I used to live in a heavily Polish area of the country, southeast of Chicago. They would usually either abbreviate or otherwise alter their last names for the sake of convenience when talking with people of non-Polish descent.

It’s pronounced “Zbignev” with “soft” n (“Zbignyev”?). The diminutive is Zbyszek (Zbyshek).

Interesting.

The guy I know has a Cajun last name. I seriously don’t know how he and his family got “beejack” out of “Zbigniew”. Probably for reasons explained by dopefish above.
