Jesse Lee Peterson is often characterised as low in intelligence due to his speech patterns. That is not the case. He was born with a cleft palette which was not corrected by surgery until age six. As such, his speech development was affected and he has not been able to overcome that difficulty.

there is no logical reason why someone born with a cleft palette cannot also be an idiot. Maybe God thought, “This kid is gonna be an idiot. Better give him a cleft palette so he has a ready excuse for that.”
