Good article.

Yglesias provides 7 solid reasons why Pence is the kind of guy Republicans could live with as nominee. What he doesn’t provide is any reason why Republicans would be excited by this guy. Even Republicans want a candidate with personality who can excite the party. Pence is kind of boring. So his most likely path to the nod would probably be as a default choice if other bigger name candidates flame out.

Run from him he’s as crazy as the rest he just hides it better,

He would assuredly be Mitt Romney all over again. If you look at the field as it now stands there is a path for him.
- Firebrands like Cruz, who I can’t see making it
- Governors that either are struggling to get re-elected in their state (Walker) or are scandal plagued (Christie)
- Retread Jeb Bush who holds deal breaker positions on immigration and Common Core
- Retread Rick Santorum
- Ultimate retread Mitt Romney
I don’t know that Pence will get it but right now he’s got as good a chance as any and better than some.
Whoever it is, I won’t be voting for him.

In other words, he holds to the Republican platform.

It’s almost inevitable that Democrats will win the presidency from here on out as far as the eye can see. But it’s not utterly inevitable. Prudent wishing is to wish that the Republican nominee not be some Ted Cruz. True, a Pence would be less unlikely to win than a Cruz, but a Cruz would be the greater risk if he were to win.
