1) The Beatles went to India and made it a Place to Go. (Unlike legions of their followers, they took what they found there seriously — or at least Harrison did.)

2) The boomers grew up in unprecedented material comfort (and they could find work easily too). They never had to worry about being without food, clothing and shelter, even if they “turned their back on materialism,” so they learned the wrong lesson — sure, money won’t buy happiness, but you can’t ignore “things” if you don’t have that minimum.

The Beatles did it because they could and the interest was a result of their earlier experimentation with drugs and “expanding” their consciousness.

No one has to leave their own country to discover their goodness or the “meaning of life”. Introspection can be performed anywhere. The trick is, you really have to work at developing understanding—it’s not something that can simply be absorbed by adopting another’s philosophy.
