CuriousLurker,

Thanks for posting this. Although I’m pretty certain the list is not complete, but this will still be very useful.

Favorited for reference. Thanks for posting it!

I found out today that there is another SPLC. Loks like another good one.

The Student Press Law Center is an advocate for student First Amendment rights, for freedom of online speech, and for open government on campus. The SPLC helps students and teachers whose futures are in jeopardy because they refuse to back down in the face of unlawful censorship.

You’re welcome and you’re right, it’s not complete. It’s just a starting point I chose because it lists many of the groups we stumble upon when reading about politics & politicians.

You’re welcome and thank you for the other SPLC!

They seem to have skipped the Threepers, though I know they are aware of some of them. They, like the sovereign citizens, are not overtly focused on ‘groups’, but on government and liberal ideology. Some to see (from a distance): III Patriots/III Percent, Sipsey Street, Western Rifle Shooting Association. These groups are undergoing a good bit of internal stress and the violent rhetoric is going critical at the moment. They overlap with the Oathkeepers, who are listed.

Thanks! I’d never heard of any of those.

I watch them through Google cache, thinking not to give them hits. The IIIpercent.com faction is over the line, engaged in a blogwar with the much older (Bill Clinton era) Sipsey Street threepers. The Kerodin faction is part scam, running the ‘Citadel’ compound effort in what is called The American Redoubt (mostly Idaho). Kerodin sells nooses branded with ‘III’ as a party favor. At the moment, these clowns are more likely to do violence on each other than anyone else.

speaking of groups with similar abbreviations. “The American Defense League” which is listed here under anti Muslim groups, also has the same initials as the Anti Defamation League, which is a radically different organization. When I told anti Muslim bigot once that his beliefs were nonsense he started sending me stuff from the American Defense League in an attempt to change my mind. Since I told him that I supported the ADL, he thought I meant that anti Muslim group, rather than the Anti Defamation League. He didn’t do much research. It was after I saw the “counter jihad” for what it really was, and it was a group I didn’t support, and I think I hadn’t even heard of it until he mentioned it, almost needless to say, thankfully it didn’t work.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also has a stalker org, the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), out of Regent’s University.

Awesome post, CL. Very creative use of lists. Must have taken a lot of work!

Thanks (and thanks for the Page promotion last night). Yeah, it took forever, especially since the divs I was using to float the lists side by side were causing other things to go all wonky.

I need to figure out how Wikipedia does it in a single div without floats, or so it seems (I only peeked at their code briefly). They’re just bulleted lists though.

Nice! I hadn’t seen that one.

Much easier to do multi-column bulleted lists than auto-incremented numbered lists, with pure CSS.

I’ve heard of them. The American Center For Law And Justice is another organization we should oppose. At least they don’t have the same abbreviation as the American Civil Liberties Union.

This list is a keeper for sure. Excellent work, and nifty CSS is the cherry on top.

True. The SPLC reports regularly on Sov. Cit. groups, but unless they cross the line into religious or ethnic bigotry it does not call them ‘hate groups’. Its a matter of keeping definitions sufficiently ‘tight’ and taking care to not classify opposition to a strong federal government as ‘hate’. They still give it to the sovereign citizens groups with the bark on, but the care taken in classification makes the criticism more effective by making sure it is honest.
