I’m afraid that the diversion in the meaning of “sex” and “gender” is causing a lot of unnecessary confusion.
The problem is, traditionally, the word “sex” was used that way. Indeed, that’s why there is a portion of the Y that is called the ” sex-determining region “: en.wikipedia.org
I realize that there is a contemporary effort to re-define the words “gender” and “sex” to try and remove a sense of genetic determinism. But languages have their own momentum and it’s not usually easy to try and reshape the lexicon.
No, I don’t think that’s a diversion of the meaning. Chromosomes do not determine sex, or there’d by no XY women with Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome.
