As far as I can tell, the eventual defeat of US interests in Vietnam was ensured the moment the US decided that Ho Chi Minh was an enemy simply because he was a communist with ties to the Soviet Union.

Actually it was ensured when Truman went back on FDR’s plans to refuse to allow the French back in after WWII. It’s hard to say how a free Vietnam might have developed - perhaps communist, perhaps not, perhaps a mess as big as post war Italy. Still we’d have all been better off if we hadn’t forsaken FDR’s anti-colonial plans.
