One of the side effects of doing genealogy is that one gets to study history. Well, genealogy is family history, but I mean in the larger sense.

For example, until I got into my family tree I was very ignorant of American history of the period from the middle 18th century to about 1830, ignoring the actual Revolutionary War.

Now, though, I feel I’ve learned quite a bit.
