You have to be careful petting the chest and front neck of a cat. They may tolerate it for a while, and then suddenly try to bite you.

One of my cats loves to be petted, brushed, and skritched all over, and just when he’s at his happiest, he bites. A love bite, but those teeth are sharp. I bop him for it, and he’s doing it less, switching to a little slobbering instead.
