’s a reiner and “rancher.” Well, it all fits now.

Also, if anyone cares to look, there’s a whiny bitch piece on his website about how this was taken out of context. Yes, that being pro slavery would need to have context.

Fuck this guy sideways. And fuck every single Republican in the room that endured this without putting this asshole in his place.

In his first term in the Assembly, Wheeler serves one of the most conservative areas in the state. Douglas County has not elected a Democrat in several decades. He was named the worst member of the Assembly in a Review-Journal poll of legislators, reporters and lobbyists at the end of the 2013 session.

Nevada’s top Republican leaders moved Monday to condemn Wheeler’s comment.

“Assemblyman Wheeler’s comments were insensitive and wrong,” Republican U.S. Sen. Dean Heller said in a written statement. “As an elected representative, it is Assemblyman Wheeler’s responsibility to protect Nevadans’ civil liberties at all times. Such statements have no place in public discourse.”

Republican Go. Brian Sandoval also released a statement saying the comments “are deeply offensive, and have no place in our society. He should retract his remarks and apologize.”

Ah, yes, the Republican damage control machine in action. Always after the fact. Not one ever has the balls to say anything during the event. Not a one.

Damn these media people reporting “facts.” Damn them all to hell. //

So if the Congress passes a law, the President signs it and the Supreme Court upholds it, does he then have to obey it? Not if it conflicts with his sense of what is just and constitutional!!!

Next up: Incest, cannibalism, and human sacrifice. Where does your representative stand on these vital issues? Divine right of kings? Witch burning? How about reviving Sati (“suttee”) and extending it to the non-Hindu population?

Yeah Jim, it’s “liberal operatives.” not your own stupid words. Moron.

Insensitive?

Poor guy just got confused about what day it was. I’m sure he thought he was supposed to be addressing a Klan rally that day.

Hey, if his constituents want it, he’ll try and deliver it. That’s his job.

This guy doesn’t understand the basic concept of “Freedom.”

I like to tell this kind of Republican that they don’t deserve America. They don’t deserve a democracy, or civil rights.

We will grudgingly sigh and allow that they are permitted these things, but it’s like watching Pat fucking Robertson use a GPS. You just want to BEAT THE FUCK OUT OF THAT STUPID FACE because he clearly doesn’t get that he’s taking with one hand what he denies with the other.

He has to be a tea partier because I can imagine that he’d talk about how much he loves the Constitution in one breath and in the next breath, he vows he’d vote for slavery if his constituents wanted him. If his love for the Constitution were real, he’d know that slavery was abolished by the 13th Amendment. IMHO, he’s just another self-serving bastard who is willing to do anything to promote his political career, and he’s too stupid to know that what might play well in his district doesn’t play well in other places. Instead of educating his constituents, he’s making them dumber and giving them the idea that they have more power than they actually have.
