It’s both but more the 2nd motive: They tend to believe what they’re saying, but the belief is secondary to the desire to shock people, upset existing structures, and show their newly gained power.

It’s mostly males that do this because males are more inclined to risk taking, generally speaking, and frankly because they are more expendable.

And generally speaking, less mature and/or more prone to remain mental and emotional adolescents well into their 20s or even 30s. Certainly, these three are prime examples.
