We just watched Oppenheimer. Yes, I was angry at Strauss and the board as it should be, but you know what also got me angry because I have experienced it before: The people around him not understanding how he could hold a more complex picture of the world in his head than they wanted. Specifically, in one case, how he could see the need for labor to organize and yet not be a communist. It was a running theme through the movie.

His wife, his girlfriend and his brother were all card-carrying members of the Communist party. Robert wasn’t a joiner, but he led a communist-themed book club. (Einstein was also a communist, his ex-wife and mother of his children was a communist organizer in Serbia…)
