I think it’s probably honestly been this bad we’re seeing more of it due to more people having access to mobile devices that can record these sort of things. It does feel like it’s gotten worse though but as I said that could be because we’re seeing more of it than we ever have before.

I think that’s one element to the rise in these videos, but I think another has been the slow erosion of public trust in the police. Between the major shootings of the 90s and the post-9/11 jitters, we gave the cops a lot of latitude when it came to enforcing the law. But as both have worn off, and crime rates have continued to fall, it’s become virtually impossible to justify incidents like this. You can only see so many incidents when a cop attacks an unarmed suspect or shoots a guy who had nothing more dangerous than a cellphone in his hands before you realize that there’s something very seriously wrong with the way law enforcement operates in this country.
