The future is looking more like “The Handmaid’s Tale” than “Gattaca”

Oh come on.

a. The man is a derp, but there are only so many different ways to describe a plot of a movie and

b. wikipedia is public domain…how do you plagiarize something that is “free”?

I will not give the derp the benefit of the doubt, because there is no actual substance to the accusation itself.

All he would have to do is say “Let me quote from an authoritative reference…” and he’d have been covered.

It’s a poor job by his speechwriters, but it’s also par for the course for the Senator.

Plagiarism is the use of any material not written by yourself and with no attribution to the original source or author. It makes no difference if it is in the public domain. You are confusing copyright violation with stealing someone else’s words or ideas.

This definition should be understood by anyone who had to write a paper for a college course. That would include Sen. Paul, or his speechwriters, or presumably you.

I teach English. The similarities between the unattributed Wikipedia article and Paul’s speech would be sufficent cause for me to give Sen. Paul a zero for his speech, on the basis that he plagiarized part of it.

re: #5 wheat-dogghazi

Yeah, but most of us here would give him a zero for the content (or lack of it) anyway.

This was a speech and it’s hard to put in footnotes-‘as Wikipedia says’ is kind an awkward insertion. It’s a distraction from the actual derp involved.

No, see, it’s not plagiarized because Rand Paul was the one who originally wrote the Wikipedia article!

re: #3 alinuxguru

How about this:

In the future, and a not too distant future at that, social standing and what jobs you can and cannot hold are based on your DNA. Your genetic code is scanned frequently ensuring that no one “skirts the system”. Vincent, played by Ethan Hawke, wants to be an astronaut, but his DNA isn’t the right kind. The only way he can achieve his dream is to become a “Borrowed Ladder”; using someone else’s DNA because his is just not good enough.

I wrote that in less time than it would take to make a cup of tea.

Writing for Paul’s staffers appears to be as difficult as governing is for the senator himself.

And if there is anyone who knows how to skirt the system, it is the self-certified Doctor himself.

Stealing someone else’s writing is plagiarism, regardless of whether it was free or not. You still have to attribute where you got your words.

All this does is reinforce my perception of the Pauls as lazy freeloaders and men vastly insufficient to the task they’ve taken upon themselves. They want to pretend they are these great big thinkers, but the sad fact is they’re not very smart and not really any good at anything, so they have to fake it.

Rand Paul is the eye doctor in Bowling Green who created his own board to certify him. Good thing I never needed an eye doc when I lived there, since it looks like you have to travel far and wide to find a real one.

Don’t teachers have some kind of internet tools/software that will help them track down student papers that are based on ripping off internet info/text?

Anyway…if I was a teacher and I saw this connection I’d have to call young Randy to the office after school and tell him in front of the school principal he is getting an F in the class and if he hoped to become a politician some day, he better learn how to form his own thoughts to put on paper. And I’d tell him he better realize he is developing the morals of a sewer rat.

Yeah, most universities have integrated “SafeAssign” software into their Blackboard interface. It checks web sites and also checks against all the papers that have ever been uploaded from any university that uses it.

Makes me wonder now what would happen if someone started running transcripts of political speeches through SafeAssign…. lol!!
