Perception makes up a large part of ones political image. The perception of the GOP has been defined in large part by the likes of Limbaugh, Beck, and other bombastic media figures along with the extremist rhetoric heard at town halls and Tea Parties across America. Like it or not, the worst impression that is put forward is the most lasting impression in the political world.

As an outsider (from South Africa) I’m not sure what the GOP stands to gain by alienating moderates and independents. I have lived in de facto one party states for many years. A strong, healthy opposition is essential for democracy.
