I was just looking at that. It’s not a secret that each white house wants to get its message out and there are strategies to manipulate media coverage. Remember the infamous Bush era “talking points memos”? Of course if a reporter annoys them enough their access might be limited but saying it openly is a little over the line. Even with the Woodward situation which was a bit overblown it’s clear that they were trying to manipulate him into giving favorable coverage, there’s nothing wrong with that, in fact I think it’s somewhat expected. However, yelling at him isn’t wise and the followup apology email was another attempt to manipulate him with self doubt. Kind of a douchey thing to do.Of course Woodward’s response was polite because the hot head he was talking to could be a potentially good source of inside info, especially if he’s prone to losing his temper. It’s just good journalism.
