My dad commented about two days after Uvalde that some of his coworkers (read: old, white, Southern men) were “saying” that the Second Coming must be around the corner because it’s “never been this bad.” When I reminded him that he’s old enough (63) to have lived through the 70s and 80s when crime rates were outrageously higher compared to now, he bellowed that it was “never this bad” back then, which made me roll my eyes and point out that the statistics said otherwise.
