They definitely made it all the way west with black folk by LBJs term. My fam’s been eating them in CA and AZ for generations. But maybe Lyndon’s people didn’t get down like that. That’s a loss for sure.
Stores here in DFW carry them. I developed a taste for grits while I was stationed in Alabama during my Army service. They were a staple of the diet there, at least for older folks. Younger locals seemed to subsist mostly on RC Cola and Moon Pies. Salted peanuts were occasionally added to the RC but purists preferred Pepsi for that particular delicacy.
