I would agree. I think that’s why we’re seeing the Breitbart/Hot Air/GOProud types, e.g. the younger sorts who are sick of the social cons, but like the money interests of the Republicans. Marrying the GOP to the rabid social cons was a really bad idea.
No chance. The religious right threatened to pull their support and run their own candidate over McCain’s nomination, he was forced to accept their choic e of VP candidate as quid pro quo for their support.
Had he chosen, say, Liebermann, he would have totally alienated the far right and we would have seen a third-party proto-Tea-Party candidate.
