‘Men are stuck’ in gender roles, data suggest

C.J. Duron, 6, has gravitated toward Barbies, Disney princesses and pink since he was a toddler. In a blog and book, his mother, Lori Duron, chronicles the worries the family faces concerning gender stereotypes. (Liz O. Baylen, Los Angeles Times / December 7, 2013)

I have to disagree to a point with the article, though I’m sure it’s more anecdotal on my part than actual science, and that’s the acceptance of masculinity in women. It’s something that we as a society have accepted more and more in recent decades, but is still really only seen as acceptable early on in life. In much of my experience, the idea is still that by a time a girl begins the transition into an adult, she’s to have shed all that and begun “accepting” herself as a woman. That women who are still very masculine are acceptable in certain occupational fields, while most of the rest still draw the conclusion that a masculine acting woman is either a lesbian or trying to act like a man to attain acceptance in male-dominated occupations.
