It’s not progress at all. It’s nothing more than evidence that irrational religious beliefs (worship of guns) is reinforced by irrational and bigoted fears. Suggesting that this shows people are somehow less racist is ridiculous. Their racial fears are assuaged by clinging to their magic freedom talisman, because then they’re always ready to shoot the armed black person. It’s a quintessential American trait: fantasising about gunfights in the street.

More like people deciding to do for themselves what government is perceived to be failing at doing.

I remain opposed to open carry, but I do think its worth noting that Texas pushed it through even after black groups made it clear they would be open-carrying. The paranoia that drives open carry is about government and its failings (real and perceived) and not about race.
