Your post has a good discussion point, I think California should have separate primaries and only members of the said parties should be allowed to vote in same.

Your heading, however, bears little relationship to the discussion part of your post.

re: #1 fern01

It does, I hesitated to change the story original headline because without the commanding lead, the point has less merit. Maybe a bad call on my part.

Good point - but I still found it a strange heading, as a massive lead for the dem is expected - your post, however - and I read it anyway :)

As a Californian, I think I prefer the current system to the old one. Yes, some people voted strategically, but that is more likely to result in better general election candidates than in worse. In a closed GOP primary, the Trumper Allen would likely have won the nomination and got beat at least 3:2. Cox was the least terrible of the Republicans, and if/when the CAGOP becomes less crazy, this system gives at least a chance for decent general election nominees.

It’s also worth pointing out that Feinstein’s general election opponent is a Democrat. And, in the Lt Gov race, two Democrats are facing off in the general election.

The last point to consider is that per the Secretary of State’s voter registration stats, there’s more independent voters than there are Republicans in California. It makes little sense to me, at least, to freeze out a quarter of the electorate because we choose not to identify with a political party. Especially given the state’s history with not really liking political parties (during the progressive era, candidates were able to register with more than one party, and that was the law until the 60s or so).

Ranked-Choice Voting Has Challenged the Status Quo. Its Popularity Will Be Tested in November. JUNEAU — Alaska’s new election system — with open primaries and ranked voting — has been a model for those in other states who are frustrated by political polarization and a sense that voters lack real choice at the ...
